Was the killer lying in wait for someone else in particular? Was it a case of mistaken identity? Could the killer not see who was coming up due to the curve of the stairs? Did he simply hear someone coming up, and stabbed before getting a good look? Is the reason for the knight's walking up the stairs relevant? Had he been sent for? Was he on his way to protect someone? He didn't know that the criminal would be lying in wait at the top of the stairs, right? But did he know that the criminal was in the castle? Did he recognise his presence as a threat? Was he stabbed with a sword? Was the criminal operating alone? Or was there a fellow criminal up the stairs? A group of them, maybe? |

Thanks! It's good to be back. Is the country relevant? Any wars or events going on that are integral to the puzzle? Did the criminal live in the castle? work there? If someone who lived in the castle had seen the criminal, would they have found it strange? would they have raised the alarm? or at least felt that they should? Was he a known criminal? Had he escaped from prison? Did he have some other identity marker? eg. was he a criminal who was also king? Was our knight in the habit of visiting the castle? kaylee kitteh humbly requests recat. *iz lost* You got it. RECAP: A man walked up the stairs. Seconds later, he was dead. The man is a knight in medieval times. He was killed by a known criminal at the top of a castle's tower. He went to the castle in order to rescue someone, but the criminal had "lured" him there in order to kill him. |

thankz yuo balin cat =) So, we're talking about a medieval knight here. Googlepedia reliably informs me that the medieval era (aka the Middle Ages) encompasses the 5th to the 15th centuries - quite a period. Did this happen in the Early Middle Ages (5th-10th century?) High Middle Ages (c. 1001-1300) or Late Middle Ages (1300-1500)? I presumed not before 1100 IMO, as the word 'knight' had not received its usual connotation by then - but then, this is the LTPF, and as I recently told Ciaokitteh, I believe, 'never assume anything'. He could have been a knight without being called one at the time, after all... Is it a true historical event? FYOI? FSEI? Was the knight of a military-monastic order? Knights Hospitaller, founded during the First Crusade, 1099 Order of Saint Lazarus established about 1100 Knights Templar, founded 1118, disbanded 1307 Teutonic Knights, established about 1190, and ruled the Monastic State of the Teutonic Knights in Prussia until 1525 Other orders were established in the Iberian peninsula, under the influence of the orders in the Holy Land and the Crusader movement of the Reconquista: the Order of Aviz, established in Avis in 1143 the Order of Alcántara, established in Alcántara in 1156 the Order of Calatrava, established in Calatrava in 1158 the Order of Santiago, established in Santiago in 1164. Was the knight of a chivalric order? the Order of Saint George, founded by Charles I of Hungary in 1325/6 the Order of the Most Holy Annunciation, founded by count Amadeus VI in 1346 the Order of the Garter, founded by Edward III of England around 1348 the Order of the Dragon, founded by King Sigismund of Luxemburg in 1408 the Order of the Golden Fleece, founded by Philip III, Duke of Burgundy in 1430 the Order of Saint Michael, founded by Louis XI of France in 1469 the Order of the Thistle, founded by King James VII of Scotland (also known as James II of England) in 1687 the Order of the Elephant, which may have been first founded by Christian I of Denmark, but was founded in its current form by King Christian V in 1693 the Order of the Bath, founded by George I in 1725 Was the knight from England? Scotland? Ireland? Wales? Spain? The Low Countries? France? Germany? Other? |

So, while the knight is heroically running into the castle, the princess is actually trapped somewhere, just not in the castle, right? Was the criminal responsible for her being locked up? Has she been locked up for a short period of time (ie. just so that she's out of the way when the knight comes into the castle) or has she already been there for quite some time? Is a dragon involved by the way? I hope so. I like dragons. |

Does the criminal want to marry the princess himself? Is it important to know exactly how long the princess has been locked up for? Did the entire kingdom know that their princess was trapped? Did they know that the one to rescue her would win her hand? Are the king and queen relevant at all? This castle: did the princess ever live there? the queen? the king? Is our knight the first one to come running into the castle on this rescue mission? Have there been others before him? Did they also die at the hands of the criminal? Will there be others after him? Wow, so this criminal is in the business of killing off would-be princes. Please correct any bits where I've gone wrong, but here's what I've got so far: In a kingdom far, far away, there lives a king, queen, and princess. There also lives a nasty criminal who works in a castle. However, this castle is not owned by the aforementioned king, queen and princess and they do not spend their time there. Now the nasty criminal kidnaps the princess and locks her up in a mysterious place. The king and queen are distraught. They give out that their daughter has been kidnapped, and, viewing her as property, decide that any knight who rescues her will be rewarded with her hand. For reasons unknown, the knights believe that the princess is trapped in the criminal's castle. They come in droves, only to be killed by the sly criminal. What we need to find out is where the princess really is, what the criminal intends to do with her, how the criminal benefits from the killing of all these knights, and why the knights believe that the princess is in this particular castle. Is this all correct? A question: do the king and queen know where the princess really is? Do they also think that she is in this castle? Also, will there be a dragon in the sequel? |

What we need to find out is where the princess really is, You don't need to know this, what the criminal intends to do with her, Or this, how the criminal benefits from the killing of all these knights, Or even this... and why the knights believe that the princess is in this particular castle. ...But you do need to know THIS. Is this all correct? Your recap, however, was spot-on. A question: do the king and queen know where the princess really is? No and irrel Do they also think that she is in this castle? Ditto Also, will there be a dragon in the sequel? Hmmm... maybe... |

When you say the criminal works at the castle, do you mean that he carries out his dirty killing work there? Or does he have a proper job that he does in the castle? Does the criminal own the castle? Were the knights informed by someone that the princess was in this particular castle? Did they see a sign? Or some other visual cue? A letter maybe? Or did they perhaps gain this false information through their ears? Does the castle have a name? |

This misleading thing that the knights saw: Did they see it near the castle? Did they see it as they were making their way to rescue the princess? Was it writing of any sort? A picture? A living thing? A person? An animal? vegetation? Did the criminal fire up his jet, and write a message in the sky - "Sir Knight, the princess is to e found at 91 Castle Road"? |

As the knights were setting out to rescue the princess, did they have a destination in mind? The right one? And this this-ish person they saw made them change their minds and believe her to be in the castle? Or did they just ride out randomly, relying on their innate princess-sniffing-out abilities? Was the this-ish person a corpse? |

No And this this-ish person they saw made them change their minds No and believe her to be in the castle? Yes Or did they just ride out randomly, relying on their innate princess-sniffing-out abilities? No. It was the villain's castle, so it was an obvious first investigation point. Was the this-ish person a corpse? No. It was a person, but there is still an -ish attached. |

Did the knights think that they recognised the person? Did they think they saw the princess? Looking forlornly out of a tower window? Was it the criminal disguised as the princess? Someone else who looked like her? |

Did the knights think that they recognised the person? Did they think they saw the princess? Looking forlornly out of a tower window? Was it the criminal disguised as the princess? Yes to all of these, which means... Someone else who looked like her? **********SPOILER********** In medieval times, there was once a kingdom, with a king and princess and knights... you know, like you read in stories. One day, the beautiful princess was kidnapped by a wicked man who lived in another castle. The king offered his daughter's hand in marriage to whoever could rescue her. Several knights went out to try and save her, but none returned. Finally, one brave knight decided that he must do his duty and rescue the princess. He decided a good place to look would be the villain's castle. As he approached, he saw the unmistakable golden hair of the princess fluttering out the tower's window. He knew where to go now. After gaining entrance to the castle, he walked up the spiral staircase to the tower door. He opened the door to reveal... the criminal, wearing a golden wig so as to imitate the princess, who was locked up somewhere else. Caught off guard, the knight was promptly run through with the criminal's sword. So... A man walked up the stairs. Seconds later, he was dead. What happened to the princess? Well... that's for another puzzle. ;-) Excellent work everyone, especially Jumpingjack, who solved it. New puzzle in a bit (maybe the sequel, if I can think it up). |
