(Grip) Show Me The You Know What (SHOWN)

Postby Grip » Sat May 06, 2017 8:49 pm

The man would rather win $500 twice on two games rather than $1,000 on just one. Why?

Twice on two games total? Or twice on each game (which would total $2,000)?

Would he win the money by playing the games? By betting on them?
Are the two games the same type of game?
Is the man committing a crime?

Does the money come from his opponents? Are the games one on one? Is this money he has previously lost?

Is the reason for his preference simply that he would prefer to win two games as opposed to one (for the feeling of victory, bragging rights, etc.)? Does he enjoy the games that are "worth" $500 more than the ones that are worth $1000?

Are the games contests of some kind (i.e., participants don't directly interact with each other--they each do something individually and then someone else determines who did it best)? games of skill? of luck? a combination?

Any superstitions regarding luck relevant? Regarding anything else? Can he chose if he's more likely to get 2x500 or 1000? Or is this also due to luck only?

Is the amount of money he pays to enter these games relevant? Would he pay less for two scratch tickets that could win him the $500 each than he would pay for the one that could win him $1000? Are non-grand prizes (secondary prize amounts that aren't the highest payout possible) relevant? Does he have a better chance at making back his entry cost on the $500-prize tickets than on the $1000-prize one?

Are high prizes paid out differently from lower ones? Taxed differently? Does he want the money for something specific? Do all winners of more than $500 get some relevant form of publicity?

With a 500 prize, can he go pick up the money at a convenient location? Does he mail in for it?

With a 1k prize, does he have to mail in for it? Does he have to pick it up in an inconvenient location? Does he have to fill out other forms? Or have certain identification?

***** SPOILER *****

If the man wins $500 dollars on two separate Florida Lottery scratch off cards, he can take each card to a different lottery affiliated supermarket and immediately receive 500 bucks at each. (Convenience stores don't usually have that much cash in the register so he can't redeem such a large prize at any of those.)

However, the limit to how much a retailer can redeem is $600, so if he wins $1,000 he has to go to one of the regional lottery offices to get it. The nearest office to him is several hours away and he would have to take a day off work, spend money for gas, etc. Hence, he would rather win $500 dollars separately on two cards instead of $1,000 all on one card.

Thanks to all, and to Hobbsicle for finishing it off.
