She thought they couldn't possibly understand, so she did her best to explain. In the end, they explained it to her. |

Huh. Where to begin? Well, you're the first one to respond, so the beginning's an excellent place to start. *grin* "Their" identities relevant? Not separately, but collectively. Did "she" understand? She thought she did...until they changed her perspective on it. |

Is she you, Kaylee kitteh, in disguise? iz nawt mee. happeneded befoar kaylee kitteh was born. Is she H/A/F? yes Are they H/A/M? F? mostly HAMs are mentioned, though at least one HAF is mentioned in passing and judging by the context, the HAFs may actually outnumber the HAMs. The precise number of "they" is irrelevant, though. |

Was it an anthropologist explaining the meaning of a tribe's customs to members of the tribe? Like: "Honored Chief, I'm guessing that you sit while greeting newcomers as a sign of your authority and confidence?" "No, it's because I have a hangover and don't want to stand up." |

Was it an anthropologist Yes! explaining the meaning of a tribe's Yesish... customs to members of the tribe? But not explaining the customs of *their* tribe back to them. Like: "Honored Chief, I'm guessing that you sit while greeting newcomers as a sign of your authority and confidence?" No, she wasn't speaking of the tribe's customs that she was *visiting*... "No, it's because I have a hangover and don't want to stand up." ...however, *they* replied in this vein, so though this example isn't right, it's OTRT. RECAP with hints: An anthropologist visiting an African tribe was attempting to explain about something they had no prior knowledge of. Using the knowledge of their own customs, they explained the "correct" interpretation back to her. |

Was she discussing a custom of her own culture? A bit, yeah. She was discussing a work of literature famous in Western culture, and that did enter into it, quite a lot... Were people drunk? Tipsy at the very least. They did like to drink a lot of beer... Metaphysical stuff relevant? God? The soul? Afterlife? Extremely relevant. Families relevant? Yes Marriage? Yes Having children? Yope Food relevant? Only inasmuch as it related to the story she was trying to explain, so not much. |

Ophelia's death? the graveyard scene? poor Yorick? the fight btwn Laertes and Hamlet? the whole last scene (dead bodies a'plenty)? Rosencrantz and Guildenstern? old Hamlet's ghost? Horatio? ::pokes Kaylee:: I askeded first ::pouts::sorry, you must have crossposted with Balin and I missed it! Relevant parts (that co: "To be or not to be" speech? she couldn't think of a way to explain the soliloquy, and skipped it "The Mousetrap"? elaborate? it's been a while since I actually read Hamlet, but this phrase wasn't brought up. If it's the play-within-a-play, yes, relevant When Hamlet thinks his uncle is confessing and doesn't want to kill him b/c he'll die without his sins on him? GOOD question! She passed this over, because the Tiv have no concept of souls or afterlife, and would totally not have gotten that Ophelia crazy? yes Ophelia's death? yes the graveyard scene? some poor Yorick? no the fight btwn Laertes and Hamlet? the whole last scene (dead bodies a'plenty)? Yes and yes Rosencrantz and Guildenstern? yes old Hamlet's ghost? yes...the tribe called it an "omen" sent by a witch, as they do not understand ghosts Horatio? yes, he's the scholar, right? unfortunately, her translation of "one who knows things" also meant "witch"... (knows far too much about this play) no, that's good! you're doing well :-) |

So they interpreted Hamlet as per their religion? Do we need to find any specifics? for the puzzle statement, this is probably enough, although if you'd like to try, I'll let this puzzle stay open. Although "religion" may not be the right word...I think the point was that they had no understanding of religion...at least, not as we understand it. |

Revenge relevant? hmm...they believed that the revenge was immoral; Hamlet should not kill the man who had married his mother, and so was now his father, he should tell his "father" Claudius' age-mates so they could avenge the elder Hamlet. But they ended up excusing Hamlet for his later murders of Polonius and Claudius, for an interesting reason... |
