Most of the time at UConn, I only check my mail twice a week or so. However, during Passover (which begins tonight at sundown and lasts eight days) I expect to check my mail almost every day during the holiday. Explain this. |

Email? "Snail" mail? Are you expecting something special from anyone in particular, in recognition of the holiday? A gift? |

Is the holiday relevant at all? Or are your checking your mail more often and the holiday just a coincidence? Are you expecting anything that's not related to passover? Are any passover traditions relevant? |

Are Passover's dietary rules relevant? The fact that they're stricter than normal Kosher rules? |

Most of the time, do you check your mail yourself? Does someone else check it for you? During Passover, are you checking your box for mail? Or something else? Something sent via US Mail? Are you checking for something specific? Perhaps something perishable? |

Are you specifically checking your mail more often - Or are you near your mailbox/the mail room more often for another reason and incidentally check your mail while you are there? Is the Passover story revelant? Traditions of the holiday? Modern observance of the holiday? *sigh* I really hope someone else has a lot more knowledge of Passover traditions than I do because I'm out of ideas on this one without researching extensively... |

do you go home for Passover? no Are you specifically checking your mail more often - Or are you near your mailbox/the mail room more often for another reason and incidentally check your mail while you are there? YES! Is the Passover story revelant? Traditions of the holiday? Modern observance of the holiday? The only relevant thing about the Holiday itself is the dietary laws. Everything else indirectly follows *sigh* I really hope someone else has a lot more knowledge of Passover traditions than I do because I'm out of ideas on this one without researching extensively... You don't need to know anything you don't already know. But inquiring about what you do know might help |

Are your mailboxes near your campus foodservice (or one of them if you have more than one)? Are there different dietary laws for during Passover than the rest of the time? Restrictions on when you can eat? What you can eat? |

Do you cook your own food during Passover, to keep in accordance with Passover dietary laws? If so, is the mail room near the kitchen you're using (maybe a shared dorm kitchen)? Is their only one dining commons that is preparing food following Kosher for Passover rules? Which is not the dining commons that you normally eat at? But which is closer to your mailbox than your normal dining commons? Is it simply that you eat out less during Passover, so you are around more often to check your mail? |

Are your mailboxes near your campus foodservice (or one of them if you have more than one)? There is more than one, and yes. Are there different dietary laws for during Passover than the rest of the time? Yes Restrictions on when you can eat? no What you can eat? Yes! is there a matzo shop near the mail room? No, but OTRT see below. Omitting irrelevant questions Is their only one dining commons that is preparing food following Kosher for Passover rules? Which is not the dining commons that you normally eat at? But which is closer to your mailbox than your normal dining commons? BINGO!!!!' ****SPOILER**** I live in the East Campus residential area. The mailroom for East used to be in East, in my dorm to be exact. However, because they required more housing this year than in previous years, they had to convert the mailroom to a dorm suite (actually, they had to convert the R.A. office to a dorm suite and the mail room to the R.A. office). They then moved East's mail room to the Towers residential area which is either about a 10 minute walk or a 5 minute bus ride (but then you need to wait for the bus). I don't always eat in East when it's not Passover because the food isn't always that good, so sometimes I'll eat at Towers (or one of the other five dining halls). When I do eat at Towers, which usually is about twice a week, I'll check my mail, but otherwise, I won't make the effort unless I'm expecting something. However, Towers Dining Hall is the only dining hall offering Kosher for Passover meals, so I'll be eating there every day during the Holiday. And I'll be checking my mail while I'm there. However, the "almost" every day was because on Saturday, due to Shabbat, Brunch/Lunch will be served at the Hillel Building and Not at Towers, while dinner will be leftovers also at Hillel, and not official. Also, on Sunday I will be eating at Towers, but I don't know if the mail room building is open. Technically speaking, the mail room is only open Monday - Friday from 9:00-7:15, however from my experience you can access your mail box whenever the Towers COmmunity Center (in which the mailroom is located) is open. You won't be able to claim a package if the mailroom is closed, but you can get letters and magazines out of your mailbox. However, I do not know if TCC is normally open on Sundays, since I have never tried, and even if it is, I don't know if it will be on Easter Sunday/Spring Weekend. Spring Weekend likely wouldn't close it, but since there are allegedly NO University sanctioned activities during Spring Weekend, including regularly scheduled ones such as Late Night movies on Friday night but excluding athletic events and religious events (ie Easter and Passover Services) I really don't know for sure. Plus it's Easter so it might be closed anyway. Either way, if I have a package it will have to wait until Monday. Of course, no mail will have come on Saturday, but depending on what time they process Friday's mail, that may be in there. I will be eating Friday Night dinner at Hillel, so I will be checking my mail during lunch at which point that day's mail probably won't be sorted. And Sports Illustrated generally comes on Fridays for me. But all other days I will be checking. Good job everyone, and especially Noel for the final push. On a side note, no residents outside of East Campus have to go nearly as far as us to get to their mailroom. North Campus has theirs in Northwest Campus which is right next to North but is a different area, while Shippee is in Buckley which is technically a different area even though they're both single buildings but they're closer to eachother than some Towers dorms are to their mailroom. West and the Grad Dorms are both in McMahon, but they are all in a cluster and the grad Dorms are generally clustered with McMahon anyway for most purposes. And the Hilltop Apartments are technically a different area than the Hilltop dorms but they get their mail there. But that's not even as big of a hassle as East getting their mail in Towers. Ok, my rant's done now. |

It's awful that your mail is so far away! My mail was always at the information desk in the lobby of my dorm when I was in college. It never occurred to me that some colleges would make students go half way across campus to get mail. That seems wrong, in a way. |

Eh, I went to a small school and all the mailboxes for all of our dorms were in the student center, where our only dining hall was located. |

I have to go halfway across campus to get my mail too (mail room is in Moseley). I live in Danieley, which is considered on campus but is so far from the rest of campus it might as well be off. I have to walk at least 10 minutes to get anywhere, except for one of the dining halls, which is 5-7 minutes away, and it's the dining hall I eat at the most. Vesica: I've been using the "unexpected workout plan" silver lining to get through the year. It's been a pain having to walk that far all the time. Gregory: I enjoy your rants. |
