Were the other people present when he made the statement? Were they present when they met the first time? Or were they told about the incident at some later point? Is there a video or other kind of recording of him making the statement and this is how the other people learned about it? On Youtube? |

And one more time... :-) The first time they met, had she made some kind of joke but he thought that she was serious? And the second time they met, he referred to it? Or did it turn out that he misunderstood something? Something she had said previously? Did his statement reveal that he had a scrund? In Germany, there are different ways to express the time and sometimes, people who grew up with one sort of expression have problems interpreting the other kind of expression properly. I remember an indicent, when me and some friends of mine wanted to meet downtown some days after we all got to know each other and some were one hour early (or late? I dont remember, but in any case, some of us had to spend one hour waiting for the rest of the group) for that very reason. Did something similar happen here? |

(: Sure - here's an important point which has been touched on, but not figured out: You know the title is relevant, as part of the quote "Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open it and remove all doubt." The thing he had done on their first encounter, had he done it on purpose? Or had he done it unintentionally? Had he actually intended to do something else instead? If the first is a yes, did he tell her that he had intended to do it but she thought it had been a (more or less) stupid action and she thought it had simply been a mistake? So learning that he had done it on purpose made him seem foolish to her? If the second or third is a yes, had she thought that it had been a smart move but then he said that he didn't mean to do it? And that the thing he had actually wanted to do was stupid? |

So, going back to your hint. The first part of the quote is "Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool". So, was whatever he did made him look like a fool, right? Was it something that would generally be considered stupid? The second part is "than to open it and remove all doubt". So before their second encounter, the HAF might've thought that the HAM was a fool but wasn't completely certain? Meaning his action made him look foolish, but not completely? Was it, while it might normally be considered foolish, appropiate or even clever due to the circumstances when he did it, making him look not as much like a fool? Did his action itself make him seem foolish? Or a consequence of his action? If so, was the consequence witnessed by the HAF? Or was it something that happened after they parted? Did he tell her about the consequence on their second encounter? |

I suppose he had to identify him in a group of several men, right? Were all of them wearing baseball caps? From different teams? Is it important which team the cap he was wearing on their first encounter was from? Did he wear a different one at the police station? |

Did he (unintentionally) reveal his identity to HER? by saying something that revealed he had been in that parking lot at that time? or by admitting he had seen her before? |

Was the relevant incident in the parking lot outside the stadium after a baseball game? Did he say that he bought the hat there, but for some reason he could not have gotten it except from her? |

Was the relevant incident in the parking lot outside the stadium after a baseball game? No Did he say that he bought the hat there, but for some reason he could not have gotten it except from her? So no did he say "Hold on a moment, I'll put the hat on back to front like I was wearing it in the parkig lot?" :o) Yes! Well, not exactly this, but definitely the **********SPOILER********** The man had snatched a woman's purse in a parking lot and was later arrested. Later, in the police station, she was asked to identify him. The policeman gave him a baseball cap and told him to put it on forwards, as that was how the woman remembered the thief wearing it. He replied, "No, I'm gonna put it on backwards. That's the way I had it on when I took the purse." That story has been forwarded around the Internet for a long time, hence the last part of the puzzle statement. Nice work everyone - Doriana, Potato, Twilightseeker, Biograd, and Shez (I think that's everyone; if I missed you, consider this your inclusion). |

Nice puzzle and a really stupid thief! Reminds me of the story of that bank robber who gave the employee a slip of paper with his bank account information and asked her to transfer the money there :D |
