Lisa asked Ben if he knew Chris. Ben answered "No - why should I?". What Lisa said then was surprising for Ben, although it's based on a rather common scrund. What did Lisa say and what's the scrund? Think of the three as teenagers, but it'd probably work with adults as well. |

OK, so Ben and Chris are from Germany, and Lisa is from America; do you mean the United States? Or do you mean another country in either North or South America (since you answered my question about continent, not country, with "America") |

Geographical: is it about where a city/town in Germany is located? Is it about where a region of Germany is located? Anything to do with Hamburg? Kaseburg? =P (iz capitil uf gregory coke land germinee i thinkz) Or is it about West and East Germany? Relevant that they were divided but now are not? WWII relevant? Hitler and the concentration camps locations' relevant? Or WWI relevant? Or, alternatively, is Germany's relative position to other countries relevant? Did they not know Germany was in Europe? (I'd say that was impossible, but considering my very own sibling thought *Wales* was in *Scotland*, and didn't know Scotland was attached to England...) Holy Roman Empire relevant? |

Could this have happened if Ben and Chris had been from another country (outside the US)? Or will it only work with Germany? Did she think they knew each other simply because they're both German? |

Do they think Germany is really small? The size of Monaco or Liechtenstein? So since it's so small everyone must be neighbours? |

Do they think Germany is really small? yesish The size of Monaco or Liechtenstein? not that small, but very small So since it's so small everyone must be neighbours? yesish, and that's close enough for the ********SPOILER******** Lisa said: "Because he's from Germany too!". Lots of Americans think of European countries as incredibly small - which they are, compared to the USA. But although Germany is only the size of Montana, it has a population of 82,000,000 so that the odds are quite low that two random Germans know each other. I thought it'd take you longer to figure that one out, but Kaylee's question if Germany is relevant brought you on the right track very fast - nice work, everyone! (: I, on the other hand, always thought of the US as very densely populated and was very surprised that the population is only about 300,000,000. |

Well, there are areas that are crazy dense, but then we have entire stretches (and states - Montana or Alaska, anyone?) that have pretty sparse or zero population. Germany appears to have just about the same pop.density as Maryland (5th highest of the states, not including DC, which is just ridiculously off the charts). Of course, Americans and Europeans apparently have different concepts of personal space -- maybe that's got something to do with it. Okay, just went and checked... Germany pop.density = 593 ppl/sq mile (229 /sq km) and US = 83 /sq mi (32 /sq km). Yeah, that IS a surprising overall number. Of course, I can't really speak to the scrund, since I've lived over there (granted, mostly on military bases, but still...). Anywho, the </ramble> tag needs to start working now. Interesting puzzle, Doriana!! :-) |
