eat the paper. ...are you sure that's a good plan? no, wait, look at the paper. hmm, it seems to be a perfectly ordinary piece of looseleaf binder paper that any American (at least, I don't know about other countries) student would probably write on...three holes on the left side, blue lines, etc. Of course, presuming you meant read the paper...*evil grin*, this is what it says: "Dear Friend, You should be able to make it through this place alive, I hope. You will find up to four doors in each room. You may have to find a different way out, and you may have to backtrack, but eventually, you will find the treasure. Captain Jack Sparrow." I doubt it's really Jack Sparrow who wrote the note, but this is all you have to go on. That, and the 1985 American quarter Scotch-taped (sellotaped?) to the corner of the paper. Good luck. | ||

It seemed you were outside, but now that you think to look around more closely, you're not. You're inside what seems to be a clear glass or plastic building, like a greenhouse. can i see a door? is my motivation to get the treasure? You look around a bit. There's four doors; we'll call them North, West, East and South because there's one on each side of the rectangular building. Your motivation must be to get the treasure, since Captain Jack Sparrow said so. In other words, yes. is there a specific reason to think i might be in danger? Well, other than Captain Jack's say so, you can't think of anything. But then, you're not sure who or where or when you are, so that's not a surprise. Still, if the good Captain believes you may be in danger, you may well be. It's best to be careful. Nothing here looks dangerous so far, though. | ||

Several blue-plumaged hens are pecking around on the ground. One of them seems to have found something silvery and shiny. Look around, is there anything notable on the ground? A silvery, shiny object...it seems to be a coin. You'd have to get closer to see what kind. Luckily the fence is low enough to climb over. The hens don't seem to have noticed you yet. There's also a small bag of grain hanging on the fence. | ||

Take the grain and the coin. If the hens come for you, use the grain to distract them. You take the grain. The hens immediately come running, so you throw handfuls of the grain and they run for it, leaving the coin behind. It's another quarter. Taped to it on the reverse side is the number 1 on a paper square. It's blue lined, so probably binder paper again. As you examine the quarter, you hear a "click" as though a door has unlocked. Back to those peach trees at the beginning - are the peaches able to actually be picked? If so, take one. You go back and look at them, but the peach trees are still in blossom, no fruit. | ||

Ooh, yay! :-) Check the N/E/S/W doors, and if one is unlocked, head through it. The North door is the only one opened. You head through, and just after you do it slams shut and locks. You're in a...well, this building seems to be a meeting hall of sorts. It's also considerably larger than the greenhouse was, with three doors along the south wall (where you just came in), three along the north, and one each on the west and east ends. Unsurprisingly, all of them are locked. The walls are painted with forest scenes; deer and grouse among the hemlock trees while fireflies fly overhead in the night sky. A Great Dane sleeps in front of the eastern door. There's a fish tank near you with a few brook trout swimming around. Whoever built this place doesn't care much for tropical specimens, you'd guess. About fifty straight-backed wooden chairs face the lectern and podium in front of the eastern door, which the dog is guarding. | ||

Remembering that you now have two quarters, check the year on one labeled 1 please. Hmm, the second coin is indeed a quarter. Well spotted. The year on the front is obscured by a dark stain, and the "1" is very firmly taped on. It's probably not a good plan to take it off. Also take a closer look at the fish tank. You take a closer look. It's a freshwater fish tank like you might see in an aquarium or possibly in a seafood restaurant/market (I think they've got something like it in "The Fish Market" near home, Tortie. Haven't been in recently to check, though, and probably different fish.) The brook trout seem happy enough to swim in it. There's nothing odd inside the tank; all seems normal. | ||

Perhaps he was just feigning sleep?? In any case, barely noting the glint of silver between his teeth, you back away hastily... Check out the painted walls. Does anything stand out among them? ...and go to examine the walls. They're very nicely painted...you'd guess the painter to date from the eighteenth century or so, or to be a copyist of scenic art from that time period. The art could be from then, certainly. | ||

Great. More dogs. :-( Unfortunately, you'll have to deal with him...fortunately, you have the means. See if you can get a closer look at the fireflies - maybe by stacking the chairs or something. This isn't doing anything but killing time, but you try and move the chairs. They don't shift. You stand on a chair and can see them better; they're not much more than dots of paint in the painting, elaborately done though they are. Interesting, but certainly not worth exploring. | ||

It seems you don't have a choice in the matter. You're outside, now; at least this place is open to the air. There's a stream winding past the garden you've stepped out in; more of the brook trout from the tank seem to be enjoying their freedom here. A bed of Viola sororia carpets the ground, while red oak trees shade the brook. As you turn slowly around, you find that the garden is walled on two sides; North and West. The "3" door you just exited is on the West wall. Further down the wall is a "1" door. On the North wall are two doors marked "11". The brook flows down south and east, and the garden abruptly ends to be replaced by a sandy shore, where the stream flows into the ocean, a small boat tethered to a pole there. There's a gate on the beach side of the garden. It's locked, of course. | ||

Is the wall climbable? It is not. It's the wall of the building\s, so there's no way over it Can you untether the boat? (Don't do so, I just want to know if you can.) I'm sure you could if you could get to it. Unfortunately (and I only realized I forgot to elaborate after I posted it; mea maxima culpa) there's a fence and a gate blocking you from the shore. It's not possible to climb over, either...it looks like it's been electrically wired, I wouldn't want to try it. | ||

It's difficult to tell where it ends, but I'll just save you the worry and tell you it's impossible to get around it. No control panel is in evidence. How is the gate locked? With a sort of keypad device...a screen, QWERTY keyboard, etc. The screen wants you to enter some sort of password. | ||

In a much shorter time than it ought to (but this is a lateral puzzle), you are driven aground on a shoreline where sand and pebbles quickly give way to green grass and peach trees, heavy with ripe fruit. | ||

They don't seem the type for pearl oysters, but, not surprisingly, you find quarter number 5 in your fifth oyster. The five oysters go in the basket (no point opening them if you weren't going to keep them) Then check out the cabin. Well, it's pretty empty...there's a nutmeg grinder, a pile of unground nutmeg and a bowl half full of the ground spice on the table, and an empty bed in one corner, stripped of covers, but otherwise. There's a door labeled "6" on the north side of the cabin. It's slightly ajar. Doors marked "11" and "13" are to your left and right, so west and east, respectively. Yes, they're both locked. | ||

*yawn* Just got back from my first real grownup slumber party. *grin* Stayed up until 2 AM watching my friends drink Irish root beer and sticking to regular root beer for myself, playing games, watching movies...I'm running on less than six hours' sleep. I see you've been busy. Ha, the 84 quarters was just a jab at Balin. Tortie (I think) carelessly said the password should be the answer to Balin's puzzle, so...Anyway, let's see where we are now, and what you lot have been up to...oh, you've made some good progress. Tortie, have you been helping them?! Balin: All righty - what land have we reached now?One with a lot of birch trees and white tailed deer, not to mention mountains. I think help is at hand. Tortiesibling: I would like to know what is around here myself. Unfortunately I know we won't get a response until tommorow morning or afternoon. Hmmm...maybe there will be more of that tasty trout around... Yes, there's that too. You want it? Woodworm:While Balin & Tortie are exploring the terrain, would it help to recap the quarters, and where you found them? 1. Grain (with hens) 2. Fierce dog 3. Balin's 84 quarters (?) 4. Inside a bass 5. Inside an oyster 6. Tabby kitten 7. State of Maryland 8. Peanuts Would it help us to find connections between these items, or at least some sort of symbolism?Good work, and it would. Would it help to find more US states among the clues? It would Eg. The tabby was being chased by a Boston terrier, hence Massachusetts? The oyster might indicate Louisiana? And Georgia for the peanuts? I suppose the corn/grain could be Iowa or some such place. Also, is it relevant that the dog in (2) was a Great Dane? It is Aaaah .... how I love Wikipedia ... the Great Dane is the state dog of Pennsylvania! How bizarre that you should have a 'state dog'! All right, let's go sailing! Sounds good to me! You go back to the ship and set your course south. A couple of finches tag along just because they can, and eventually you come ashore in state #10, Virginia, as you now know. (I see no reason why the lateral version of the USA may not be known as Gregory Coke Land, however, ruled over by the kindly and benevolent Grand Master, Mr. Coke :-D) Cardinals sing among the dogwood trees, and you find oysters on the beach once again. The quarter, however, is in plain sight, not hidden in the least. It may be a trap...dare you risk getting it yourself? | ||

Yay for tabby kitty! =) Pick up some more oysters, then go sailing again. Sure thing, Balin. You do that, and land in #11...New York...finally. The house here has eight sides: the doors to the W, NW, N, and NE are all red and locked up tight. Three doors are on the East side, 14, 6, and 5. They're locked. 6 and 5 are glowing softly. You came in at the SE door, which is still open, and the South doors are 2 and 3, both locked. SW is another 2, locked. The house is more a sort of aviary; bass and trout swim in the water, and snapping turtles are kept in an open tank in the center of the room. Beavers make their home here, too, and bluebirds chase butterflies through the maple branches above you. } | ||

(And I'm wondering where doors #12 and 13 are...)At the moment, the only unlocked one is the one you came in through.And since 12 and 13 are North Carolina and Rhode Island respectively, the whole doors thing was rather poorly thought out, I admit. I didn't realize that there was so much jumping back and forth between states until after I posted this puzzle, hence the addition of the boats. However, I will provide ways to get from state to state when doors don't work so well, and the doors will still exist, numbered appropriately. | ||

All right, then sail down to NC - it should be just past Virginia. Yep, it most certainly is. Hey, what do you know, you end up at Balin's beach house in Gregory Coke Land's version of NC. (Because he has to have one, all citizens of Gregory Coke Land with oceanside views are assigned one by the Secretary of Penguin Defense...aka me) Pine trees can be seen here and there, with squirrels visiting them. Cardinals are making their nests in the trees. Strawberries and blueberries are in abundance around the house, which is painted red and blue to match. The 'front' door faces east; there are five doors total, one each on the north and west walls and two on the south. You haven't looked inside yet, though the east door is open. | ||

No quarter, though you do find pine nuts in the squirrels' nests, and eggs in the cardinals'. Head inside the house - what does it look like? You walk inside and look around. It's your beach house, so you tell me, and then I'll tell you where to find your quarter. *grin* | ||

There's a chest of drawers on the north wall, a bed on the south wall, and a few potted plants (mint, parsley, basil, cilantro, etc) on the west wall. In the corner by the bed is a ladder leading upstairs, where there is a kitchen, well-stocked with all sorts of foods and appliances. There's also a living room with a TV and computer. All yours now...=) | ||

How careless of me...although since it's so tiny that might've slipped my mind. You know, some people say its name is bigger than it is (for those not in the know, aka Woodworm and friends, the full name is Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, though people are now campaigning to drop the "and Providence Plantations" because no one ever uses it anymore and some other reasons) There's a food stall; coffee milk, Rhode Island clam chowder, and greening apples. Everything seems to be free in Gregory Coke Land. | ||

There is, in fact, some very good tackle, and attaching the Slinky works rather like a grappling hook, since in Gregory Coke Land's Vermont, Slinkys are made of very strong stuff. Or perhaps the tackle includes some very, very robust fishing line? It does. Tie one end of this to the basket handle, and then send our kitteh up with the other end. Being so cute, the kitteh will no doubt attract one of the good burghers of Vermont? Being that the only sort of text adventure I've played is a LatVenture, I didn't recognize those as legitimate questions. Sorry. All right, re-asking the questions...Good plan. Go in the stable and look around. Describe what you see. You go into the stable. There are Morgan horses stabled in each of the fourteen stalls. They need food and water. Do the same for the barn. It's a dairy barn. You find cows waiting to be fed and milked. And the birds. Except you can't technically "go in the birds," but you know what I mean. You have a pet turkey, some purple finches, and now, some hermit thrushes you found in the barn hanging around. No sign of any quarters on them. | ||

Cows are browsers and horses are grazers; they'd eat grass, but not pine cones or peanuts, and they probably wouldn't care about the pine nuts and boiled peanuts either.In other words, look around and see if there's any hay. As you look around this side of the stable, the other stalls are filled with Tennessee Walking Horses, the official state horse, in various colors; black, chestnut, sorrel, and bay, one shows signs of the champagne gene. Outside is a grove of tulip poplars, the state tree. Purple passionflowers grow wild around them, while purple irises grow around the stable in well-tended beds. Tomatoes are cultivated nearby, and channel catfish and largemouth bass inhabit the nearby river. There's a horse nearby, drinking from the river. It's wearing an empty saddle and seems a bit lost. It's a Tennessee Walking Horse, you can tell, but it looks like it wants to go somewhere else. | ||

Just the one you came in by, with the Stargate-y tendency to run you back into Kentucky of Gregory Coke Land. But you'll need to pay the fare to get back, won't you...You notice the horse's odd red, white and blue blanket under the saddle. It's forked in front, where the red and white stripes come together, so the mane and neck aren't covered up, and something shiny is secured just in front of the saddle, which all but covers up the blue field. Yes...take the shiny thing, hopefully a quarter. Well, to reach it, you have to mount the horse. As soon as you've done that, you take the shiny Tennessee quarter, and the horse brings you through the stalls from Tennessee back out through the Kentucky stable and keeps going; he leaps across flowing water and you land, tossed off the horse's back and into the soft grass, into a field of red carnations and white trillium. A Buckeye tree grows nearby, and a basket under it seems to be filled with Buckeye nuts, but there's something odd about them... | ||

As you pass through the door, you step out into another dimly lit corridor...it's lit by cobwebbed, dusty wall sconces and candelabras. The carpet is thick with dust, and cobwebs coat the walls and ceiling. You hear scuttling noises, ghostly moans, and the gloomy, haunting sound of an organ playing somewhere... | ||

Candelabrum, eh? Apparently so... Any sign of a quarter around here? Not yet. You enter the Conservatory next. As the buggy passes through the conservatory, you are spun to face backward. On the side of the room is a glass room. Dead flowers adorn the whole room with a coffin in the center. A raven sits perched atop a wreath with a banner that reads "Farewell". The coffin's lid is being raised by a pair of skeletal claws while a green glow radiates from the inside. The coffin seems to be nailed shut, which explains why the corpse inside is screaming for help. | ||

I'm just describing what you can see. *grin* It might help if you knew just where you were...But the hermit thrushes, sensing your intent, swoop over and wake the raven up. It looses the coffin, easing one restless spirit, and joins you. You continue on. After leaving the conservatory, you travel through a dimly lit corridor. Portraits of family members, all of which resemble zombies and skeletons, hang upon these walls while monstrous voices echo through the halls. Many doors are seen here; their handles are jiggling and door-knockers are knocking with no one in sight. A cross-stitched sign reading "Tomb Sweet Tomb" hangs crookedly on the wall. A portrait of a man wearing a hangman's noose and holding an axe is seen to the left of the corridor. Next to that, a door seems to be breathing as if it were human. Two reliefs resembling a smiling and a snarling demon are found here as well. At the end of the corridor is a door with a pair of skeletal hands trying to open the door with an eerie green glow from inside. | ||

Onward then...? Indeed. Your buggy proceeds into the Clock Hall. It contains a single grandfather clock with demonic features. As the shadow of a claw reaches over the face of the clock, the hands spin wildly counter-clockwise, striking the number 13 every other second. The clock's swinging pendulum resembles a demon's pointed tail. | ||

Not that you can see...After leaving the Seance circle, you arrive at a balcony overlooking festivities below in a ballroom, with a number of ghosts dancing and making merry. Ghosts are seen entering the room through a broken door, where a hearse is crashed with its coffin sliding out. Eerie wraiths are seen flying in and out of the windows above. A merry ghost is seen sitting atop the mantle of a fireplace (spitting out green flames) with his arm wrapped around a familiar bust. An elderly ghost is seen rocking back and forth in a chair while knitting a sweater. Many ghosts have gathered around a dinner table, where a birthday ghost is blowing out 13 candles on a cake. A ghost version of Julius Caesar can be seen at the far end of the table. A massive chandelier hangs above the table where the ghost of Cleopatra and Mark Antony also a couple of drunks are swinging about, hanging on with their canes. Another balcony is seen across the room, where a curtained doorway is situated between two portraits of duelists. From time to time, the ghosts of the two duelists appear and shoot each other with their pistols. A number of elegantly dressed couples are seen below, waltzing to a haunting version of the theme song "Grim Grinning Ghosts", played on a large organ. The organ is played by a ghostly gentleman while skull-like banshees fly out of the organ pipes. | ||

The grooms' heads disappear from their shoulders in rhythm with the bride's loud heartbeat. For each husband the bride marries, she gains a strand of pearls. Eventually, you come across the bride herself, uttering her wedding vows in a slow, ominous voice. Halfway through each of her vows, an axe appears in her hands, disappearing before she starts her next vow. | ||

Yayz!! =) So...can we backtrack through some of the other states to reach Indiana? Luckily, a glance at a map assures me that Indiana has access to the Wabash River, so we sail merrily up the river until we reach Indiana. We find a meadow of peonies when the boat lands, and a picnic table. A sugar cream pie (known locally as a Hoosier Pie) is on it, being attacked by hungry cardinals. At least, until teh itteh bitteh kittehs abandon their cheezburgers for these new potential snacks... | ||
