I watched an old movie with an "exotic" setting and an international cast. The accents couldn't be faulted, and I knew at least one of the actors was American, but a statement made by one of the characters indicated that this was not a U.S. production, and all the actors had been "coached," and not very well. It was also not a very good movie. What was the giveaway? |

I watched an old movie with an "exotic" setting and an international cast. By "exotic" you mean set in a foreign country? On a remote island? On the moon? Deep in the ocean? In the future? In the past? The accents couldn't be faulted, and I knew at least one of the actors was American You knew it beforehand (for example, from an external source, like an official cast list) or you realized it while watching the movie? a statement made by one of the characters indicated that this was not a U.S. production Did a material (such as one given by the producers) claimed that it was in fact a US production? Did the characters in the movie claim to be Americans and you discovered that the actors clearly weren't? It was also not a very good movie. Is this relevant? |

Is slang relevant? Colloquialisms? Grammar rules/structure? None of these, but explore. I watched an old movie with an "exotic" setting and an international cast. By "exotic" you mean set in a foreign country?"Foreign" to me - non U.S. No to the rest. On a remote island? On the moon? Deep in the ocean? In the future? In the past? The accents couldn't be faulted, and I knew at least one of the actors was American You knew it beforehand (for example, from an external source, like an official cast list){I knew because she was a fairly well-known actress.} or you realized it while watching the movie? No, but I think I would have even if I hadn't known who she was. a statement made by one of the characters indicated that this was not a U.S. production Did a material (such as one given by the producers) claimed that it was in fact a US production?n.r. Did the characters in the movie claim to be Americans and you discovered that the actors clearly weren't? I knew that she was a US citizen, as her character claimed to be in the movie. I wasn't sure about the actor portraying her husband. It was also not a very good movie. Is this relevant? Yes! They made an error showing lack of research and a sloppy production. Also it was a film the forum members would probably not have heard of. |

If you had only read the lines from the script, would you have come to the same conclusion? If you only heard the sound but did not watch the picture, would you have come to the same conclusion?Yes to both. The give-away was not a matter of accents. were all the actors speaking with American accents? No - mixed. did someone mispronounce a word? like "schedule"? or "aluminium"? Sorry, Shez. Mea culpa! No, not a matter of pronunciation. |

Can I do a quick recap here. You saw an old movie that was set in a country other than the US? One of the characters in the movie made a statement that quickly led you to deduce that this was not a US production? The character who made that statement was supposed to be amercian but the statement clearly indicated that the actor wasn't and hadn't been properly coached? Is that all correct? Was it the woman's husband who made the statement? Anything to do with between differences between US terminology and british? e.g. sidewalk/pavement faucet/tap? Is the movie generally regarded as a bad one or is this only your opinion? Was the film set in the UK? is the actor that made the statement very famous? still alive? |

Can I do a quick recap here. You saw an old movie that was set in a country other than the US? One of the characters in the movie made a statement that quickly led you to deduce that this was not a US production? Correct so far.The character who made that statement was supposed to be amercian and, in fact, was but the statement clearly indicated that the actor wasn't and hadn't been properly coached? "Coached" in the sense she was given lines that would indicate she was not American, though she was. Is that all correct? Was it the woman's husband who made the statement? AFAI Remember, is was she. Anything to do with between differences between US terminology and british? e.g. Noishsidewalk/pavement faucet/tap? None of these. More like a British term for which there is no US equivalent. Is the movie generally regarded as a bad one or is this only your opinion? It's my opinion, but I think many critics agreed. Certainly not a "blockbuster" or a "classic." Was the film set in the UK? No. Do you think of the UK as "exotic?"is the actor that made the statement very famous? Fairly famous at the time, but not so much so now.still alive?yes |

No. Do you think of the UK as "exotic?" D'oh I forgot that the location was described as exotic. Would definitely not put the UK in that bracket Are we allowed to ask elimination questions to find out the movie e.g. Was it made in (Insert LTPF list of decades here)? Or is the movie sufficiently obscure that finding out it's name will not help. Was the movie set in the Caribbean? Africa? Jungle setting? at sea? Genre : War? Adventure? Horror? Romance? Action? Thriller? Whodunnit? Crime/Gangster? Is the movie based on a play or book? relevant? |

Are we allowed to ask elimination questions to find out the movie e.g. Was it made in (Insert LTPF list of decades here)? 1960s, but don't think that will help much. Or is the movie sufficiently obscure that finding out it's name will not help. yes, fairly obscure. Was the movie set in the Caribbean? Africa? Jungle setting? at sea? Africa. Hint: The title of the movie refers to its setting. Genre : War? Adventure? Horror? Romance? Action? Thriller? Whodunnit? Crime/Gangster? Best described as psychological drama, I suppose. One critic said it was a "pot-boiler." Is the movie based on a play or book? relevant? Don't know; n.r. sci fi? No |

No, she said something an American would not say. or did she do something in a non-British way?Unless you saw the movie, you wouldn't be able to say exactly what she said, but you should be able to work out in what field or area the mistake was made. It has nothing to do with grammar, syntax, or different words for the same thing. |

Is eloping relevant?possibly Registry offices?yessish. Close enough for a *******************SPOILER***************** The movie was "Station Six Sahara." Carrol Baker's character spoke of marrying her husband by "special liscence" which does not exist in the USA. The actor playing her husband was an older man who did the entire performance with his teeth out. I wonder if that was to disguise his (British) accent? |
