He=H?A?M?

Was it illegal? Did he regret it because it was illegal? Immoral? Did it result in someone's death? Did it result in someone getting injured? Did it result in him getting injured?

regretted because it took disadvantages to him? to others? directly?indirectly? did he regret soon after? After days?Hours?Minutes?Months?Weeks?...

it sounds like a good idea...did he decide to undertake the action? If so, did he decided it because he expected to gain more money? to save time? to win a game? to win a competition? to win something? To make someone happy? To make amends? To entertain himself? His friends? To make someone fall in love with him? To save his life to death? To save someone? To make someone not suffer? Was him alone? Was he driving while taking this decision? Was he working? Typing on his PC? Playing some sport? Was him in his house? In a public place? Is electronic involved? Is music involved?
Is "it" referred to: an action he could undertake? An action he could avoid to undertake? an item he could buy?A place where he could go? A surprise he could make to someone (like a party or something else)? A present he could make to someone? Something like taking a pet and bring to someone?

Has he seen a relevant advertisement that convinced that "it" was a good idea? That attract him? Or did he simply convinced himself basing on the immediate advantages that the action could bring him? Was he trying to solve a particular issue/situation? A familiar one? An issue related to his job?

Is it in modern times? Before? WWI?WWII?Before? If so, is the action undertaken by him considered illegal also nowadays? Are borders across countries relevant? Different laws in different countries?
Is the illegality of the action concerned to immorality?Danger? Religion/culture of a country (e.g. arabic countries where alcohol is forbidden)? Does the act involve slavery of some kind? drugs? gambling? money laundering? pirate downloading? Providing an illegal service? Purchasing an illegal product? Robbery (if so, did he rob the wrong item?)? Fraud? Smuggling (e.g. of artworks)?

Did he do it alone? With others? Are cameras involved?Did he forgot something on the crime scene?

So he undertook an illegal action to be richer right? Did he regret it because he was discovered? Because it damaged him? Someone else? Because it damaged someone financially? Is it something like he illegally acquired a certain item and then that type of item lost value? Did he he illegally introduce a certain product in a country? Embargo relevant? Buy a product which was considered illegal in that country? Did he pay for his actions? Relevant?

Did he intend to do more money by selling something? "Exporting" something? Allowing someone to do something? e.g to sell a product, to go somewhere,to purchase a product? Saving money in purchasing something? If so is the action considered illegal because it violated some safety rule?

Identity theft not relevant. Good guess...

There's a big FA lurking in almost all guesses so far.

"it sounded (to X) more and more like a good idea, until he regretted it."
To be sure: first it=second it? X=he?

"regretted because it took disadvantages to him? took advantage"
Do you mean that he regretted it because it gave him a disadvantage? Or because it gave him an advantage?
Asking because "took advantage of" usually means "brought disadvantage to".

"did he decide to undertake the action? YES"
"Was it illegal? YES"
Does the "it" in the second question refer to the "action" in the first question?

Correct

"regretted because it took disadvantages to him? took advantage"
Do you mean that he regretted it because it gave him a disadvantage? Or because it gave him an advantage?
Asking because "took advantage of" usually means "brought disadvantage to".

You can definitely say that he was taken advantages of.

"did he decide to undertake the action? YES"
"Was it illegal? YES"
Does the "it" in the second question refer to the "action" in the first question?

Something illegal was undertaken, but what he (the person in the question) did, was not illegal. FA cleared.

Was the illegal undertaking done intentionally? Unintentionally? By him? By someone else? As a direct result of the man's action?
