Danielvs, if I say that "C.W." and "N.W." are connected to your puzzle, am I close? am I exact? This is a great puzzle, even if I'm totally wrong. You have a superb expertise for the sinister, mate! I'm sorry that my email isn't working. But I won't say another word. If I'm totally wrong, of course, you can just say "no" to what I wrote. Otherwise, I will watch in silence. RECAP: A 7-year-old boy is in a public place with his dad, mum and sister. (...) he got so curious that he decided to try. So, he held his breath and seconds later he was completely and permanently insane. Other people who did the same thing (on different occasions) also got completely insane or died. |

Was he told all the time to never hold breath? because otherwise something bad would happen? he would go insane? Was it common knowledge in that era that holding one's breath would result in insanity? or was it a myth? which, due to unusual circumstances, proved true in the case of this boy? Relevant that the boy is 7 years old? would the same have happened to an adult who held his breath? Was the boy's insanity the result of holding breath and still something else? Following up on your hint: I'm thinking not based on a true story, yes? Based on a book? TV show? Movie? From your imagination? Is the "Earth" they are on identical to Earth as we know it? Time period relevant? Nowish? Are they moving at the time this occurs? Walking? Riding inside a conveyance of some sort? You answered that, had he inhaled, he would not have breathed in air, only a gas, but it is not relevant what gas - correct? Do humans in this universe no longer need respiration to live? (she ponders, since breathing in gas that contains NO oxygen would result in death for current human physiological parameters.) Is it relevant how they get oxygen in their blood? Are the people in this puzzle alive? Human? Is the gas always present? Is it what everyone breathes in all the time? Is it only around in certain places? Certain times? Is everyone getting a "dose" of something? Something needed for living? Something that controls behavior? Controls thought? Controls some physiological process (like ovulation, digestion, etc.)? |

I actually meant not in the atmosphere for these questions since you had already indicated that they were breathing in 100% of the unknown gas and 0% air (regular, atmospheric air)...So...reasking: Is the gas/dosage always present around these people? Are they breathing it all the time? At certain times of day? On certain days of the year? Following a certain other event? Before a certain other event? You had already answered that they were indoors... Is it what everyone breathes in, indoors, all the time? Is it only inside certain places? Inside one place? Time Period: 2000-2100? 2101-2200? Later? In Earth's Past? Are they in a pre-human time period? Exploring the making them sleep - Do they need to be asleep for some reason? To keep them from seeing something? Hearing something? To help keep them alive while some event happens? Are they unable to fall asleep with out the dose? Is it a natural sleep? Can they awake during it without intervention? Random shot in the dark: Are they on actual planet earth or do they just think they are? (I know you said book, but I can't stop thinking of "Dark City".) |

Yes, they need the gas to fall asleep Is it a natural sleep? No, I guess Can they awake during it without intervention? Let's assume no Random shot in the dark: Are they on actual planet earth This or do they just think they are? No (I know you said book, but I can't stop thinking of "Dark City".) No, that's not it (: |

Are they about to time-travel? No Well, I guess there's not much left to find out... So here it goes: ****************SPOILERS************************ This puzzle is based on the short story "The Jaunt", published on Stephen King's book "Skeleton Crew" (1985), a collecion of short stories. Although I'm not a biiiig fan of Stephen King, I love sci-fi and found this story pretty amazing and never forgot it. For sci-fi lovers out there, I highly recommend reading it. It's short, you won't take more than a couple of hours to read it. XXIV century. Teleportation (known as "Jaunting"), is commonplace now, and has replaced airplanes and spaceships. As a family waits at the lounge to be jaunted to Mars, the father explains to their children the curious circumstances of the discovery of teleportation. He tells them how the scientist who developed it started the experiences with mice, and how the effect on them was at first inexplicable and disturbing: the teleported mice would either die instantly or behave strangely before dying moments later. Eventually, he realizes that the mice could only survive the "Jaunt effect" while unconscious. (However, he refrains from telling his children the gruesome account of what happened to the first human to be jaunted while conscious, a condemned murderer who was offered full pardon for agreeing with the experiment. The man 'came through' and immediately had a heart attack, having said only a single sentence: 'It's eternity in there'). The reason for the "Jaunt effect" is that while physically the process occurs almost instantaneously (<0.000000007 seconds), to a conscious mind it lasts an eternity and beyond; one is simply left alone with his thoughts for an unthinkable length of time (estimated billions of years), the result being that the mind will either shut itself down or be driven insane. (Don't read below if you intend to read the original short story). Listening to his father, the boy got so curious to know what lied 'out there' that he decided to find out. He held his breath when the mask with the gas was placed over his face (in order to be conscious while getting jaunted), and emerged on Mars completely insane, hair white with shock, corneas yellowed with age; he confirmed the terrible nature of the conscious Jaunt: "Longer than you think, Dad! It's longer than you think!". He had seen the unseeable forever and ever, and clawed his eyes out before the Jaunt attendants wheeled him away. Congratulations to Galfisk (who discovered quite early what this puzzle was about) and to all of you who participated, especially Balin and Shez, who never gave up. =) |
