Ok, so a group of construction workers was to be honored in public by a state official, but they disapproved of the honor as a form of protest and the honor itself was a reason of their protest? And the fact they are construction workers is relevant? Is that correct? How did it end? They were eventually honored or not? By their action they protested against: the honor itself? details of the honoring ceremony? honoring in general? way of honoring? person honoring? state? politicians? the reason of being honored? consequences of honor? The honor was: shaking hand with someone important? certification of some sort? putting their names somewhere? invitation somewhere? |

Relevant how long they had been steelworkers? A hundred plus years. Was the award given by another steelworker? A former steelworker? Neither. So, the honor is given to all steelworkers, right? Or all steelworkers from this particular city? This. To all steelworkers who participated in some certain project? If someone will become steelworker after the honor is given, will he also be included in this sign of recognition? Yes. Relevant how exactly they protested the honor? No. A demonstration? A strike? But neither of these - more likely a delegation to the city council. |

Did the officials who came up with the idea of honoring the steelworkers thought the honor would: be beneficial for steelworkers? be beneficial for the city? Or the officials thought they were obliged (or at least supposed) to offer the honor? It was connected with the hundredth anniversary of steelworking in the city? |

Did everyone honored disapprove of it? A majority of those honored? Only some? A few? Irrelevant. Those who didn't disapprove understood why the others did, and could sympathize. |

Would every professional group protest the honor under these circumstances? Was their behavior reasonable? Or rather emotional? Is it connected with self-governance or autonomy of the professional group? They were offered to go self-governance and they didn't wanted to? Maybe the honor was about assigning a special sign to them, something like logo or sort of "coat of arms"? |

Would every professional group protest the honor under these circumstances? The exact situation cannot be duplicated, but some professional groups would have reason to protest a similar honor under similar circumstances. Was their behavior reasonable? Or rather emotional? It was understandable, if perhaps a little overreacting. Is it connected with self-governance or autonomy of the professional group? No. They were offered to go self-governance and they didn't wanted to? No. Maybe the honor was about assigning a special sign to them, something like logo or sort of "coat of arms"? No. |

Was there a certain tradition in honouring people the way they were honoured? And did honouring the steelworkers constitute some deviation from the tradition? Did the steelworkers assume that the decision to honour was based on a wrong assumption? Or on an assumption which might be correct but which they didn't like? Maybe that the profession of a steelworker didn't have much of a future? |

Was there a certain tradition in honouring people the way they were honoured? No, though the honor itself is a traditional one, there are many ways of executing it. And did honouring the steelworkers constitute some deviation from the tradition? No; however, something about it felt inappropriate. Did the steelworkers assume that the decision to honour was based on a wrong assumption? Or on an assumption which might be correct but which they didn't like? Maybe that the profession of a steelworker didn't have much of a future? No to all. Recap: In a certain American city (assume one with lots of steelworkers) the local government wished to honor their steelworkers in a particular and common manner. The steelworkers protested an element of the honor, which had no financial value to the steelworkers but might be beneficial (in a minor way) to the city. The honor itself was not a coat of arms, a ceremony, a trophy, or a medal. It was not, strictly speaking, an award. The decision to grant the honor is irrelevant. The honor itself is the subject of the puzzle. Hint: I have absolutely no doubt that you have seen something similar to this, possibly even in your daily lives. You probably never will receive one, however. (Would be cool if the Admin did, though!) |

So, the steelworkers didn't want a monument because: it was to stand in a place considered inappropriate? it showed steelworkers in a stereotypical way, which they didn't like? they didn't like its artistic look? |

So they wanted a monument? So the thing they protested is "way of executing" this? Or particular feature of the monument? Maybe they didn't like how the honor was announced to them or to public? Were they consulted first whether they want it or not? |

Maybe the point was that the monument WASN'T made of steel? Yes. *** Spoiler *** A statue in honor of steelworkers was made of fiberglass - the steelworkers felt that was just, well, wrong. |
