Game - a sporting event? A board game? Intellectual pursuit? LTPF relevant (though I seriously doubt it)?

"Them" - a team?

Game - a sporting event? this A board game? Intellectual pursuit? LTPF relevant (though I seriously doubt it)? Oh yes, Kaylee. I forgot to tell you. I bet Balin $ 1 million that you would not $poyle my puzzle first, then when he $spoyled it, I won the bet. No, that didn't happen. Neither of us have that kind of money. I just wanted to say that.

Sorry Kaylee, forgot you.

"The Game" relevant? No.

Also, just realized that I replied to Balin's post as if he were Kaylee. So switch the names there. Actually, I think it would still work somewhat if we pretend I was talking to Kaylee while replying to Balin. Sure, let's go with that.

did the other team pay 1milion dollars? DOYD of "pay" (and whether the original team paid $1 million would DOYD of "pay" as well. You might want to explore this

Sport: a professional sport? Collegiate? Baseball? Football? Basketball? Hockey? College football

Irader, please refrain from 'yelling', it's not kind. I'm not Greg, but I'll answer this question, as I know the answer. :-) DOYD is an acronym for 'depends on your definition'...it basically means that the answer depends on your interpretation of the word in question (in this case, "pay")

If this team had tied, would they stil have payed 1 milion? There are no ties in college football, plus possible FA.
If this team had lost, would they stil have payed 1 milion? No, possible FA

Is just one game relevant? Would it help to figure out the specific team? Are bowl games relevant?

Did this happen in [LTPF list of decades]?

UConn football?

Did this happen in [LTPF list of decades]? This one. This year actually.

Did they lose money by making a bowl?

Are two teams relevant?

The "them" team: from [LTPF list of conferences]?

Is the money they lost a fine or penalty for something?
Or is it related to the payouts that each team gets from participating in bowl games? Is it the difference between the payout they got for the bowl they participated in and what they would have gotten had they played in a different bowl?

Is the game they won (the one that cost them the million) the bowl game? An earlier game the same season? Maybe a conference championship game?

Did they lose money by making a bowl? No

Are two teams relevant? The losing team is. Finding the winning team will help you only because this actually happened.

The "them" team: from [LTPF list of conferences]? Western Athletic Conference (as is the losing team)

Hint: The winning team was not the only team to lose $1 million.

Sorry, noel. missed your questions

Is the money they lost a fine or penalty for something? No
Or is it related to the payouts that each team gets from participating in bowl games? Yope Is it the difference between the payout they got for the bowl they participated in and what they would have gotten had they played in a different bowl? No, but ...

Is the game they won (the one that cost them the million) the bowl game? No An earlier game the same season? Yes Maybe a conference championship game? But not this

Hint: Keep in mind that for most conferences (including the WAC) Bowl revenue is split evenly among the teams in the conference regardless of which bowl they go to. On a side note, this is also one of the reasons Notre Dame has been so successful as an independent. They go to the good bowls, and don't have to worry about their revenue dropping because someone else in their conference went to the Beef O Brady's Bowl. However, Notre Dame is totally irrelevant here.

ohhh, I had forgotten that. I think that's a pretty huge hint!
Is it something along these lines?

Two teams in the same conference play each other. One of them was having a very good season, and would have gotten sent to a very good bowl had they won the game. However, the lower ranked team won the game, which knocked the higher ranked team out of contention for the big bowl game. This indirectly hurt the team that won, because they lost their share of the bowl payout that the losing team would have received.

Close?

Was the big bowl a BCS bowl? The national championship game? One of the big non-BCS bowls like the Capital One Bowl?

I think we have it close enough for a

*******SPOILER******

A couple weekends ago, Nevada beat Boise State. Boise State was undefeated at the time and likely headed for a BCS Bowl, which would have a payout of about $8-$9 million. With the loss, they wound up in the Maaco Bowl Las Vegas with a much lower payout. Hence, all schools in the WAC lost about $1 million in shared bowl revenue that they would have gotten had the Broncos gone to the BCS.

I always have this terrible tendency regarding Boise State to think of them as being not affiliated with a conference (like Notre Dame), when in reality they're just part of a non-AQ conference. I actually thought about Boise State earlier in the puzzle (when conferences were first mentioned), then promptly ruled them out because they're "not in a conference." Oops! My Big Ten/SEC roots are showing, I'm afraid.

Good choice of puzzle topic. Quite a lateral situation. I do think the shared bowl revenue hint gave too much away, though.
