Will and Ollie journeyed for 8 long months to reach a sign, but, once there, neither of them observed what the sign said. Explain.

The sign signify some place like (Welcome to L.A)?

The vehicle they used relevant?
Car? bike? motorbike? Self(i.e on foot}? Plane? Spacecraft?

Your question makes me think of around the world in 80 days. 8 long months o.O. I would say that in long 8 months they lost interest in the sign simply :D

Sign means sign like sign on board,Yes?

Is the sign in the language they know?

When they decided to travel did they wanted to read the sign? when they were travelling?

Is the sign readable?

Are they literally travelling?

Back here after months... Lots of new nicknames, well hi all! :-)

Is Ollie an animal? An object? Relevant what "he" exactly is?

Is there anything written on the sign? Is there something drawn?

Is it important to find out where exactly the sign is? And all the places Will and Ollie visited while travelling towards the sign?

Were they on planet Earth? If so, were they in [LTPF list of continents]?

Is there anything written on the sign? Yes
Is there something drawn? No

Is it important to find out where exactly the sign is? YES!
And all the places Will and Ollie visited while travelling towards the sign? Not each one, but in a general sense, yes

Nice to see you again too, Balin, and in great shape! 14000 posts, you were "only" about 3000 last time I was here :-)

Is Ollie a: Mammal? Fish? Bird? Insect? Reptile?
Is he Will's mean of transportation? (e.g. his horse) His pet? (Dog? Cat?)
Is Will actually aware of Ollie's existence and presence?

Is the sign in the U.S.? If so, is it in [LTPF list of US states]? Is it on a road? In a park? In a natural reserve? On a beach? On some building?

What's written on it: is it a whole sentence? Is it a single word? Is it a location name?

Did the sign basically say that here is a particular place? or give a direction to a place?
did it contain an instruction?
was it in written language? (i.e. not pictures or pictograms?)
in English?
Did Will and Ollie want to get to this place? to the place identified by this sign?
Did they, even if they did not notice what the sign says, realize that they were there?
Is any of them both color-blind? (and, thus, could not read a sign with red text on green)

Is Ollie a horse? (just in case)

I think Yatin means does it matter what century/decade this takes place in. For example, was it possible when Maine was part of the 13 colonies (as part of Massachusetts, no less, with other colonies in between them)? after Maine became a state but before the 20th century? during the 20th century? after the year 2000 and not before?

As per the title, are trees involved in any meaningful way? Nope. The title was a location clue as it's drawn from the state song of Maine. Since you smarties already figured that out, it probably won't help.

Or just as part of the landscape? There are trees as part of the landscape.

Did they want to reach the sign, or more generically the place where the sign is?

Does the sign indicate the name of: the park? The State? A city? A town/village? A region? A river? A forest?

Is this name a particular reference/hint to their names (e.g. "Ollieville", for instance) or to something relevant for them?

The other part of the sign text: is it a distance information (e.g. 20 miles)? A direction (e.g. turn left)? A welcome message? A simple information message (e.g. here is...)?

When they arrive to this place, do they: look for the sign? Find the sign? Look at the sign without reading it? Look for something else which is supposed to be not far from the sign?

Did they want to reach the sign, Yes-ish
or more generically the place where the sign is? Yes! This is more accurate.

Does the sign indicate the name of: the park? The State? A city? A town/village? A region? A river? A forest? None of these

Is this name a particular reference/hint to their names (e.g. "Ollieville", for instance) or to something relevant for them? Nope. The names are random.

The other part of the sign text: The other part isn't terribly relevant, but it may help put some of the pieces together.
is it a distance information (e.g. 20 miles)? Yes
A direction (e.g. turn left)? No
A welcome message? No
A simple information message (e.g. here is...)? Yes, the name of X

When they arrive to this place, do they: look for the sign? Yes
Find the sign? Yes
Look at the sign without reading it? Yes
Look for something else which is supposed to be not far from the sign? No

Does the sign indicate the place where they actually are, or something else? (e.g. "Here you are at 1000 miles from north pole")

The place indicated on the sign: is it a natural place (tree, lake, mountain, ...)? Or a man-made one (statue, bridge, ...)?

If they only wanted to reach the place, and not the sign, isn't it "normal" that they don't read it? Or am I missing a particular relevance of the sign here?

Does it have anything to do with the Canadian border? No, not the best of my knowledge

Shez
Is Willie blind? YES!!
and Ollie his guide dog? YES!

Well played, Shez!

Mattiel
Does the sign indicate the place where they actually are, or something else? Per your example, where they are.

The place indicated on the sign: is it a natural place (tree, lake, mountain, ...)? Yes, it's a mountain and something more...
Or a man-made one (statue, bridge, ...)? No

If they only wanted to reach the place, and not the sign, isn't it "normal" that they don't read it? Or am I missing a particular relevance of the sign here? See Shez's questions above. The place and the sign are in the same spot, give or take 3 feet. I don't know that I would say it is a "normal" for someone to look right at a sign but not read it. It's extremely difficult for someone who CAN read to look at readable text and NOT read it. (Really, try it sometime.)

So, we have made a very important discovery re: Will and Ollie. Will didn't "observe" the sign because he's blind. Ollie did not because he's a dog.

NOW...what's up with the journey? And the sign?

Is there also Braille on the sign? Did he think there was when he began the journey? Is the place of any special significant to blind people? Would Willie have likely begun the journey if he had full 20/20 vision? If he wore glasses? If he were legally blind but not totally blind (ie he could see at very close distances, and could probably read a book if it were two inches away from his face)?

does it have some significance for blind people? No

is it somewhere like Niagara falls? It's not a waterfall or a scenic spot per se. Is this what you meant?

To clarify...if you had asked "would he NOT have begun the journey if...", the answer would have been No for all.

I'm echoing others here, but will go ahead:

Were Willie and Ollie taking part in:

a sport?
a hike?
a contest?

Did they expect to meet other people and other dogs?

I'm in love with this puzzle. For some reason, stories about dogs who help people make me teary-eyed.

a contest? No

Did they expect to meet other people and other dogs? Probably

I'm in love with this puzzle. For some reason, stories about dogs who help people make me teary-eyed. Then break out the tissues, I think we have enough here for the You-Know-What.

****** SPOILER ******

On November 21, 1990, Bill Irwin became the first blind individual to complete a hike of the entire Appalachian Trail, all 2,000+ miles of it. His companion for the entire journey was Orient, a German Shepard guide dog. "It was truly a team effort, " explained Irwin. "There were times when Orient lost his footing and I could steady the leash attached to the dog's guide harness before he fell and there were other times when Orient helped to prevent me from falling."

He was the last “thru-hiker” (those attempting the entire trail) to complete the hike in 1990, finishing three and a half weeks behind the next nearest hiker and after a journey of 8 months.

Along the trail, Irwin and Orient were known as “the Orient Express” by fellow hikers. Irwin was able to read the trail signs with his fingertips for much of the journey, though there were two areas with different trail sign types that he could not read. In these sections, fellow hikers helped mark the trail for Irwin with sticks attached to sign posts. Orient also helped out, getting a sense for the trail and following the scent of other hikers and even learning to recognize the cairn style trail markers used in some areas.

His son made him audio tapes with information about the Trail from Georgia through Delaware and a trail staff member, learning of Bill’s trek, made tapes for the rest of his journey. A ten person support group at a church in Irwin’s hometown mailed packages to him along the journey as well.

Vesica, you are amazing -

I remember that, when I was still working at my library, I was cataloging a set of DVDs about harsh-climate adventures and the crazy people who - Well, hell, I don't care if the reckless people do what they do.

But I always cry about the dogs. I suppose you're familiar with the movie "8 Below"?
