Sign: street sign? Sign on a building? Of a business? Roadside sign? Billboard?
Is the sign a physical sign? A sign in sign language? Another hand signal or non-verbal signal? A sign of the zodiac?
Exonerate: of a crime? Which he had been convicted of? Was charged with?
Him = H/A/M?

Did the signer intend to use the item? Was the item not available? Broken somehow? Does the sign show: an emotion? An instruction? A confirmation? An answer to a question?

Ok maybe I've confused you a bit...so...let's say the sign is a writing otherwise the puzzle would be too long...writings are often done with pens but there is no need for a man to use a pen because the writing was printed...so you need to figure out why the writing exonerated the man and in which sense...
