2016 - What a year!

(I've been out of pocket for a while, due to real life, and also due to lack of inspiration. Am determined to be more lateral in 2017.

o hai, our Soli-kitteh!

2016, the year which has just passed on the Gregorian calendar?

"What a year!" - is this said by you? by someone else? H/A/M? H/A/F? Is it said in a tone of joy? sadness? anger? disgust? fear? (do you see what I did there?)

all the celebrity deaths relevant?

the American political fiasco? the British one?

Is it relevant that you left your username out of the puzzle title? :) No, just carelessness and/or lack of practice.

2016 = what a year for you personally? Yessish did you have some sort of milestone?Yessish new personal addition to your life? Yessish. did you win a lottery? Ha! If only!
Grip has caught on. 2016 has been a surprising year, partly for the election, partly for something that (sort of) happened to me, and partly for another reason. It shouldn't take too long to work out what those reasons are.

Did you become a step-something?

Did the merging of families result in something that involved the election? Like an awkward conversation?

Does the third reason have to do with your job? Are the reasons all related somehow?

Did you become a step-something? Yes, a step-grandparent, which happened...how?

Did the merging of families result in something that involved the election? Like an awkward conversation? No and no.

Does the third reason have to do with your job? No. Are the reasons all related somehow? No. All 3 events are completely non-related.

Welcome to these august halls, Trebor!

Do you have a son or daughter who married someone who had child(ren) from a previous marriage? Yes! Our son, the confirmed bachelor, got married on the last day of the year, and we acquired a couple of grown (or nearly so) step-grandchildren.

That makes two surprises in 2016: the election, the marriage, and a third one, which is....
You should be able to discover it with a few well-directed questions.

*******************SPOILER*************************
I'm a fan of the underdog, and the Cubs couldn't have been more under, not having won the World Series in 108 years!
Recap: Turmp was elected, the Cubs won, and my son got married, giving us pre-fabricated (step)-grandsons. 2016 has been quite a year!
