Violetta is a law-abiding old lady. Vernon is a vicious criminal. But there is an unusual thing that they have in common, & it's related to the descriptions I have given of them. What is it?

Are they related? Do they know each other?

Has Vernon been in prison? Has Violetta ever committed a crime?

Vernon's age relevant? Older than Violetta? Younger?

Do they have an experience in common? A trait? A possession? An opinion?

Does the unusual thing have something to do with daily habits or chores? (such as brushing teeth or reading the news?)

Has Vernon committed a violent crime? Is that fact that Vernon has never been in prison relevant? Did Vernon ever get caught for a crime? Is Vernon still committing crimes (i.e. he has recently and will again)?

Do they live nearby? Do they live in different jurisdictions? Is Violetta doing something that's illegal where Vernon lives?

Should I (or we) be focusing on the unusual thing, or on the relatedness? You already have all the facts you need about Vernon: he committed a murder was not punished for it. You should now focus on finding getting more information about Violetta. When you have a full description of what is relevant about her, you will be best equipped to figure out the unusual thing they have in common.

Violetta's law-abidingness was introduced for dramatic contrast & is irrel to the solution. The similarity between Vernon & Violetta is very abstract. Find out some basic information about Violetta!

I wrote: "Nimue, is the quality more related than unusual?"

You said, "Please clarify."

I meant, say, if both of them are Down Syndrome people, that would be both related and unusual.

But if they are, um, both teachers, or both gay, or both thrill-seekers, that would suggest a relation in their inherited genes, whether or not they're related.

If both of them, otoh, live in different countries and love to host Halloween activities, that would be pretty darn unusual.

Great puzzle!
And more, soon, from sleepy Fiona

I wrote: "Nimue, is the quality more related than unusual?"

You said, "Please clarify."

I meant, say, if both of them are Down Syndrome people, that would be both related and unusual.

But if they are, um, both teachers, or both gay, or both thrill-seekers, that would suggest a relation in their inherited genes, whether or not they're related. Thanks--in this sense, they asre not related.

If both of them, otoh, live in different countries and love to host Halloween activities, that would be pretty darn unusual.

Great puzzle!Thanks! Great questions!
And more, soon, from sleepy Fiona

Is any of this relevant regarding her age:
The fact that she will likely not live much longer?
The fact that she will be 100 soon?
The fact that many people do not reach this age?
The way people of her age are treated? Or are viewed?

Is Violetta's financial situation relevant?

Is any of this relevant regarding her age:
The fact that she will likely not live much longer? no
The fact that she will be 100 soon? yes. You now have all the background information you need about Vernon & Violetta: Vernon committed a murder & did not get punished for it & Violetta will soon be 100.So: find the highly abstract property that they have in common!
The fact that many people do not reach this age? yes or yesish
The way people of her age are treated? no Or are viewed? no

Is Vernon also about to reach some milestone? Like the statute of limitations on his crime is soon to run out or something (getting this entirely from TV shows :P)? Will he soon reach a point where he is safe from jail?

Is the idea of having escaped some fate relevant - ie Vernon has escaped jail and Violetta has so far escaped dying?

Is Vernon also about to reach some milestone? irrel Like the statute of limitations on his crime is soon to run out or something (getting this entirely from TV shows :P)?No--that's where my knowledge of crime comes from too, & "Law & Order" repeatedly points out that there's no statute of limitations on murder. Will he soon reach a point where he is safe from jail? It's irrel whether he was tried & acquitted, making him safe because of double jeopardy or never suspected.

Is the idea of having escaped some fate relevant - ie Vernon has escaped jail and Violetta has so far escaped dying? no: Here's a HINT: Valerie, a grocery store cashier whose customer left in a hurry, has the same unusual property as Vernon & Violetta.

Did he kill someone who was loved by Violetta/ irrel. You're all OWT (on the wrong track), so here's ANOTHER hint: Describe Vernon's situation in one sentence. Then describe Violetta's probable future in one sentence in one sentence.

for vernon's situation is the death penalty relevant? and the fact that he is presumably avoiding it? so probably going to live longer than other murderers of his age? on average?

is it relevant that violetta will probably live longer than many other people do? that she will probably die in the next ten years?

for vernon's situation is the death penalty relevant? no and the fact that he is presumably avoiding it? the puzzle would work just as well if there were no death penaltyso probably going to live longer than other murderers of his age? irrel on average?I'm not even sure this is true in the US, since the such a small percentage of murderers get the death penalty, and I don't know the longevity statistics for long-term prisoners. (There's lots of violence in American prisons, but probably not much obesity.)

is it relevant that violetta will probably live longer than many other people do? yesish that she will probably die in the next ten years? no--& I sure hope she doesn't!!

did Virgil paint the floor in such a way that he is trapped in a corner? and can't get out without stepping on the paint? so will have to wait for it to dry? or get paint on his feet?

the things that are precluded from being left behind with valerie - foodstuffs? non-food items? fresh food? tins?

is the relevant thing about valerie that she is left holding things? has to put them back? has to look after them until he comes back? has to chase after the customer? has to call him back? that she now has things that belong to someone else?

Clever Hannah to the rescue!! This is close enough for me to declare a

***** SPOILER ************

I bet most of you have often heard & maybe even used the common sentences "He got away with murder" & "She'll live to be 100." But these sentences are almost used non-literally, to mean "He got away with a lot" & "She's very healthy & will live a long life."So Vernon & Violetta are similar in that a sentence that is commonly used non-literally applies to them literally. Virgil, as Clever Hannah observed, has literally painted himself into a corner. And what about grocery clerk Veronica, whose customer departed suddenly & prematurely? She was literally left holding the bag! Please don't be left without my new puzzle, which is at the bottom of the page.

There are lots of other cases of this sort: Suppose you have 2 acquaintances, Peter & Paul, & you rob the first to pay the second. Or suppose you have a cat who's trapped in a bag & you have to let it out. Or you're a tailor who's so sloppy that you're literally walking on pins & needles. And didn't Buzzard once post a puzzle about a dog who literally barked up the wrong tree? Does anyone what has become of Buzzard, by the way? I haven't seen her on the forum in years, alas!
