Noah = HAM and Mary = HAF? Periods = monthly cycle? Are Noah and Mary man and wife/boyfriend and girlfriend? Cheating = having sex with someone else?
Did he do this once, or multiple times? With one women or multiple women? Does Mary find out in the end?

OR, is Noah cheating WITH Mary?

Was it a music theory exam? Something requiring a certain rhythm? Could he hear, see or feel Mary‘s full stops?

Was Mary relevantly writing something? Did Noah relevantly hear or see that she was writing? Did she also take the same test? Did he copy her somehow? If he had not paid attention to her regular periods, would he: not be able to cheat? Not be able to avoid discovery?

I have a feeling I saw this on an AskReddit thread also. I don't remember the exact details but I'll stay out just to be sure.

Was Mary relevantly writing something? yes Did Noah relevantly hear or see that she was writing? yes Did she also take the same test? no Did he copy her somehow? 'no' is less misleading If he had not paid attention to her regular periods, would he: not be able to cheat? not in the same way Not be able to avoid discovery? no

Did she write normal writing using the alphabet? Relevant which language? Which subject? Was it musical notation? Science or mathematical equations? Relevant what subject in the exam? Was it an exam in which you sit at a desk? Was it a driving test?

Did she write normal writing using the alphabet? yes Relevant which language? no (assume a language that uses full stops in a similar manner to English) Which subject? no Was it musical notation? no Science or mathematical equations? most likely no Relevant what subject in the exam? not really Was it an exam in which you sit at a desk? yes Was it a driving test? no

Was she writing with a pencil? On paper? With chalk on a blackboard? Marker on whiteboard? Was she the teacher? Does he see the actual writing?

Does "regular" imply that there were many sentences? That sentences were short? The same length? Is she using them as ellipses or something other than to mark the end of a sentence?

Just to check I've understood this correctly: They were sitting at desks in an exam room, near enough to each other that he could see what words she was writing? It was relevant exactly where the full stops/periods occurred? They were regular in the sense that they were evenly spaced with the same number of words in between? Or just in the sense that they came at the end of each sentence irrespective of length? Could he see the full stops as well as hear them? Was other punctuation relevant, such as commas? Is Balin's comment, "You do have precedent on your side here" relevant?

Was she writing with a pencil? no On paper? yes With chalk on a blackboard? Marker on whiteboard? no to these Was she the teacher? yes Does he see the actual writing? yes

Does "regular" imply that there were many sentences? yes That sentences were short? yes The same length? more or less Is she using them as ellipses or something other than to mark the end of a sentence? no

InvisibleMimsy

Just to check I've understood this correctly: They were sitting at desks in an exam room, near enough to each other that he could see what words she was writing? yes - we may be having some issues with tense here, however It was relevant exactly where the full stops/periods occurred? yes They were regular in the sense that they were evenly spaced with the same number of words in between? no Or just in the sense that they came at the end of each sentence irrespective of length? yes, in most cases... Could he see the full stops as well as hear them? he could only see them Was other punctuation relevant, such as commas? no

Is Balin's comment, "You do have precedent on your side here" relevant? That was my response to Balin - he and I sometimes mine the same source for puzzles, and, in this case, he's probably read the same story I have :)

So he got away with looking at what she wrote? Did she intend to keep the writing secret? Did she look around to see if anyone was peeking? If so, did she only do this after finishing a sentence? So he would look away whenever she wrote a period?

So he got away with looking at what she wrote? He was supposed to see what she had written Did she intend to keep the writing secret? no Did she look around to see if anyone was peeking? Yes (but at their neighbours, not at what she had written) If so, did she only do this after finishing a sentence? no So he would look away whenever she wrote a period? no

It was an intentional play on words, anticipating how the phrase 'Mary's regular periods' would be interpreted. But that was quite quickly laid to rest by the initial rounds of questioning. My puzzle titles usually don't hint at the solution.

Did he see something he was not supposed to see? If so: text? Check marks? Movement? Did she relevantly pause while writing?

Remember, he paid close attention to what he saw. Merely seeing or noticing it would not suffice in this case.
