You open your eyes and find yourself lying in an orchard. Peach trees are in full blossom above you, while a cloud of butterflies flit from branch to branch. Chickens cluck somewhere nearby...you may be on a farm. There's a piece of paper lying near your head. This should explain a lot...you hope. |

eat the paper. ...are you sure that's a good plan? no, wait, look at the paper. hmm, it seems to be a perfectly ordinary piece of looseleaf binder paper that any American (at least, I don't know about other countries) student would probably write on...three holes on the left side, blue lines, etc. Of course, presuming you meant read the paper...*evil grin*, this is what it says: "Dear Friend, You should be able to make it through this place alive, I hope. You will find up to four doors in each room. You may have to find a different way out, and you may have to backtrack, but eventually, you will find the treasure. Captain Jack Sparrow." I doubt it's really Jack Sparrow who wrote the note, but this is all you have to go on. That, and the 1985 American quarter Scotch-taped (sellotaped?) to the corner of the paper. Good luck. |

if i'm in an orchard (presumably outside?), why would i be concerned with going into any rooms? Well, that's the funny thing. It seemed you were outside, but now that you think to look around more closely, you're not. You're inside what seems to be a clear glass or plastic building, like a greenhouse. can i see a door? is my motivation to get the treasure? You look around a bit. There's four doors; we'll call them North, West, East and South because there's one on each side of the rectangular building. Your motivation must be to get the treasure, since Captain Jack Sparrow said so. In other words, yes. is there a specific reason to think i might be in danger? Well, other than Captain Jack's say so, you can't think of anything. But then, you're not sure who or where or when you are, so that's not a surprise. Still, if the good Captain believes you may be in danger, you may well be. It's best to be careful. Nothing here looks dangerous so far, though. |

well, lets get out of here, and find the treasure, which ever comes first. are there any markings on the doors? if so, what is on each one? yell 'hello! can anyone hear me!?' - any reply? make sure i checked both sides of the paper. remove quarter, anything written on the paper underneath it? quarter look normal (one side heads, one side tails, bite it to make sure it's solid, etc)? |

well, lets get out of here, and find the treasure, which ever comes first. You try each of the doors. They're all locked. I don't think we can get out before we find something, at least. are there any markings on the doors? if so, what is on each one? North: 2, West: 7, East: 3, South: 7 yell 'hello! can anyone hear me!?' - any reply? You hear clucking near the North door. You remember seeing a thick clump of holly trees that way...something might be hiding there. make sure i checked both sides of the paper. You did. remove quarter, anything written on the paper underneath it? You do so. A "0" is there, or perhaps it's an O. You think 0, though. quarter look normal (one side heads, one side tails, bite it to make sure it's solid, etc)? Yes indeed. That hurt, by the way. You hope you haven't cracked a tooth. |

go look in the clump of holly trees. Quietly though, don't scare whatever is in there. You find a clearing, with a chicken house and a pen. Several blue-plumaged hens are pecking around on the ground. One of them seems to have found something silvery and shiny. Look around, is there anything notable on the ground? A silvery, shiny object...it seems to be a coin. You'd have to get closer to see what kind. Luckily the fence is low enough to climb over. The hens don't seem to have noticed you yet. There's also a small bag of grain hanging on the fence. |

Take the grain and the coin. If the hens come for you, use the grain to distract them. Back to those peach trees at the beginning - are the peaches able to actually be picked? If so, take one. |

Take the grain and the coin. If the hens come for you, use the grain to distract them. You take the grain. The hens immediately come running, so you throw handfuls of the grain and they run for it, leaving the coin behind. It's another quarter. Taped to it on the reverse side is the number 1 on a paper square. It's blue lined, so probably binder paper again. As you examine the quarter, you hear a "click" as though a door has unlocked. Back to those peach trees at the beginning - are the peaches able to actually be picked? If so, take one. You go back and look at them, but the peach trees are still in blossom, no fruit. |

Ooh, yay! :-) Check the N/E/S/W doors, and if one is unlocked, head through it. The North door is the only one opened. You head through, and just after you do it slams shut and locks. You're in a...well, this building seems to be a meeting hall of sorts. It's also considerably larger than the greenhouse was, with three doors along the south wall (where you just came in), three along the north, and one each on the west and east ends. Unsurprisingly, all of them are locked. The walls are painted with forest scenes; deer and grouse among the hemlock trees while fireflies fly overhead in the night sky. A Great Dane sleeps in front of the eastern door. There's a fish tank near you with a few brook trout swimming around. Whoever built this place doesn't care much for tropical specimens, you'd guess. About fifty straight-backed wooden chairs face the lectern and podium in front of the eastern door, which the dog is guarding. |

Remembering that you now have two quarters, check the year on one labeled 1 please. Hmm, the second coin is indeed a quarter. Well spotted. The year on the front is obscured by a dark stain, and the "1" is very firmly taped on. It's probably not a good plan to take it off. Also take a closer look at the fish tank. You take a closer look. It's a freshwater fish tank like you might see in an aquarium or possibly in a seafood restaurant/market (I think they've got something like it in "The Fish Market" near home, Tortie. Haven't been in recently to check, though, and probably different fish.) The brook trout seem happy enough to swim in it. There's nothing odd inside the tank; all seems normal. |

Do any of the chairs stand out? Not particularly. Anything on the chairs? Yes, oddly enough...you check each one, and on the second one from the left in front, you find a blue plastic Slinky. Under the chairs? Anything on the lectern? Podium? On the lectern is a KJV Bible. It's closed, and there's nothing else there. |

Try reciting the verses to the dog. Although I really doubt the dog, being asleep, will be interested at the moment. As soon as you get near the dog, he stands up and growls at you. Perhaps he was just feigning sleep?? In any case, barely noting the glint of silver between his teeth, you back away hastily... Check out the painted walls. Does anything stand out among them? ...and go to examine the walls. They're very nicely painted...you'd guess the painter to date from the eighteenth century or so, or to be a copyist of scenic art from that time period. The art could be from then, certainly. |

Great. More dogs. :-( Unfortunately, you'll have to deal with him...fortunately, you have the means. See if you can get a closer look at the fireflies - maybe by stacking the chairs or something. This isn't doing anything but killing time, but you try and move the chairs. They don't shift. You stand on a chair and can see them better; they're not much more than dots of paint in the painting, elaborately done though they are. Interesting, but certainly not worth exploring. |

I don't know...try distracting the dog with the Slinky. You throw the Slinky at the dog. You grab the coin...another quarter, this time marked 2...and dry it off before putting it in your pocket with the other quarters. If not that...inventory recap, please? It worked, and you hear a door "click" open. INVENTORY RECAP: 1985 quarter Letter from "Captain Jack Sparrow" (questionable veracity) Slinky currently on the floor, if you want to get it...the dog abandoned it Two quarters marked with paper squares, one each reading "1" and "2". |

So you take the Slinky. The door that was behind the dog, which by the way is marked "3", is the one that opened. Before you go through it, you take note of the doors' layout in case it's needed: North (left to right as you face them) : Red door, 11, 11. West: 17. South: (left to right as you face them) : 35, 7, 1. East: 3. You open this door. |

Go through the door, and do not close it behind you (don't want to get locked in again). What do you see? You go through the door, which closes and locks automatically. It seems you don't have a choice in the matter. You're outside, now; at least this place is open to the air. There's a stream winding past the garden you've stepped out in; more of the brook trout from the tank seem to be enjoying their freedom here. A bed of Viola sororia carpets the ground, while red oak trees shade the brook. As you turn slowly around, you find that the garden is walled on two sides; North and West. The "3" door you just exited is on the West wall. Further down the wall is a "1" door. On the North wall are two doors marked "11". The brook flows down south and east, and the garden abruptly ends to be replaced by a sandy shore, where the stream flows into the ocean, a small boat tethered to a pole there. There's a gate on the beach side of the garden. It's locked, of course. |

I'm sure you could if you could get to it. Unfortunately (and I only realized I forgot to elaborate after I posted it; mea maxima culpa) there's a fence and a gate blocking you from the shore. It's not possible to climb over, either...it looks like it's been electrically wired, I wouldn't want to try it. |

It's difficult to tell where it ends, but I'll just save you the worry and tell you it's impossible to get around it. No control panel is in evidence. How is the gate locked? With a sort of keypad device...a screen, QWERTY keyboard, etc. The screen wants you to enter some sort of password. |

Upon reflection, you decide dividing Balin into quarters would not be a good plan. You go fishing for brook trout and catch one. It doesn't help you particularly, but at least now, presuming you know how to kill, clean and cook trout, you won't go hungry in this place. |

"Balin's quarters"? I dunno... Try "84", as well. And "Balin's 84 quarters" works. The gate opens as a quarter flies out of a slot in the lock into your hand. |

What does this quarter say? 3, written on the usual paper square. And head through the gate - try not to let it close behind you. Resistance is futile, young Balin. The gate slams shut behind you and locks. And please don't tell me we're going to have to find 84 quarters...Don't go giving me ideas...No. |

Go over to the boat. Can you go sailing? It is a sailboat, so yes. (I thought about it being a rowboat, but on the ocean, that's probably a bad plan...) As soon as you are in the boat, you notice a cask of fresh water, a bag of trailmix, and another bag of Clementines stored on the boat. (The contents of the boat, unlike everything else so far, are not clues. Just food.) |

So we're on the ocean? We are, indeed. Is the wind strong enough to sail? If so, let's go sailing. We release the boat, and begin sailing in a southerly direction, keeping close to the coastline. In a much shorter time than it ought to (but this is a lateral puzzle), you are driven aground on a shoreline where sand and pebbles quickly give way to green grass and peach trees, heavy with ripe fruit. |

Take your stuff with you, and drag the boat on shore so it doesn't drift away. You do that, placing the fish, trail mix, Clementines, and small cask of water in the basket. Miraculously, the boat stays where you put it. Hmm. You might need it again... Try picking one of the peaches. You do. It comes off easily, and it seems ripe, juicy and nice. Why not take a few more for your basket? |

Bees and butterflies add some color to the scenery. Beyond the line of peach trees, you see a lake. |

Well then, go ahead and go fishing *grin* and see if you can catch a fish (with a quarter inside perhaps?) Thank you ever so, Tortiesibling. After a while fishing, you manage to land a bass. While in the process of cleaning it (and the trout, why not) and preparing the two fish for cooking, you find a quarter marked "4" inside the bass. Well, that worked. You put the quarter away. |

Cook the fish. If you feel they may be of use later, put them in your basket; otherwise, eat them. You cook the fish, and eat the trout, putting the bass away for later. (You're a bit wary of eating a fish that ate a quarter, for some reason.) Is there any way we can walk around the lake? If so, do so. You take a leisurely stroll around the lake. Nothing but more peach trees, and a tall fence preventing you from going much further. It looks like the only way to go is back to the boat. |

All right, let's go sailing again. Don't forget your stuff. Brilliant idea, Balin. :-) You pack up all your stuff, go back to the boat, and head north again. When you come ashore this time, you find a beachside cabin between you and the treeline...mostly white oaks. There's quite the catch of oysters in a tub by the door, though you can't seem to find anyone who'd have caught them, and tools for opening them. |

Open up the oysters - see if you find a pearl. Or two, or three. Or, knowing our luck, a quarter. You do that. They don't seem the type for pearl oysters, but, not surprisingly, you find quarter number 5 in your fifth oyster. The five oysters go in the basket (no point opening them if you weren't going to keep them) Then check out the cabin. Well, it's pretty empty...there's a nutmeg grinder, a pile of unground nutmeg and a bowl half full of the ground spice on the table, and an empty bed in one corner, stripped of covers, but otherwise. There's a door labeled "6" on the north side of the cabin. It's slightly ajar. Doors marked "11" and "13" are to your left and right, so west and east, respectively. Yes, they're both locked. |

Take the grinder, unground nutmeg, and bowl of ground nutmeg with you. Sure, why not. Of course, the basket's not getting any heavier, but that's normal for lateral adventure land...or is this Gregory Coke Land? Or someplace else? Heh. *grin* Look under the bed. You find a carving depicting a sperm whale. The wood seems to be oak. You take it. Why not... Peek through door #6, and see what you can see. A grove of elm trees. You hear turkeys gobbling, and a tabby kitten, being chased by a Boston terrier, pokes its head in at you. The cat doesn't look very happy to be chased. It probably smells the fish and oysters you've collected, too. |

(Ok, so I'm a cat person and not a dawg person ...) Oh sure, but you have to go through the door to do that. As soon as you're through the door, naturally it closes and locks behind you. You throw the carving at the dog and the kitten jumps into your arms, purring, as the terrier runs off. |

Can you also get the whale back, just in case, and add it to your bottomless inventory? (I do hope it's a bottomless inventory and not one of those infuriating Zork-like affairs.) Are we done with the oysters now? You haven't figured out their significance. Or the significance of anything. Or if you have, you haven't told me. Maybe describe the structure and shape of this new room? For svv of "room"...there's ocean to the east of us, and a nice big ship docked there. It can't be the tortie kitten...YOU are the tortiekitten.... Ok, back to the puzzle. Can you get closer to the house? If so, go check it out and try to get inside. You can, so you do. It is, as you suspected, styled as a small, typical house of the American Colonial period, or perhaps shortly after, so mid-late eighteenth century. You don't find much in it. Five doors: "14" and "9" to the north, "5" and "13" to the south, "11" to the west, and a door to the east which leads down to the sea. You came in by way of the "6", which closes behind you, but doesn't lock. You haven't found your "6" quarter, have you? |

In Gregory Coke Land, however, Everything Is Symbolic. (oh great, I'm speaking in tropes-speak...haha) Go sailing in the ship. Or rowing, or however this ship moves. It has many, many sails. I can't remember what to call this sort of ship, but it's huge. It doesn't seem to need the usual crewmen to deal with it though, for as soon as you, basket, and Tabby Kitten are on board, it begins to move southward, coming ashore in a bay where the sands are almost covered by blue crabs. |

Is there anything else on the beach or nearby? If not, you have the quarter, so you might as well collect the kittehs, take some crabs, and hop back on the boat. Sounds good to me, Tortiesibling. Enjoying your tour of Gregory Coke Land...or wherever we are supposed to be? It may well be representative of something... So you get the kittehs and the crabs, and get back in the boat. Before I'm asked: RECAP OF INVENTORY. 1 bottomless picnic basket containing: Letter from Captain Jack Sparrow (supposedly) 1 1985 quarter 6 quarters, numbered accordingly with small squares of paper taped to their reverse sides, the coinage dates on the obverse being marked over and illegible Blue Slinky Bag of trail mix, bag of Clementines, and small cask of water from the first boat Peaches Fishing rod/line/tackle/cleaning supplies Oysters Nutmeg grinder Fresh nutmeg Bowl of ground nutmeg Oak wood carving depicting a sperm whale Itty bitty tabby kitty You had fish, but you ate the trout. You also had a bass at one point, but the kitty ate it. blue crabs a piece of parchment, dated "April 28, 1788", and Quarter with 7 (bringing your total quarters to 8) itty bitty calico kitty |

Look at the piece of parchment. Does it say anything else? Does it look like it has anything to do with Maryland (which became a state on that day)? Or maybe it's George Washington's famous letter to Lafayette regarding the US Constitution which was written on that date? If all else fails, say "George Washington" repeatedly and see if it summons anyone. And since granting citizenship works apparently, George Washington is now an honorable citizen of Gregory Coke Land. |

In fact, it has everything to do with Maryland...or at least, 7 does. Or maybe it's George Washington's famous letter to Lafayette regarding the US Constitution which was written on that date? Not that, because I forgot that bit of trivia. But thanks for the reminder :-) If all else fails, say "George Washington" repeatedly and see if it summons anyone. And since granting citizenship works apparently, George Washington is now an honorable citizen of Gregory Coke Land. The calico kitteh is officially named George Washington of Gregory Coke Land. Awesome. :-) |

As you have no idea how to sail (or do you?) what seems to be a schooner, you hope it starts to move soon. |

As you have no idea how to sail (or do you?) what seems to be a schooner, you hope it starts to move soon. Is that what they call the Pocahontas movie type ship? All right then. You tell it to sail and it begins moving southward along the coast, eventually landing on a beach lined with palmettos. A flock of wild turkeys can be seen not far away. You see a woven basket sitting on the beach near where you land your ship. The turkeys seem vaguely interested in it...every so often, they come close, peck at it, then dart away again. |

Take a closer look at the basket and see what the turkeys are pecking at. It's a sweetgrass basket, filled with boiled peanuts. They look rather delicious, and the turkeys seem to think so too. Should we share? |

You share the trailmix and peanuts with the turkeys, keeping some of each for yourself. As you dig out another handful of peanuts, you see something shiny and silvery... |

Sail on! Take the basket if you'd like, and maybe a pet turkey? Of course you'd like. You take the basket, and a pet turkey, which TabbyKitteh and George Washington of Gregory Coke Land are eyeing suspiciously, then go back to the boat, sailing north again. Eventually you come back to land. |

While Balin & Tortie are exploring the terrain, would it help to recap the quarters, and where you found them? 1. Grain (with hens) 2. Fierce dog 3. Balin's 84 quarters (?) 4. Inside a bass 5. Inside an oyster 6. Tabby kitten 7. State of Maryland 8. Peanuts Would it help us to find connections between these items, or at least some sort of symbolism? |

Would it help to find more US states among the clues? Eg. The tabby was being chased by a Boston terrier, hence Massachusetts? The oyster might indicate Louisiana? And Georgia for the peanuts? I suppose the corn/grain could be Iowa or some such place. Also, is it relevant that the dog in (2) was a Great Dane? Aaaah .... how I love Wikipedia ... the Great Dane is the state dog of Pennsylvania! How bizarre that you should have a 'state dog'! But of course we have the Yorkshire Terrier, strangely more popular in France than here in Yorkshire. So perhaps: 1. Iowa 2. Pennsylvania 3. 4. 5. Louisiana 6. Massachusetts 7. Maryland 8. Georgia Is this OTRT? |

*yawn* Just got back from my first real grownup slumber party. *grin* Stayed up until 2 AM watching my friends drink Irish root beer and sticking to regular root beer for myself, playing games, watching movies...I'm running on less than six hours' sleep. All right, let's go sailing! Sounds good to me! You go back to the ship and set your course south. A couple of finches tag along just because they can, and eventually you come ashore in state #10, Virginia, as you now know. (I see no reason why the lateral version of the USA may not be known as Gregory Coke Land, however, ruled over by the kindly and benevolent Grand Master, Mr. Coke :-D) Cardinals sing among the dogwood trees, and you find oysters on the beach once again. The quarter, however, is in plain sight, not hidden in the least. It may be a trap...dare you risk getting it yourself? |

Where is the quarter? Just lying in the sand? Yes Can it be retrieved with the slinky? Can one of the cats retrieve it, perhaps? Tabby Kitten seems to be all over this one. She jumps out of the boat and brings back the quarter, nimbly diving out of the way of the bear trap that springs out of the sand... Or perhaps we can use the fishing rod? Failing that, let's just grab it and worry about traps later :-) No need, you got it, and you're not even down one kitty. Good for the poor thing... |

Yay for tabby kitty! =) Pick up some more oysters, then go sailing again. Sure thing, Balin. You do that, and land in #11...New York...finally. The house here has eight sides: the doors to the W, NW, N, and NE are all red and locked up tight. Three doors are on the East side, 14, 6, and 5. They're locked. 6 and 5 are glowing softly. You came in at the SE door, which is still open, and the South doors are 2 and 3, both locked. SW is another 2, locked. The house is more a sort of aviary; bass and trout swim in the water, and snapping turtles are kept in an open tank in the center of the room. Beavers make their home here, too, and bluebirds chase butterflies through the maple branches above you. } |

Like the place called the aviary at the zoo, which nonetheless has not just birds, but reptiles and fish in the water below, and trees and such things. |

But there's still that 1985 quarter from the beginning...hmmm. How old am I, again? :-P It was only to get you to start thinking about quarters, that's all. Well done; the rest are the state quarters, hence the obscured minting dates and reverse sides, which would have told you right away. |

Do we have something we can use to hold the syrup? A cup or bottle? There's a bottle right next to the tap. See, all you had to do was ask. :-D If there hadn't been, there's also that water cask that you might have emptied out (assuming it'd let you) Since I'm sure you want to, you fill the bottle with the maple sap. (You'd have to boil it to make actual syrup from it, of course) |

Are any of the doors unlocked? If so, head on through. (And I'm wondering where doors #12 and 13 are...)At the moment, the only unlocked one is the one you came in through. And since 12 and 13 are North Carolina and Rhode Island respectively, the whole doors thing was rather poorly thought out, I admit. I didn't realize that there was so much jumping back and forth between states until after I posted this puzzle, hence the addition of the boats. However, I will provide ways to get from state to state when doors don't work so well, and the doors will still exist, numbered appropriately. |

All right, then sail down to NC - it should be just past Virginia. Yep, it most certainly is. Hey, what do you know, you end up at Balin's beach house in Gregory Coke Land's version of NC. (Because he has to have one, all citizens of Gregory Coke Land with oceanside views are assigned one by the Secretary of Penguin Defense...aka me) Pine trees can be seen here and there, with squirrels visiting them. Cardinals are making their nests in the trees. Strawberries and blueberries are in abundance around the house, which is painted red and blue to match. The 'front' door faces east; there are five doors total, one each on the north and west walls and two on the south. You haven't looked inside yet, though the east door is open. |

Pick some of the strawberries and blueberries. Sure, why not. :-) Check out the squirrels and cardinals, and look inside the cardinals' nests for a quarter. No quarter, though you do find pine nuts in the squirrels' nests, and eggs in the cardinals'. Head inside the house - what does it look like? You walk inside and look around. It's your beach house, so you tell me, and then I'll tell you where to find your quarter. *grin* |

I have no idea what a beach house looks like, but all right... There's a chest of drawers on the north wall, a bed on the south wall, and a few potted plants (mint, parsley, basil, cilantro, etc) on the west wall. In the corner by the bed is a ladder leading upstairs, where there is a kitchen, well-stocked with all sorts of foods and appliances. There's also a living room with a TV and computer. All yours now...=) |

Fine, press the thing. You do so, and continue doing so, until the button informs you that it'll pay you to stop pressing. It offers you a nickel, dime, and quarter in turn. When it says "quarter", you stop pressing. A quarter falls into your hand from...somewhere. This is Gregory Coke Land after all. Anything can happen. |

All right - describe Rhode Island, along with whatever red herrings Gregory Coke Land throws at us. Did I forget to describe Rhode Island? How careless of me...although since it's so tiny that might've slipped my mind. You know, some people say its name is bigger than it is (for those not in the know, aka Woodworm and friends, the full name is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, though people are now campaigning to drop the "and Providence Plantations" because no one ever uses it anymore and some other reasons) There's a food stall; coffee milk, Rhode Island clam chowder, and greening apples. Everything seems to be free in Gregory Coke Land. |

Perhaps we should sit in the magic basket and hope that someone will throw a rope down? Any way of using the fishing tackle to cast upwards? Is our old friend the Slinky of any use? Or perhaps the tackle includes some very, very robust fishing line? Tie one end of this to the basket handle, and then send our kitteh up with the other end. Well, we could try using the sap to get a grip on the well walls, or even to allow the kitteh to do the same....This wouldn't have worked, as the walls are slimy already. Slimy and a little bit sticky doesn't work too well, but help is at hand Balin... Perhaps we should sit in the magic basket and hope that someone will throw a rope down? We get in the magic basket. It seems to be waiting for something. Any way of using the fishing tackle to cast upwards? Is our old friend the Slinky of any use? There is, in fact, some very good tackle, and attaching the Slinky works rather like a grappling hook, since in Gregory Coke Land's Vermont, Slinkys are made of very strong stuff. Or perhaps the tackle includes some very, very robust fishing line? It does. Tie one end of this to the basket handle, and then send our kitteh up with the other end. Being so cute, the kitteh will no doubt attract one of the good burghers of Vermont? You use the tackle and the basket to send teh tabby kitteh sailing, while George Washington of Gregory Coke Land keeps you company in teh magic basket. Before long the basket starts to rise and you get to the surface. When you get there, it's evident that Tabby pulled you out. How clever of her! |

Any hermit thrushes around the place (thankyou wikipedia & Galway Kinnell)? And those doors linking back southward to NY might be useful? Let's make sure we retrieve our slinky, and the magic basket. The ground is covered by a blanket of snow, just solid enough to walk on without falling. Nearby you see a barn and a stable. The kittehs seem rather anxious to get inside, as do the birds that have followed you so far. |

Being that the only sort of text adventure I've played is a LatVenture, I didn't recognize those as legitimate questions. Sorry. All right, re-asking the questions...Good plan. Go in the stable and look around. Describe what you see. You go into the stable. There are Morgan horses stabled in each of the fourteen stalls. They need food and water. Do the same for the barn. It's a dairy barn. You find cows waiting to be fed and milked. And the birds. Except you can't technically "go in the birds," but you know what I mean. You have a pet turkey, some purple finches, and now, some hermit thrushes you found in the barn hanging around. No sign of any quarters on them. |

Perhaps we should ask her... Is there any water source nearby? Do we have any water in our inventory? There's certainly a lot of snow...and there's some sort of heat source in the barn and stable keeping them warm. Try milking the cows. Hopefully there's a bucket nearby so we can actually contain the milk in something. You milk all forty cows, filling the milk cans from the bucket you find by the first one. |

"Tortiekitten, are nuts good for horses?" Horses probably wouldn't eat them, and cows wouldn't either. Cows are browsers and horses are grazers; they'd eat grass, but not pine cones or peanuts, and they probably wouldn't care about the pine nuts and boiled peanuts either. In other words, look around and see if there's any hay. HINT...where would one normally keep feed for livestock? Look in the milk bucket for a quarter. Nothing. |

Is there a hayloft in the barn or stable? If so, get some hay from it, and look around for that quarter as well. |

Hmmm...try the barn first, then the stable. You climb up the ladder into the hayloft, and find mountains of hay there, along with a pitchfork. You may presume the same thing is in the stable (because it is) |

Take the pitchfork and use it to send a good-sized bunch of the hay down to the horses and cows. See if you can uncover a quarter in the process. Do this in both the barn and stable, by the way. |

Please? Oooh, good Balin. *grins* All right then. You take the now empty milk bucket from the barn, go outside and fill it with snow, then take it into the stable, where the snow melts. Then, you use it to fill the horses' water supply. The horses seem very grateful. One of them even reaches out and nuzzles you. He also prances a little uncomfortably...maybe he has a stone in his shoe? |

No, I think he has a quarter in his shoe. Can you try and get it? You know...you may be right. You coax the horse to lift his hoof, and find a clod of dirt stuck there. Using the hoof pick lying in the stall for the purpose, you gently remove the dirt, and crush it, revealing the Vermont quarter. |

Take the quarter, and why not, let's keep the hoof pick with us as well. Sure, why not. So, on to Kentucky then? Yes. And you know, the wall behind the horse you just helped has gone sort of glowy. The horse has turned around in its stall to examine the light...it pokes its nose at the light and draws back, but not before you notice its nose disappear from view in the light (reappearing when it pulls back) |

Go through the liiiiiiiight...You hoist yourself up on the Morgan horse's back and ride it through the watery blue light. There's a whooshing sound and you are pulled, on horseback, through a tunnel seemingly made of blue light. When you come out the other side, you're in another stall, in a completely different stable. |

hums...Stargate, it's a great big world, with a great big swirl you can step inside to another world...or in this case Kentucky of Gregory Coke Land! LOL, indeed! Check the basket for lunch! Jug of milk, a glass, a blackberry pie, a plate, a pie server, and a fork. Is there a way out of the stable other than the door marked 16? Nope, everything's locked. How big is this straw basket, as compared to your Basket o' Holding? Well, on the outside, they're the same size. But this actually appears to be a normal, though somewhat small, picnic basket, as opposed to a TARDIS/Mary Poppins-carpet bag-esque thing, so I can safely say it won't hold much more than what it's got in it. |

You might find a silver sixpence in a Christmas cake, but as this is a pie, you find...naturally...the expected "15" quarter, and the door in the stall opens. |

As you look around this side of the stable, the other stalls are filled with Tennessee Walking Horses, the official state horse, in various colors; black, chestnut, sorrel, and bay, one shows signs of the champagne gene. Some of the horses show roan pattern, others pinto. There is a door at one end of the stable which stands open. |

Go through the open door. What do you see? What does "Allons-y" mean? I forgot. Oh, and I know 'proceed' only has two e's...how embarrassing...x.x In any case, you go through the door. Outside is a grove of tulip poplars, the state tree. Purple passionflowers grow wild around them, while purple irises grow around the stable in well-tended beds. Tomatoes are cultivated nearby, and channel catfish and largemouth bass inhabit the nearby river. There's a horse nearby, drinking from the river. It's wearing an empty saddle and seems a bit lost. It's a Tennessee Walking Horse, you can tell, but it looks like it wants to go somewhere else. |

Allons-y -> "Let's go!" Oh. Should have known, lol...*facepalm* Merci, mon ami. Take the horse to the stable. Are there any empty stalls? Just the one you came in by, with the Stargate-y tendency to run you back into Kentucky of Gregory Coke Land. But you'll need to pay the fare to get back, won't you...You notice the horse's odd red, white and blue blanket under the saddle. It's forked in front, where the red and white stripes come together, so the mane and neck aren't covered up, and something shiny is secured just in front of the saddle, which all but covers up the blue field. Is that trying to tell you something? |

Yes...take the shiny thing, hopefully a quarter. Well, to reach it, you have to mount the horse. As soon as you've done that, you take the shiny Tennessee quarter, and the horse brings you through the stalls from Tennessee back out through the Kentucky stable and keeps going; he leaps across flowing water and you land, tossed off the horse's back and into the soft grass, into a field of red carnations and white trillium. A Buckeye tree grows nearby, and a basket under it seems to be filled with Buckeye nuts, but there's something odd about them... |

Have a snack, then. Sounds good: what you have discovered are actually "Buckeye Confections", made of peanut butter fudge dipped in milk chocolate to resemble the buckeye nuts. After working your way through seventeen of them, you bite down on something that doesn't taste right. Removing it reveals a folded piece of paper embedded in a rather large confection. Unfolded, it reads, "Seventeenth I am in name, And by law since '53, But lack of resolution In the Constitution Questioned my legality." |

Copied: "On February 19, 1803, President Jefferson signed an act of Congress that approved Ohio's boundaries and constitution. However, Congress had never passed a resolution formally admitting Ohio as the 17th state. The current custom of Congress declaring an official date of statehood did not begin until 1812, with Louisiana's admission as the 18th state. Although no formal resolution of admission was required, when the oversight was discovered in 1953, Ohio congressman George H. Bender introduced a bill in Congress to admit Ohio to the Union retroactive to March 1, 1803. At a special session at the old state capital in Chillicothe, the Ohio state legislature approved a new petition for statehood that was delivered to Washington, D.C. on horseback. On August 7, 1953 (the year of Ohio's 150th anniversary), President Eisenhower signed an act that officially declared March 1, 1803 the date of Ohio's admittance into the Union." |

*copied information accurate, but cut for space* Very good! As you recite the information about Ohio's questionable statehood and the resolution confirming its place, a wizened old man, the first human you've seen in this place besides yourself, plies his way up the river on an old boat. "Coming aboard, son? Your fare's been paid." He flashes the '17' quarter at you, dropping it in your basket. "Time's a-wastin', sonny." He flashes you a crooked grin, one gold tooth glinting, and gives you a wink with his good eye...the left. His right eye is hidden behind a patch. |

OK then...ask him if we're close. But be careful. You open your mouth to ask him, but close it again quickly when he raises his hook threateningly and gives you his one-eyed glare. Nevertheless, before too much more time has passed, the ship docks on the waterfront. The first thing you see is a spooky old mansion overlooking the water. "Well, be off with ye. And watch out for yerself, 'tis a rough place, this," the old pirate advises. |

ooooo...spooky mansion...GO INSIDE!!! YAY!!! ALONS Y!!! Yes...yay, lol. You venture through the vine-covered, wrought iron gates, and up the front walk. The front yard seems to be taken up with grim statuary, wild magnolia trees, and even gravestones. Dead depressing. The front doors stand open. Once you enter, they close behind you, and you are left alone in the mansion's dimly lit foyer. A dusty chandelier hangs from the ceiling. You hear creaking and other strange noises. |

Look around. Is there anything else in the foyer? By the way, under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you walk under that chandelier. You know what happens in these mansions... shivers...Take a look around for the sources of the creaking and strange noises. The floor is wood paneling designed in a spiderweb pattern. There's an oval mirror on one wall, and white curtains closed over the windows. There are candles lighting the room set along the walls. Another pair of doors opens as you look for the source of the noises; it's your only way out. |

Look in the mirror. You see a ghostly reflection. Then go through the doors. You find yourself in an octagonal room. When the door shuts, you find yourself surrounded by old-fashioned portraits. Something seems not quite right about them... |

Do their eyes follow you? You wouldn't be surprised...you suspect that they might be. Try talking to the portraits. See if they respond. You just hear a dark, creepy ghostly laugh in response. Look around for a door out when you're done looking at the portraits. There isn't one...and is it just your imagination, or are the portraits...stretching? They seem to be getting taller, at any rate... |

Can you remove the portraits from the wall? If so, do so. No...despite the fact that they keep getting longer, they're still over your head. The floor must indeed be sinking. There's some kind of trick to all this, you're sure. Suddenly, a flash, like illumination from lightning, flickers throughout the room and you are plunged into darkness. There is a chilling scream, then nothing. |

No, as you didn't take any candles, if it's even possible, from this place. Saying "Lumos" earns another ghostly laugh, but a few seconds later, someone seems to take pity on you, because the room flickers back into dim light, and one of the bookcases has swung open, revealing a doorway. |

OK, head through the bookcase-doorway. You do, and it swings shut behind you, nearly catching poor George's tail. He pulls it back into the Basket at once. You're in a portrait gallery. Quite the storm is raging outside, judging by the lightning you can see through the rain-lashed windows. The portraits seem innocuous enough, but whenever you look at them and the lightning flashes, a ghoulish look comes about them...is that Medusa depicted there? |

stay away from the portraits and head down the hall. that's a very good idea. You continue down the hallway, keeping well away from the portraits on either side. Two busts, of a man's head and woman's head, seem to turn and glare at you as you reach the door. |

Can you go through the door? The door is standing open, so yes. (I'll presume that was a nudge to go through it.) As you pass through the door, you step out into another dimly lit corridor...it's lit by cobwebbed, dusty wall sconces and candelabras. The carpet is thick with dust, and cobwebs coat the walls and ceiling. You hear scuttling noises, ghostly moans, and the gloomy, haunting sound of an organ playing somewhere... |

Follow the sound of the organ. You go to do that, but find your way barred by...railroad tracks? Well, some sort of track, at any rate, wends its way through the halls of this mansion, and as you stand there contemplating, a spooky looking buggy rolls up to you and grinds to a halt, a safety bar waiting to be pulled down. |

Candelabrum, eh? Apparently so... Any sign of a quarter around here? Not yet. You enter the Conservatory next. As the buggy passes through the conservatory, you are spun to face backward. On the side of the room is a glass room. Dead flowers adorn the whole room with a coffin in the center. A raven sits perched atop a wreath with a banner that reads "Farewell". The coffin's lid is being raised by a pair of skeletal claws while a green glow radiates from the inside. The coffin seems to be nailed shut, which explains why the corpse inside is screaming for help. |

Do we have any tool which could be used to open the coffin? Is there anything in the room which could work for that purpose? Perhaps the claws? What happens if you approach the raven? If you try to touch it? If you try to take it? You can't get out; the buggy is moving fluidly past all this. I'm just describing what you can see. *grin* It might help if you knew just where you were...But the hermit thrushes, sensing your intent, swoop over and wake the raven up. It looses the coffin, easing one restless spirit, and joins you. You continue on. After leaving the conservatory, you travel through a dimly lit corridor. Portraits of family members, all of which resemble zombies and skeletons, hang upon these walls while monstrous voices echo through the halls. Many doors are seen here; their handles are jiggling and door-knockers are knocking with no one in sight. A cross-stitched sign reading "Tomb Sweet Tomb" hangs crookedly on the wall. A portrait of a man wearing a hangman's noose and holding an axe is seen to the left of the corridor. Next to that, a door seems to be breathing as if it were human. Two reliefs resembling a smiling and a snarling demon are found here as well. At the end of the corridor is a door with a pair of skeletal hands trying to open the door with an eerie green glow from inside. |

Wild shot - try taking the axe from the portrait. You can't leave the buggy. But your friends can. Still, nothing painted will get you anywhere. And I have absolutely no idea where we are...You're where grim grinning ghosts come out to socialize...there's nine hundred and nine happy haunts, but they always have room for one more. Onward then...? Indeed. Your buggy proceeds into the Clock Hall. It contains a single grandfather clock with demonic features. As the shadow of a claw reaches over the face of the clock, the hands spin wildly counter-clockwise, striking the number 13 every other second. The clock's swinging pendulum resembles a demon's pointed tail. |

(Not that that info helps me at all - I still haven't a clue what to do.)Just sit back, enjoy the ride, and come up with ingenious ideas on trying to interact with it. Just because you can't touch things doesn't mean teh itteh bitteh kittehs and the birds and such can't. Plus you have the Mansion's raven following you now. You are brought into the Seance Room. Madame Leota's head floats in her crystal ball, summoning up the spirits of the Haunted Mansion to come out and play. |

Goblins and ghoulies From last Halloween Awaken the spirits With your tambourine! Creepies and crawlies Toads in a pond Let there be music From regions beyond! Wizards and witches Wherever you dwell, Give us a hint By ringing a bell!" Anything that remotely resembles a voodoo doll? If so, (and if it's not a voodoo doll of you) stick the sewing and knitting needles inside it. Hmm. Not that you can see...After leaving the Seance circle, you arrive at a balcony overlooking festivities below in a ballroom, with a number of ghosts dancing and making merry. Ghosts are seen entering the room through a broken door, where a hearse is crashed with its coffin sliding out. Eerie wraiths are seen flying in and out of the windows above. A merry ghost is seen sitting atop the mantle of a fireplace (spitting out green flames) with his arm wrapped around a familiar bust. An elderly ghost is seen rocking back and forth in a chair while knitting a sweater. Many ghosts have gathered around a dinner table, where a birthday ghost is blowing out 13 candles on a cake. A ghost version of Julius Caesar can be seen at the far end of the table. A massive chandelier hangs above the table where the ghost of Cleopatra and Mark Antony also a couple of drunks are swinging about, hanging on with their canes. Another balcony is seen across the room, where a curtained doorway is situated between two portraits of duelists. From time to time, the ghosts of the two duelists appear and shoot each other with their pistols. A number of elegantly dressed couples are seen below, waltzing to a haunting version of the theme song "Grim Grinning Ghosts", played on a large organ. The organ is played by a ghostly gentleman while skull-like banshees fly out of the organ pipes. |

There are a few cheezburgers on the table (as per your request =P) and teh itteh bitteh kittehs go get them and bring them back, just before the buggy moves up into The Attic...passing portraits of wealthy men, each standing next to the same bride. A ghostly pianist is seen banging the keys on an old run-down piano, playing a grim version of Richard Wagner's Bridal March. |

How many portraits did you pass? And Wiki answers me nothing. Lots, I presume. It doesn't matter, anyway. Look around. Is there anyone else in the attic? Is there a ghostly bride and groom? The grooms' heads disappear from their shoulders in rhythm with the bride's loud heartbeat. For each husband the bride marries, she gains a strand of pearls. Eventually, you come across the bride herself, uttering her wedding vows in a slow, ominous voice. Halfway through each of her vows, an axe appears in her hands, disappearing before she starts her next vow. |

You settle down to your meal while around you, people drift past into pirate-infested waters, and you think on your task and the one who set you on it... So this is Disneyland, then? Well, New Orleans Square. Gregory Coke Land, Disneyland...figured they'd have to run into each other somewhere or other. Since I've never been to Louisiana, I borrowed my view of New Orleans from what I knew. =) (Incidentally, I've eaten Thanksgiving dinner in the Blue Bayou. You have to get reservations MONTHS in advance...) |

Is the quarter in the food? Well, at the end of the meal, you're served your pecan pie with a little pirate figurine, and a treasure chest. Inside the treasure chest is...your quarter! Any idea where the Pirate is? Somewhere around here, no doubt. Running from Davy Jones, I bet... |

Yippee! =) Leave the restaurant. Any means of transportation around? Well, were we really going to hang around Disneyland, the usual way would be through the door...the question is, how do we get to Indiana from here...I suppose we could always get into that boat our pirate friend has helpfully left here... |

Yayz!! =) So...can we backtrack through some of the other states to reach Indiana? Luckily, a glance at a map assures me that Indiana has access to the Wabash River, so we sail merrily up the river until we reach Indiana. We find a meadow of peonies when the boat lands, and a picnic table. A sugar cream pie (known locally as a Hoosier Pie) is on it, being attacked by hungry cardinals. At least, until teh itteh bitteh kittehs abandon their cheezburgers for these new potential snacks... |

Either take the birds, or let the itteh bitteh kittehs chase the birdies away. Take the pie, and look for a quarter in it. A cardinal drops teh quarter and flies into the Basket O'Holding for sanctuary. The others get away. You put the pie away for safekeeping as well. Teh Kittehs go back to teh cheezburgerz. |

*Sings* Sailing Down My Golden River Sailing down my golden river, Sun and water all my own, Yet I was never alone. Sun and water, old life givers, I'll have them where e'er I roam, And I was not far from home. Sunlight glancing on the water, Life and death are all my own, Yet I was never alone. Life to raise my sons and daughters, Golden sparkles in the foam, And I was not far from home. Sailing down this winding highway, Travelers from near and far, Yet I was never alone. Exploring all the little by-ways, Sighting all the distant stars, And I was not far from home. |

We give the peanuts to the turkeys. They seem very happy to have them. Soon all that's left is the sweetgrass basket! The turkeys (including our friend) run off. There's an orchard over where they're headed, and a picnic table. What's on it, I wonder? |

Pleez say there's a quarter on it...We'll see... OK, take the sweetgrass basket, and head over to the orchard and picnic table. What's on the table? The table has a red and white picnic tablecloth on it. It also has a bowl of pecans, a pecan pie, a bowl of blackberries, blackberry jam, a bowl of peaches and a peach cobbler on it, next to a loaf of bread and some butter. There's also a bottle of whiskey. Marble paperweights are holding down the corners of the tablecloth, because it's a bit windy out. |

Take EVERYTHING. Including the paperweights and tablecloth. You do that. The bottle of whiskey is half empty, and there's something rattling around inside it... |
