Dorinda often asks her friends and acquaintances,"Have you become a cannibal?" But of course, she doesn't really wonder whether they have. How come? |

Is the phrase "I'd bite my arm off for a __" relevant? (I heard my second cousins in England use it. Apparently it means you really want something.) |

Yeah, what's in toad in the hole and spotted dick, Shez? Not peanut butter, I presume, from Woodworm's utter abhorrence of said food *giggle* |

toad in the hole is sausages baked in Yorkshire pudding batter, and spotted dick is a suet pudding with lots of raisins, steamed in a big cloth. I don't think they were into healthy eating in those days! |

I guess not! a friend of mine used to call a completely different dish "toad in the hole" or sometimes "duck in the duck pond" - it was a piece of buttered bread with a circle cut out of the centre. Both outer ring and circle were fried in the same pan, and an egg was cracked into the centre of the ring while it cooked, so the egg fried as well. This was referred to as "toad in the hole" or if you cut the circle in half, you could put 'wings' on the egg to make a 'duck in the duck pond'. I just called it 'egg in toast' because the fancier names got confusing, LOL. |

is this related to a group of foods that have a name that makes them sound as though they are composed of human flesh? or blood? are we looking for a food that sounds human in some way? or a drink? or are we looking for an expression that would be cannibalistic if taken literally? does she ask this of her friends in response to something they say? something they do? |

which aspect of cannibalism is relevant here: eating human flesh? cooking human flesh? living in a part of the world where cannibalism once was practised? primitive tribal practices? is it relevant that some survivors of plane crashes have had to resort to cannibalism? the thing the friends say: does it relate to food? eating out? buying food? cooking food? do they say they have been doing something? |

Please let me kinda recap, so that I'm clear: Dorinda is reacting to something her friends said. They are daring her to try a food she's never eaten. To try a food that she thinks sounds disgusting, even though other people eat it? Is the food native to a particular region, such as haggis or (yuck) squirrel brains or buffalo balls, that type of thing? Just deleted a line when I saw that Dlcygnet had some great examples. (Thanks, Dlcygnet!) (Nimue, an irrelevancy: Kaylee wrote: "Is the phrase "I'd bite my arm off for a __" relevant?" I say, quite frequently, "I'd rather chew my leg off than" do some unpleasant task. And Michael Stipe of R.E.M. sings that in one of his songs. Sorry to gross you, Nimue, honey! But the phrase is not that uncommon in the south and eastern parts of the States.) Good puzzle! Fiona |

Nimue, I'm going back to the beginning, when you wrote: "Dorinda often asks her friends and acquaintances, have you become a cannibal?" She's being snide or snarky, right? Rather than horrified? Was the food something I could find in my local grocery store? Or is it a more specialized item? [And pork is said to match our bodies and tastes nearly exactly. Which makes me cry, because I love pigs. And let's get back to the puzzle.) Trying to be clear here, again, and hoping I'm not repeating: Is Dorinda sitting at a dinner table with friends? Relevant where they are? Relevant that they're eating at that moment? This is a really great puzzle, and I'm happy that I feel certain that this has nothing to do with penguins, or albatrosses, or Donner parties. (Right? RIGHT?) Just kidding. I want to be friends with you. [Balin: I see you mentioned "R.E.M. Peter365 will like you immediately." Bring him on! They are my favorite group (among many others, of course), and because my dad used to be the professor of "Evolution of Rock Music" at the Univ of Miami, sometimes I was allowed to join him at the podium and talk about the lyrics. Including explaining the lyrics and even *understanding* the damn lyrics.] All best to you! Fiona |

It is totally inappropriate for me to promote a movie here. But I love "127 Hours" and its star, James Franco, so much that, though it is only distantly related to cannibalism, I still *need* to mention and promote it. And I promise never to do this again; next time I'll go straight to the Chatroom. |

Nimue, I've collected a few Qs & As which struck me as maybe more important than others in finding the solution. If you don't mind reading your own words again: "which aspect of cannibalism is relevant here: eating human flesh?" yes "food group?" yesish "does she ask this of her friends in response to something they say?" yes--so of course, you should find out what! "do they say they have been doing something?" yes "does it include the words . . . eat?" often yesish "drink?" possibly yeaish "deliberately misinterpreting what people are saying?" yes. GOOOOOOOD QUESTION!! Being from another cultural background is not involved but deliberate misunderstanding most certainly is!! I'm now moving away from trying to identify the food(s) toward figuring out the conversations. Does this have to do specifically with food preparation? If so, do we need to ask questions about hunting refrigeration long-term winter storage eating raw eating only partially cooked sharing tidbits with pets (I suppose that wouldn't be a gross-out, though, unless you were on hands and knees sharing from the doggie bowl, lol) Or is it symbolic, such as communion at mass (I'm not religious but do understand the symbolism) Fiona PS: You remind me of & Prejudice: Lizzie says to Darcy, "And your defect is a propensity to hate everybody." "And yours," he replied, with a smile, "is wilfully to misunderstand them." |

'm now moving away from trying to identify the food(s) toward figuring out the conversations. I recommend trying to identify the type of food.. Does this have to do specifically with food preparation? no If so, do we need to ask questions about hunting refrigeration long-term winter storage eating raw eating only partially cooked sharing tidbits with pets (I suppose that wouldn't be a gross-out, though, unless you were on hands and knees sharing from the doggie bowl, lol) Or is it symbolic, such as communion at mass (I'm not religious but do understand the symbolism) no Fiona PS: You remind me of & Prejudice: Lizzie says to Darcy, "And your defect is a propensity to hate everybody." Nimue wrote: "I recommend trying to identify the type of food" and "no non-human animals are involved" but also "Relevant whether sea creature rather than land creature? no" - which seems a bit contradictory; but I'm up late, so maybe I'm muzzy. Can I try a different tack? If a *specific* food is intended, I'd like to toss out, for your consideration, a few colors of ordinary foods, to help me guess. Is that okay? white, like bacon fat white-ish, like mushroom soup and some fishes soft yellow white, like buttered biscuits (U.S. not U.K.) yellow, like egg yolk and some cheeses pink like shrimp pink like salmon pink like ham red like tomatoes / ketchup the porphyry color of salami various browns of steaks Do any of these match the item in your puzzle? Or am I totally OTWT? Well, it was a long shot. And if it made any of you laugh, then my work here is done. Cheers, Nimue! PS: I can list colors of foods for pages (part of a hobby I had once) - and also, my great friend Jim Hensley is a food photographer. He calls it "gastroporn" - what they do to make food look good enough to be in a cookbook. Frex, slathering petroleum by-products on a turkey to make it look deliciously shiny and moist for holiday dinners. Yum! |

Sorry!!!Here's a BLOOOPERRRRRRRR ALLLLERTT!!!!!!!!! It's irrel whether sea creatures, land creatures, or no creatures are involved Can I try a different tack? Sure!! If a *specific* food is intended, I'd like to toss out, for your consideration, a few colors of ordinary foods, to help me guess. Is that okay? Ditto!! white, like bacon fat This could be involved, but needn't be white-ish, like mushroom soup and some fishes soft yellow white, like buttered biscuits (U.S. not U.K.) ditto yellow, like egg yolk and some cheeses ditto pink like shrimp ditto pink like salmon ditto pink like ham ditto red like tomatoes / ketchup ditto the porphyry color of salami ditto various browns of steaks ditto Do any of these match the item in your puzzle? Or am I totally OTWT? You're looking at the wrong sort of category. But (HINT) of the foods you mention, buttered biscuits & bacon best fit the puzzle, with ham, salami, & steak next (not necessarily in that order.) But look for another category of foods that would fit even better. Well, it was a long shot. And if it made any of you laugh, then my work here is done. Cheers, Nimue! And so in likewise to you, Fiona! PS: I can list colors of foods for pages (part of a hobby I had once) - and also, my great friend Jim Hensley is a food photographer. I'm Dorinda, & whenever someone says something to me like, "I feel guilty about how I've been eating lately," I reply, "Oh, have you become a cannibal?" to make the obvious point that there's no moral significance to unhealthy eating, so people who indulge have no reason to feel guilty. This is actually the third puzzle I've posted that takes advantage of the fact that people get ridiculously moralistic about eating choices. Please check out my new puzzle, which I promise won't be on this subject. |
