Might as well hop on the "stupidity series" bandwagon... In an attempt to stay safe, he almost got himself killed. |

True story? FYOI? FSEI? He = himself? (one would think so, but just checking, you can never be too careful on the LTPF) H/A/M? Is this a Darwin Award type story? |

Is there a reason the title reads "stupibity"? Is dyslexia involved? Was he trying to stay safe from an accident? a natural occurrence (e.g. a tornado)? a criminal? |

Is seeking shelter involved? Staying at home? Seeking shelter in somebody else's home? Or in some other building? Or a cave? Or on or under a tree? Or under water? Locking himself up? In a safe room? Or bunker? Tying or chaining himself to something? Did he almost die because of... a lack of oxygen? an electric shock? falling? something falling onto him? somebody killing him? On porpose? By accident? the very thing he tried to protect himself from? When he was trying to safe himself, was he in immediate danger? Or was what he did a preemptive measure? Is crime involved? Is "he" himself a criminal? Who tried to avoid getting caught? |

So it is a Darwin Award story then? Is removing supporting items relevant? Did he cut off something? Is electricity relevant? Is the thing that fell onto him an electronic device? Or part thereof? Or is it something natural? Was he the only one who was in danger? Or could others have been in the same danger, had they been around, too? Did he create the danger himself? Was he fleeing? Was he looking for a safe place to rest or sleep? Were others with him when he tried to safe himself? When he started being in danger? Before? Is that relevant? |

Did he hide behind something? The others who were with him, were they teenagers, too? Or adults? Friends of him? Enemies? Before he had to seek shelter, had he done something that, while not being against the law, was something that he wasn't supposed to do? Or that he did although he would've needed somebody else's permission? |

The thing that almost fell on him, was it on top of the thing he hid behid? Was it part of it? Did it almost kill him because it didn't fall? Or did it fall but not exactly where he was? Or did it fall where he was and he managed to get away? Is the HTM's position during the hide relevant? Was he sitting? Squatting? Lying? Standing? Leaning against something? Is the time that passed between the HTM behind the thing and him almost getting killed relevant? If so, is it... seconds? minutes? hours? The thing that he hid behind, was it larger than... a computer tower? a table? a car? a door? an elephant? a house? a tree? Was it made of... wood? stone? concrete? steel? glass? plastic? rubber? Same questions for the thing that almost fell onto him. |

Is the time that passed between the HTM behind the thing and him almost getting killed relevant? Yes If so, is it... seconds? This, although it might have been second (singular) minutes? hours? The thing that he hid behind, was it larger than... a computer tower? a table? a car? a door? an elephant? a house? a tree? So the thing that almost killed him was a tree different from the one he hid behind? Did its trunk break (or was it cut) only partly, so that the treetop lowered but the tree didn't fall completely? If so, did the HTM cause the tree to (partly) fall? By stepping into or touching something when he hid behind the other tree? |

Did he try to save himself by hiding behind a tree that was standing in the direction opposite to the direction he expected the tree to fall? But the tree didn't fall the way he expected? So he ended up seeking shelter in the wrong direction? And the tree fell close to him? Is the way the persons made the tree fall relevant? If so, did they push it? One-day warning RECAP: Four people were pulling down a tree with a rope. When the tree began to fall, one of the teenagers hid behind a second tree in an attempt to stay safe; however, the tree ended up nearly falling on him. His choice to hide behind the tree was an incredibly dumb idea, for reasons you haven't figured out yet. HINT: The following two questions will help a LOT... Did he believe Tree 1 would fall away from him? NO! Were they pulling Tree 1 away from Tree 2? And NO! |

You're close, and it's that time, so... **********SPOILER********** This happened on a church retreat in the Adirondacks two years ago. Three of my friends were assigned by one of our guides to help pull down a dead tree (they had tossed a rope over a high branch) that was leaning over a tent. Their goal was to pull it towards a second, live tree so as to soften the blow. Before they pulled, the guide told the students, "As soon as you hear a crack, run." They pulled, the tree cracked and began to fall, and three people ran. The problem is, there were four people pulling. That fourth person -- one of the teenagers -- stood behind the tree that they were aiming at, squatted down, closed his eyes, and plugged his ears. Now, I'm assuming that he figured that that spot was the least likely to be hit by the tree, but I'm not sure; in any case, the falling tree hit the live tree, bounced off, and landed about a foot away from Our Hero. Being a bystander, I was laughing for the rest of the trip, as was everyone else (the guide was a bit annoyed though). As you figured out early on, this is a Darwin Award story; I sent it in the day I got home from the trip, and it somehow made it onto the website and into the most recent book (#6). Excellent work everyone for all your hard work. More $poylers to come. |
