Brazenly plagiarizing the statement of Redwine's puzzle (don't worry, I asked her for permission) ;-p However, this puzzle is different from hers. Enjoy! He was waiting for it, although he had pretended to not want it. His cousin took it, although it was of no use for him. What's going on? |

He = he = his? Yes His cousin = him? Yes Is he H?A?M? H/Teen-Adult/M Is his cousin H?A?M? H/Teen-Adult/Irr It - animate? inanimate? This tangible? intangible? This True story? FYOI? FSEI? Scenario is FMOI to go along with the puzzle statement, but it's based on something that happens more or less regularly in real life. Time/Location relevant? Not for this puzzle, but for the basis of the puzzle it'd be Germany in the mid-90s or later |

Did his cousin want it? Yesish. Explore. Could his brother have taken it? Yes, if he tried. Could a non-relative have taken it? Same here Did the cousin take it in order to deprive him1 of it? No Did the cousin in fact deprive him of it, by taking it? Yes Could he give it back? No Did he? Thus no Relevant? Him not giving it back isn't relevant, but his inability to do so (which is due to the nature of "it") could help you figure out what "it" was. |

Okay, Tina and David it is! You said that Tina yesish-ly wanted it. Did she want something similar? Did she want it at first, but not later? Did she not want it at first, but wanted it later? Would the puzzle work with adults? Children? Was it no use for Tina because she already had it? Would having it have been an advantage for David? Did he need it to reach an aim? Is religion relevant? Education? |

Okay, Tina and David it is! You said that Tina yesish-ly wanted it. Right Did she want something similar? This is closest. She wanted to do something (and managed to do it) and "it" automatically came along with it. Did she want it at first, but not later? No Did she not want it at first, but wanted it later? No Would the puzzle work with adults? Yes Children? Theoretically, yes, but I consider it more unlikely. Was it no use for Tina because she already had it? No Would having it have been an advantage for David? In his opinion, it would've helped him. See next question. Did he need it to reach an aim? I haven't really defined the reason why he needed it. Let's say he has a problem of undefined nature. It doesn't necessarily involve having to reach a goal. Is religion relevant? Education? See above. Could be both, could be none :-) |

If David had taken it, could Tina still have done the related thing she wanted to do? Did she get it simply because she did what it took to get it before David did? Does "it" bring: happiness? Fame? Fortune? Pleasure? Luck? Status? Was David unhappy that Tina took it? Would Tina keep it for the rest of her life? Is there only than one "it" in the world? |

If David had taken it, could Tina still have done the related thing she wanted to do? Yes Did she get it simply because she did what it took to get it before David did? No, but she succeeded sooner Does "it" bring: happiness? Fame? Fortune? Pleasure? Luck? Status? None of those really Was David unhappy that Tina took it? He would be once he finds out Would Tina keep it for the rest of her life? Yes, because she can't give it away. Remember that it's something intangible. Is there only than one "it" in the world? There's an undefined number of them. |

Is it an activity? An activity is necessary to get "it" An event? No Doing something for the first time in their lives is relevant, correct? One can do it several times and the result wouldn't be different, but in this context, they both do it (Tina) or want to do it (David) for the first time in their lives. Can we call "it" an experience? Like some kind of adventure or ritual? No. Could David have it independently of Tina having it? Yes, but not at the same time Or is it the case that only one of them could have it? See answer to previous question RECAP + a little help, I assume that so far, my answers have been a bit confusing): Both David and Tina want to get an intangible, inanimate something from somebody else (let's call him... Andrew). David wants it because he hopes that it'll help him solve a problem, but he pretends not to want it. Tina wants it, too, but it has no practical use for her, and she doesn't want it in order to harm David. In order to get it, they have to do a certain activity. While David tried to do it earlier, Tina succeeded sooner than him and thus gets it. Since "it" is not a tangible thing, Tina can't give it to David, even if she wanted to, but David can try again to get it from Andrew later. Technically, two or more persons can have "it" at the same time under certain circumstances, but for the sake of convenience, let's say that only one person can have "it" at a time. |

Is "it" a form/mark of distinction (like an award, record, etc.)? a role (as in a theater production)? Is Andrew the only person from which anyone (not just David or Tina) can ever get "it"? Is the "it", that David could get from Andrew in the future, the same "it" that Tina has now? or are there multiple "its" that are made available from time to time? If David were to get "it" from Andrew, would Tina lose "it"? Is it even possible to lose "it" once it has been given? |

No to both Is Andrew the only person from which anyone (not just David or Tina) can ever get "it"? They could get it from several persons (in a broader sense, even I could give it, but it probably won't be of good quality). But they both want it from Andrew. Is the "it", that David could get from Andrew in the future, the same "it" that Tina has now? Not exactly the same or are there multiple "its" that are made available from time to time? Do the "its" that are made available over time correspond merely to the same thing, just at different times--like the seat example where one person could have it one day and another have it the next day? Does Andrew lose an "it" when someone else gets "it" from him? Did he have "it" for some time before Tina got it? or did "it" come into existence at that moment? |

Or would the advice only work once? This. If someone adresses Andrew a second time, it's probably either because his advance didn't work, to tell him that it did work, or because of a new problem. Is this a therapy talk show (like, e.g. Dr. Phil)? I'm not familiar with Dr. Phil, but I daresay it's at least remotely similar. The talk with "Andrew" is broadcasted, and that's relevant to part of the puzzle. Are people put on the air based on the order in which they call in? I think this also plays a role, but there are more criteria than that, all of which irrelevant for this puzzle. |

Did she make a prank call? Yes! ******************** SPOILER ******************** Andrew actually is Jürgen Domian, the moderator of a German telephone talk show. It's not actual phone counselling since the people who call in can talk to Domian about anything that's on their mind, including weird and amusing stuff, but a lot of people who call Domian do so because they have a problem and don't know who else to turn to. The Domian staff also includes psychologists who work in the background and if they wish, the callers can talk to them in private after having talked to Domian. David is such a person. He has a long-lasting problem that he doesn't want anyone to know about but since he feels the need to talk about it to somebody, he repeatedly tries to call Domian (he pretends not to want Domian's advice by not letting show that he has a problem in the first place). For some reason, however, he is never put through. His cousin, Tina, on the other hand, calls Domian wanting to make a prank call (that's something that actually happens every once in a while in the show). Unlike David, she is put through, depriving David of a potential chance to talk to Domian. She doesn't need the advice Domian gives her because she doesn't have the problem she tells him about. |
