Is the devil in this puzzle the counterpart of God? Or is it a tangible object? Is it the nickname of something/somebody? Were "they" in a situation that could be described as a "blessing in disguise"? Like, they first were unlucky, but their misfortune later turned into something good? If they had been misfortunate, did it involve ...an accident? ...(a) person(s) being injured? ...an illness? ...the death of (a) person(s)? ...the destruction of something? ...the loss of something? ...the loss of money? ...anything weather-related? They: >= 10 persons? >= 100 persons? >= 1000 persons? >= 10000 persons? >= 100000 persons? >= 1000000 persons? more? |

They = Male? Female? Adults? Children? All of these. Do they have any of the following in common: Where they live? This. Job? Nationality? This. A belief? This, of sorts (but not religion). Education? Hobby? A role, such as being parents, elected officials? Is the devil in this puzzle the counterpart of God? No. Or is it a tangible object? Is it the nickname of something/somebody? Yes. Were "they" in a situation that could be described as a "blessing in disguise"? Maybe -- I wouldn't say so, but it's arguable. Like, they first were unlucky, but their misfortune later turned into something good? A little. If they had been misfortunate, did it involve ...an accident? ...(a) person(s) being injured? ...an illness? ...the death of (a) person(s)? ...the destruction of something? This. ...the loss of something? And this. ...the loss of money? ...anything weather-related? They: >= 10 persons? >= 100 persons? A couple hundred at most. >= 1000 persons? >= 10000 persons? >= 100000 persons? >= 1000000 persons? more? |

was it something which caused disease? Depending on your definition of disease. was it something that affected the crops? No. was it something like fermentation? which spolied their produce but then they found it had produced alcohol? or a mould on a cheese which turned out to be tasty? like Roquefort? Either of these could actually serve as the answer, but I am looking for something much more specific. Wine producing relevant? No, but very close. |

I LOVE "because they were too drunk to fight?" "Whiskey, you're the devil, you're leadin' me astray / Over hills and mountains and to Americay ..." And, to be fair to Kaylee Kitteh, the chorus has the line, "There's whiskey in the jar." During the 90s I was married to a wonderful Dubliner who plays and sings Irish music and songs. My Paddy Kelleghan would probably have solved this in an instant. Still love the guy! Fiona |

Did all/most of the victors get drunk? Or just one? Did the victors do something foolish after drinking so much? Did they pass out? Were the defeated able to conquer the victors after the victors got drunk? |

Did all/most of the victors get drunk? Yes. Or just one? Did the victors do something foolish after drinking so much? Yes. Did they pass out? Yes. Were the defeated able to conquer the victors after the victors got drunk? Yes. ****SPOILER**** This is said to have occurred near Glasgow, Scotland. It's a modern song written by Alan Reid. "jaud" is a term for a "loose woman," and uisge beatha is the Scots word for whiskey. Chorus: Whisky is a devil jaud that burns the brains of man He'll dance or stagger, sing or fight, he'll argue black and blue is white The fairmer's wife, the widow and the weary working man They fill the air with curses on that devil, uisge beatha He watches for the gauger man that prowls the countryside He hides his liquid treasure, then waits for night and rides O'er the Torrance burn tae Glesca where there's plenty that will buy her She's that sweet forbidden devil uisge beatha A band of wild marauders in the colours of Colquhoun Were camped above the Campsie Moors above the Lennoxtoon The folk below were soon to know they were Clan Gregor men When they came sweeping doon the Campsie Glen They scattered a' before them, a' the weemin and the bairns They chased the fairming workers and the fairmers tae their hames They gathered up the cattle and they camped aside the hill And there they found the hidden whisky still The Campsie men assembled then tae see what could be done But shepherd lads and cottars cannae match a hieland band They cursed the thieving reivers and their heathen hieland cries As they drank their fill aneath the evening skies Whisky is a devil jaud that burns the brains o' men For in the night the hieland men fell drunk upon the ground The Campsie men crept up to them and slew them as they lay And a' was back in order by the day There's stills above the clachan, there's stills aroond the fells There's stills aboot the countryside nae gaugerman can smell But the one that snared the Gregor was mair valuable than ten Tae the honest fairmers o' the Campsie Glen Last chorus: Whisky is a devil jaud that burns the brains of man He'll dance or stagger, sing or fight, he'll argue black and blue is white The fairmer's wife, the widow and the weary working man They fill the air with blessings on that devil uisge beatha |
