[IrishElk] The Mission

Postby irishelk » Thu Jan 12, 2017 12:46 pm

One day Patrick walks into a busy New York police station, and confesses to a very minor crime he had just committed, although he had gotten away with his crime many times in the past and had no reason to think he would be caught today. Officers take him very seriously and question him for an hour before ultimately releasing him. What did he do?

Relevant that this was in New York? Could this happen in another US City? Outside the US? Time relevant?
Would the police have reacted the same way had he not committed the petty crime many times?

Was the minor crime related to theft? traffic violations? disorderly conduct? drugs?
Did Patrick warn the police of an imminient danger? Of another crime going on?

Is this based on a short story?

Was Patrick himself recently a victim of a crime?

Was there something relevant about the circumstances of that particular day?

Did he anticipate that he would be pulled aside and questioned? Did he anticipate that he would then be let go?

Is he ultimately doing something helpful for the police? Is he doing it for his own selfish interest? Will the questioning result in something negative (incriminating information, an arrest etc) for another criminal?

LemonCurry

Relevant that this was in New York? Not very. Could this happen in another US City? In some, would be slightly different in others. Outside the US? Same. Time relevant? No.
Would the police have reacted the same way had he not committed the petty crime many times? Yes.

Was the minor crime related to theft? traffic violations? disorderly conduct? drugs? No to all.
Did Patrick warn the police of an imminent danger? Yesish. Of another crime going on? Yope.

Grip

Is this based on a short story? No.

Was Patrick himself recently a victim of a crime? No.

WiZ

Was there something relevant about the circumstances of that particular day? Noish.

Did he anticipate that he would be pulled aside and questioned? Probably. Did he anticipate that he would then be let go? Irr., he might or might not have.

Is he ultimately doing something helpful for the police? Yes. Is he doing it for his own selfish interest? No or not primarily. Will the questioning result in something negative (incriminating information, an arrest etc) for another criminal? YES.

Recently: in the previous few minutes? Hours? Days?

Is his crime one that some of us on the LTPF are likely to have committed? Did the other criminal commit the same crime? A more serious one? Relevant what crime? And is it only the one other person (other than Patrick and the police) who is relevant?

The officers who questioned him knew about the other crime, correct? Did the petty criminal witness the big crime? Witness something leading up to it? Or the aftermath? Or something related to it? Did he commit a crime against anyone involved in the second crime? Such as picking the pocket of the murderer?

The officers who questioned him knew about the other crime, correct? Yope to yesish. Did the petty criminal witness the big crime? No. Witness something leading up to it? No. Or the aftermath? Yesish. Or something related to it? Yes. Did he commit a crime against anyone involved in the second crime? Yope--I would call it essentially a victim-less crime, but in the sense that there is a victim, yes. Such as picking the pocket of the murderer? Not this.

Did Patrick know about the murder? Tell the cops about it? Did he confess the crime In order to get them to listen to him? Because he had to confess in order to give them the relevant information? Is the murder weapon relevant? The dead body? Blood? Disposing of or destroying evidence?

Did Patrick know about the murder because he was somewhere he wasn't technically supposed to be? Was he trespassing (perhaps taking a shortcut)?

I suspect LemonCurry may be onto something here...

Is the profession of the murder victim relevant? Or a hobby of hers? Her relation to her murderer?

Had Pat ever communicated with the murder victim before?

Is the minor crime something that anyone can commit? Something that can be committed anywhere?
Was it possible for Patrick to inform about murder and not revealing his crime? Did Patrick get a material evidence of murder during his crime? Did Patrick find the body? Did Patrick know who the murderer was?
