[WiZ] Calvin and hobbies

Postby WiZ » Wed Sep 06, 2017 12:20 am

Calvin undertakes a new hobby. He soon finds himself spending much more money than he intends on it, and it becomes an obsession. Eventually, an expensive piece of related equipment breaks, and he gives up on the hobby in disgust. He sells what equipment remains at a loss. He feels he has not learned much or developed as a person in the course of his hobby. However, he nonetheless considers himself substantially better-off for the experience. Why?

Love the puzzle title

Is the hobby one that can be done inside ? Is it sporting in nature? Does it require a lot of skill? energy?

Do we need to establish how the piece of equipment broke? Is it relevant what he does with it?

Better off financially? in terms of personal development? has he avoided something bad happening to him?

Is Calvin's occupation relevant? family? Location?

was it an "expensive hobby" like golf? Did the hobby involve risk? Danger? Agility? Relevant the circumstances under which the piece of equipment broke? Was it Calvin's fault? Relevant which was the piece of equipment broken?

Was C able to continue practicing the hobby even without the piece of equipment broken or would he be forced to buy a new one in order to continue?

better-off = would he be better-off had not the piece of equipment broken? Had not stopped the hobby? Had he not an obsession for the hobby?

Peter

Love the puzzle title It's what I misread the series title as, at first

Is the hobby one that can be done inside ? It *can* be done inside Is it sporting in nature? no Does it require a lot of skill? no energy? no

Do we need to establish how the piece of equipment broke? no Is it relevant what he does with it? In order to cause it to break? No

Better off financially? yes, although this is a subsidiary point in terms of personal development? yes, to a greater extent has he avoided something bad happening to him? quite probably yes

Is Calvin's occupation relevant? family? Location? no to all

Earnest

was it an "expensive hobby" like golf? Not to the same extent Did the hobby involve risk? yes Danger? yes Agility? no Relevant the circumstances under which the piece of equipment broke? no Was it Calvin's fault? irrelevant Relevant which was the piece of equipment broken? yes, for context

Was C able to continue practicing the hobby even without the piece of equipment broken yes or would he be forced to buy a new one in order to continue? no

better-off = would he be better-off had not the piece of equipment broken? Had not stopped the hobby? Had he not an obsession for the hobby? this

Gambling involved? Equipment like books? Cards involved? Hunting? Does it involve weapons?
Risk and danger are present in that there is the possibility to be injured? To lose money? To die? Can it be classified as a table game? Is collectionism involved?

Is it mainly practiced outside? If so, is it known with two different names when practiced outsjde and inside E.g. hunting when practiced outside, shooting when inside (not a good example sorry).

Does the way in which he is better off involve other people? Is he held in greater esteem? Does he have a new label or title?

To clarify an earlier question: He would have been substantially better off even if he had never become obsessed in the first place? Would he have been better off in the same way if he'd never had the hobby?
But he would not be better off if he'd had the hobby, become obsessed, and not quit, correct?

This isn't it. And it took me a second to realise you were referring to a rifle range, rather than a school shooting when you were talking about 'inside' :P

Hi!

Does the way in which he is better off involve other people? Not directly Is he held in greater esteem? not relevantly Does he have a new label or title? no

To clarify an earlier question: He would have been substantially better off even if he had never become obsessed in the first place? No - the obsession, at the very least, set the wheels in motion Would he have been better off in the same way if he'd never had the hobby? no!
But he would not be better off if he'd had the hobby, become obsessed, and not quit, correct?

I don't want to tip my hand too much, but the scale is as follows (from worst-off to best-off): Never started hobby > Started and didn't ragequit > Started and ragequit (status quo)

This isn't it. And it took me a second to realise you were referring to a rifle range, rather than a school shooting when you were talking about 'inside' --> my apologies not an expert of weapons and rifle ranges xD

So...is an hobby in which you can't get injured but you can die and weapons are not involved? Die in a figurative sense (like in a game) or literally and physically die? Is the risk of die connected to height? And collectionism is related to objects that can be collected each time the hobby is practiced with the risk of die? (That is you need to search items, admitted that items are collected, with the risk of die?)

Are animals involved in the hobby? Did C practice it every week? Every day? Once a month? More than once a month? Relevant?

Does Calvin undertake physical exercise as part of this hobby? Is that the entirety of the hobby? Is he a cyclist? Runner? Hiker?

my apologies not an expert of weapons and rifle ranges xD No worries. It's strange what the brain associates certain words with.

So...is an hobby in which you can't get injured but you can die and weapons are not involved? Correct. Well, as with almost anything, injuries can occur, but they're rare and unexpected Die in a figurative sense (like in a game) or literally and physically die? this Is the risk of die connected to height? no And collectionism is related to objects that can be collected each time the hobby is practiced yes with the risk of die? (That is you need to search items, admitted that items are collected, with the risk of die?) The 'collection' aspect of the hobby isn't what gives rise to the risk of death

Are animals involved in the hobby? not any more Did C practice it every week? Every day? this Once a month? More than once a month? Relevant? Mostly for context

Balin

Does Calvin undertake physical exercise as part of this hobby? no Is that the entirety of the hobby? Is he a cyclist? Runner? Hiker? n/a to all

Are animals involved in the hobby? not any more-->were them substituted by cars? Other vehicles? By the relevant electronic item?

Is the risk of dying remote? Is the risk of dying connected to: speed? Did many people die in practising that hobby? Is the aim to collect the greatest number of a certain item?

Is there a loser or a winner? Is it usually made in team? Alone? Also nowadays?

Is it possible to practice it in a city? In countryside? Is it necessary a sourelce of water (ocean/river...) to practice it? A mountain? Is high speed a determinant factor?

Electronic = GPS? Metal detector? Phone? Device? Cameras? Lights?

Is one completely immersed in water when performing this hobby? Partially immersed? Is one in water at all? Is one on top of water? Like in a boat? Or skating? Is drinking the water relevant? Is this a common hobby? Is it the kind of hobby that might appear slightly stupid to most people who don't participate in it? (Like playing Chubby Bunny, or seeing who can drink the most amount of water in a given time frame?) Is the source of water a pool? Is it the electronics mixing with the water that makes this hobby dangerous?

Is the hobby considered an extreme activity? Such as scuba diving or BASE jumping or GalFisking... I mean skydiving? (Unlikely given the water necessity, but you never know. I did suggest chargeable toilet paper once.)

Does he consider himself to be better off because he was successful in using the e-cigarettes to quit smoking? Does he find he doesn't need to smoke anymore?

Does he consider himself to be better off because he was successful in using the e-cigarettes to quit smoking? Does he find he doesn't need to smoke anymore?

***** SPOILER *****

Calvin switched from smoking cigarettes to vaping. He got caught up in the collector's culture associated with e-cigarettes, travelling around buying rarer flavours and limited edition equipment. Eventually, a pipe he had been assembling broke, bringing months of effort and expenditure to nothing. He gave up the hobby in disgust. He quickly learned that he had been on e-cigarettes for so long, he was no longer addicted to nicotine, and his health improved from that day onward.

Congratulations, Trebor, on the solve, Acridian for a key question, and thank you everyone else for playing.

Clever. I was about, oh, five hundred miles away from that answer.
Which is especially embarrassing because I mentioned my "chargeable toilet paper" comment, which I'd originally made on a puzzle of yours that also involved e-cigarettes. Will I ever learn?
