Bradley was not the least bit prejudiced against gays, but he was appalled to learn that his state's Boy Scout council had decided not to enforce the Boy Scouts of America's national ban against gay scouts and gay troop, leaders. How come? |

Because he thinks that people shouldn't be in a Boy Scout council unless they're willing to follow the Boy Scouts of America's rules? (this seems quite reasonable to me) Would he be equally upset if his local organisation had decided to allow gay people, but there was no national ban? Is Bradley gay? Is any specific gay person relevant? Does Bradley work for the Boy Scouts of America? Is he a Boy Scout? Is he a member of some rival organisation? |

was he appalled because he thought something bad would happen? to him? to a scout? to a gay person? to lots of people? did he think that something good would not happen? to him? to a scout? to a gay person? to lots of people? presumably he thinks this decision has particular implications - are these financial? political? ethical? racial? religious? educational? romantic? would he have felt the same way if a different organisation was involved? only an organisation involving children? is it reasonable for him to be appalled? are his motives altruistic? self interested? criminal? does he misunderstand something? |

Of boy scout age? Is his son (if he has one) an adult? Of boy scout age? Is some family member of Bradley's besides his son relevant? |

so he thought, because they did not uphold this ban, that something bad would happen to him personally? and his sexuality is not relevant - correct? did he think that, because they made this decision they would make a similar decision on another issue? that more nearly concerned him? that this decision was an indicator of a way of thinking that appalled him? the bad thing that might happen to him - physical harm? financial harm? emotional harm? loss of earnings? loss of job? loss of clients? death? loss of home? loss of friendships? loss of any personal relationship? loss of an opportunity of some sort? increased workload? increased stress? increased hassle in his life? bas relationships with others? increased costs to his way of living? loss of physical possessions? are any of these relevant about him - his race? nationality? job? hobby? pets? family? romantic relationships? education? place of residence? types of residence? politics? physical appearance? usual mode of transport? his food? his clothes? language spoken? religion? his mode of entertainment? |

When I wrote a column about what you should do if your son wants to be a Boy Scouts, I was all ready to send it off--then I discovered that the Boy Scout Council of my state was resisting the ban. This meant that I had to write another column in a hurry, which I found most distressing. (Let's keep our priorities straight here--so to speak.)
