The team would have lost the game had it not been for an unconscious man.

Did a player on the other team knock the player unconcsious? In a manner in violation of the rules? Which drew a penalty? Thus allowing the team to win? Or did it just knock him out of the game? And then the backup led them to victory? (Like Tom Brady, but Bledsoe broke his leg and wasn't exactly unconscious).

Did this take place during the playoffs? The Super Bowl? Did it take place in the last two minutes of a half? Thus, by rule, costing the team a timeout? Or if they had none, causing a 10-second runoff?

I will clarify use of Googlepedia on this puzzle: You can use it to look up anything (football rules especially, if you don't know them well) except the 2001 NFL season.

Did it happen on an offensive play? A defensive play? A special teams play? If offensive/defensive, was it a pass play? A run play? If special teams, was it a kickoff? A punt? A kickoff return? A punt return? A field goal/extra point? Is it relevant who on the other team knocked him unconscious? Is any aspect of the other team relevant other than the fact that they were involved in this play?

One more question... Is it relevant that Week 2 of the 2001 NFL Season was delayed to after Week 17 due to the 9/11 attacks? (Which on a side note, actually means the injury to Bledsoe occurred in Week 3, technically speaking)

84 Deion Branch?
11 Julian Edelman?
85 Chad Ochocinco?
17 Taylor Price?
18 Matthew Slater?
19 Brandon Tate?
10 Tiquan Underwood?
83 Wes Welker?

I'm guessing either Ochocinco or Welker was the WR in question...

Did the ball go out of bounds after he fumbled before it could be recovered? Was there a video review on the play? To see if the ball went out of bounds before it was recovered? To see if it was a catch+fumble or an incompletion? If not, should there have been? By which I mean, did someone of relevance say there should have been?

Ooh, thought.... Was the ruling on the field something that hurt the Patriots, and then because the player was unconscious, it gave Belichick time to challenge it (or, if inside two minutes for the booth to buzz the ref to review it) and the ruling was reversed to benefit New England? And they won?

I'm trying to clarify my picture of things...

Are there just two players directly involved in the 'incident'? Of opposite teams?

Is any other person (non-player) directly involved? Any other physical thing, other than the playing field itself and the line markings?

The player of Team A (Player A) receives a pass? That was meant for him? He receives it directly? Or off some other object/player/the ground?
He catches it fairly? He fumbles it? Drops it completely? Has it taken from him?

Somewhere during the above process he also steps out of bounds? From momentum? From a tackle or hit? Leaping? Spinning?

The player from Team B (Player B) ... does he cause Player A's fumble? Cause Player A's out of bounds? Does he recover the ball? Does Player B fumble the ball? Does Player B go out of bounds?

It's Player A that becomes unconscious?

That should flush out some FAs :-)

Ok, so they ruled that he caught it, then he dropped it, and then the other team's player picked it up. OK, here's the RECAP:

In an NFL game, the Patriots' wide receiver caught a pass near the sidelines but was hit by a cornerback. The hit caused the receiver to fumble and knocked him unconscious; the loose ball was recovered by the cornerback. The officials reviewed the play and gave the ball back to New England, but the catch and fumble were upheld, and the cornerback had clearly picked up the loose ball.

To determine: Why did the Patriots get the ball back?

HINT: This happened near the sidelines.

stop at the sidelines? No

I will say this: The ball itself did not physically cross the sidelines, but it was considered (legally) to have gone out of bounds. How?

Was part of the player out of bounds when he caught it? Had he gone out of bounds and then come back in before catching it?

Was part of the player out of bounds Yes when he caught it? No Had he gone out of bounds and then come back in before catching it? No. Remember, the ruling after the review was a (legal) catch, then fumble, ball returned to the Patriots.

wuz ball bouncez bak tu kitteh when kitteh fallz down, and it touchez out of boundz kitteh, so iz out of bounds? Yes!!

**********SPOILER**********

This happened in the 2001 seasons; the Patriots were playing the Bills. In overtime, David Patten (Patriots WR) caught a pass and was hit by Nate Clements (Bills CB). Patten was knocked unconscious and fell, fumbling; Clements recovered the ball. However, Patten had fallen partially out of bounds, and the bouncing ball rolled against his leg; therefore, by rule, the ball was out of bounds and the Patriots maintained possession. They went on to win the game on that drive.

Good work, Kaylee et al; new puzzle below.
