[Westing1992] Empire State of Mind

Postby Westing1992 » Mon Jan 16, 2017 7:12 pm

My mother wanted to go to New York.
Subsequently, she got mad at my father when we had to go to New York.
That's because we wanted to go somewhere that was NOT New York.

Do all 'New Yorks' invoked refer to the same New York? Is it the city? The state?

First we: You, your mother and your father?
Second we: You, your mother and your father? Only you and your father? Does your mother still want to go to NY and you and your father don't?

When your mother wanted to go to NY, did she want you and your father to come with her? Is that the source of her annoyance in the second sentence?

Does anyone involved go to NY between the first and second sentences? Do the events described in all three sentences happen before anyone has relevantly gone anywhere?

Did 'we' want to go to a specific place that wasn't NY? Just anywhere that wasn't NY?

Do all 'New Yorks' invoked refer to the same New York? Yes. Is it the city? The state? In this case, it could refer to both.

First we: You, your mother and your father? Yes.
Second we: You, your mother and your father? Yes. Only you and your father? Does your mother still want to go to NY and you and your father don't? No.

When your mother wanted to go to NY, did she want you and your father to come with her? Yes. Is that the source of her annoyance in the second sentence? No.

Does anyone involved go to NY between the first and second sentences? No. Do the events described in all three sentences happen before anyone has relevantly gone anywhere? No.

Did 'we' want to go to a specific place that wasn't NY? Yes. Just anywhere that wasn't NY?

Is weather relevant? was it winter time and your family wanted to go someplace warmer like Hawaii or my beloved Florida?

"Had to go to NY" - for business reasons? job transfer? to catch a Broadway show that was closing soon?

Is weather relevant? No. was it winter time and your family wanted to go someplace warmer like Hawaii or my beloved Florida? The climate of our desired destination is irrelevant (though we DID go someplace warmer!)

"Had to go to NY" - for business reasons? job transfer? to catch a Broadway show that was closing soon? None of these.

Is the final destination relevant?

Were you travelling by plane? train? bus?

Was the layover unusually short? unusually long?

Is the final destination relevant? The exact location is unimportant, but some would work better than others.

Were you travelling by plane? train? bus? None of these.

Was the layover unusually short? unusually long? Neither.

Did you have the midstop because of some necessity like needing something? or was it simply that NYC was in your travel path?

Road closures relevant? Queues? Accidents? Detours? No to all. Did you make a mistake? Me personally? No. Someone in our group? YES! Did someone else make a mistake? Relevant how you planned your route? Yes, in a way. Did you deviate from the planned route? Initially? No. Eventually? Yes. GPS navigation relevant? Maps? Outdated information? None of these. Wrong information? Yes (that could have been avoided).

Did the cruise ship have to make a unscheduled stop in NY? is this related to the cruise ship incident of a few years back when one was stranded in the ocean for a while?

Did the cruise ship have to make a unscheduled stop in NY? Very much NO. is this related to the cruise ship incident of a few years back when one was stranded in the ocean for a while? No; this was January 2017.

Was the cruise your father's idea? Irrelevant.

Were all family members aware of the destination of the journey? Of the route? Of the cruise as a part of the route? Of the fact that it stops in NY?
Was the visit in NY a surprise? Did your mother want to go to NY for a purpose that was not possible to achieve during a cruise stop? Did the cruise stop have unpleasant consequences to your mother?

Two places with similar or identical names relevant? Not quite. Indicating places by some means other than the name? [/b]No.[/b] Maps relevant? No.

What actually happened is more important than how it happened, though.

So you guys plan a cruise?
And your dad thinks the stop is somewhere else?
And that is how the journey starts?
Only later it is discovered that the departure point is NY?
Which is more out of the way than the other location?
or at least it is by the time it is realized?
Did you end up going all the way to the incorrect location?
And because of this mistake, your mom is annoyed at your dad?

Hobbsicle: that's basically it!

***SPOILER***
Back in January, my family went on a cruise. My father thought the boarding point was in New Jersey, at a pier they had gotten on a cruise before. However, when we got there, we discovered the point was actually in New York, a half-hour away! This, of course, made my mother quite cross. Luckily, we were able to get there with plenty of time and enjoy a nice two-week cruise in the Caribbean.
