Is invisibility = not able to be seen using the eyes? Is Bambu's name relevant? Is it a fictitious name? "Performer" = does he perform something? Relevant? Something funny? Is the hilarity caused by the performance of Bambu? Is it something like someone who was faking not to see Bambu and Bambu making fun of him?

Were the audience just pretending not to see him? And one person didn't want to play along with this? Did he intend to do something funny?

Is Bambu making gestures on a stage making fun of the words said by something else? Are we talking about something going on on a theatre? On tv? (E.g. news and Bambu is the translator for deaf people?) Is Bambu doing his job? Is Bambu an actor? Did Bambu voluntarily create hilarity? Was him acting the role of a plant?

At Kaylee's request, here is the story so far:-

***RECAP***

It's relevant what Bambu, who is a human actor, performs.
He's actually not invisible to anyone, but his "non-presence" causes hilarity.
No one can hear him, either.
Bambu's name is not important, but it is suggestive.
Everyone in the audience is pretending they can't see him.
He is making gestures on and off stage. He makes fun of something someone else says. It's not a theatre, but something like it.

Is he a puppeteer?

If you hadn't said "it's not a theatre" I would have guessed he was acting in Avenue Q...

Is it usual in such performances to pretend not to see someone who is making hilarity? Is there someone else a part from Bambu performing? If so was the someone able to see Bambu? If so is he/she pretending not to see him as well? If not is it something like Bambu is making fun of someone making a video/phone call/skype call?

Was Bambu performing in a commedy? In a movie? Was Bambu mimiking (hope it is clear) sonething the otger is saying/singing? Was he perfoming the same gestures on and off the stage? Did he interact physically with the public? Is the other the narrator of a story?

Is Bambu supposed to be part of the act in which he is participating? Is it his job to pull focus from the other performers? Does the audience say anything to Bambu or the others?

Does he make fun of the other act(s) in the circus with him? Is anything projected onto him? Do we need to figure out this exact schtick?

When the other acts pretend they can’t see them do they act as if he’s there? As if they’re trying to see him but can’t?

There's really only one thing left to work out - who/what his character/role is. If you could work out what he's holding that might be helpful and/or a bonus.

Is his character playing pranks on others? Is his character a human? Other humanoid character? Animal or other nonhumanoid creature? Some kind of inanimate object? If yes, one that still has some kind of "movement" (tree waving in wind, ect.) An abstract concept?

Well, his whole performance both is and is not a kind of illusion... but no magic tricks or illusions in the magic sense Is the prop made from anything apart from metal and wood? Is it held? Worn like a wristband? Is it a shield?

Is the prop painted? Is it a hoop? Is the hole for sticking one's hand or arm through? Body? Is the hole bigger than his head? Relevant?

CLUE: It would also work if this object were shaped like a small stick.

Is it similar to the episode in South Park where Cartman thinks he is invisible, but isn't? So he goes round playing pranks as if no one can see him? But it's funny because they can?
Is the actor pretending to be a wizard/magician/the invisible girl from the Incredibles?

Is the actor pretending to be a wizard/magician/the invisible girl from the Incredibles? And like this too.

*****************************$POILER*****************************
Bambu is a performing ninja in a circus. He is dressed completely in a white bodysuit, with only a slit for his eyes. His act is based on his being completely invisible to everyone, performers and audience alike. We can only tell where he is because he shakes a circle of little bells on one hand. The narrator starts us off by telling us that we will not see Bambu, but if we are quiet, we will be able to hear him. As well as his act, which is very funny, Bambu also disrupts other performers' acts by joining the audience and creating mayhem. We are all complicit in his invisibility.

Thanks for everyone for playing and to jumpingjacks for the answer!
