[Hobbsicle] Round Here, Mr. Jones

Postby Hobbsicle » Fri Apr 21, 2017 4:28 am

A wealthy landowner is trying to get rid of a crow nesting in a watchtower on his land. He takes his rifle to try to shoot the crow, but every time he enters or even nears the tower, the crow flies away into the nearby forest, where it will stay until the man leaves again, at which point it will fly back to the nest. The man comes up with a clever solution to kill the crow, but the crow surprises the man by having a skill the man did not expect, thus outwitting the man. The man's persistence pays off, however, and he finds a definite limit to the crow's skill, and he ultimately is able to shoot it. What skill does the crow possess, and what was the man's solution?

True or believed to be true. Message me if you've heard of it.

A skill unique to the that particular crow? A skill which relies on the crow's intelligence? Relevant how the man originally intended to kill the crow? Are both methods of killing the crow practically the same or very similar?

Did the man's first solution involve the forest? The second solution?
Did the man finally shoot the crow with the rifle? Did he adapt the rifle in any way? With a scope?

One other person? 2? 3? Do these people stand in different locations to help kill the crow (e.g. one goes to watch tower, crow flies away, then is caught in forest)?

WAG based on the title... is the relevant skill the ability to count? (for those who don't get this, "Mr. Jones" is a song by the band Counting Crows)

Does the crow actually observe the landowner approaching? hear the landowner moving? observe some indirect consequence of the landowner's presence? Does the solution involve the man disguising himself somehow?

"Round Here" is also a song by Counting Crows
Does the man first try with one person? Then subsequently adds another person to each attempt?

Are the people standing still during the attempts to shoot the crow? Are they moving around? Are they in the same spot as one another?

As more attempts are made, do they each change their location? Does the crow count by recognising faces? So if a face isn't seen before it doesn't count it?
