[peter365] Tall Dark and Ransom

Postby peter365 » Mon May 28, 2018 10:38 am

Hi there spoiler seekers, a rare offering and no doubt a quickie.

A doctor whose son-in-law has been kidnapped is puzzled when he is presented with a demand to 'cure our Sean of his nervous disorder'.

What's going on?

Is Sean HAM? HCM? Is Sean the doctor's son-in-law? Is the doctor a doctor of medicine? Nervous disorder...anxiety? Depression? Something else psychological? Neurological? Such as motor neurone disease? Is Sean's disorder relevant? Does he actually have a disorder? If so, is the disorder actually curable?

Is Sean HAM? HCM? Could be either Is Sean the doctor's son-in-law? No Is the doctor a doctor of medicine? Yes Nervous disorder...anxiety? Depression? Assume this Something else psychological? Neurological? Such as motor neurone disease? Is Sean's disorder relevant? Not overly Does he actually have a disorder? I'm sure he does If so, is the disorder actually curable? I'd guess treatable is a better way to describe it

Is the demand maker the same person (group of people?) to kidnap his son-in-law? Is the doctor confused because the kidnapper is not asking for money? Confused because the kidnapper went to extreme lengths to get Sean the treatment?

Is the son-in-law still kidnapped when the demand is made? Is the demand in any way linked to the kidnapping? Is the kidnapping publicized? Is there a relevant ransom? If so, is it paid? Is it made before the demand?

Is the kidnapper asking for something related to Sean or his treatment? Relevant that he kidnapped his son-in-law and not another family member? Is Sean in any way related to the doctor? The kidnapper? The son-in-law? Is it Sean's family who made the demand to cure Sean? Did they take advantage of the doctor being on television?

Is the exact wording of the demand relevant?
Is the doctor's gender relevant? If so, is the doctor a man? A woman?
Does the doctor typically treat disorders of the type Sean has?

Is the exact wording of the demand relevant? Yes , and to be fair the Doctor thought it was the demand but there's a better word to describe it.
Is the doctor's gender relevant? If so, is the doctor a man? A woman? He's a man but not really relevant
Does the doctor typically treat disorders of the type Sean has? Not relevantly.

There's a bit of a False Assumption going on mainly due to my poor wording of the puzzle statement. The doctor would have been very puzzled to read the 'demand' . He was expecting something along the lines of 'leave 1 million pounds at a particular location . So why did he get this strange request instead? There's a particular aspect of the message that's very relevant

Better word: "request"?
Was the demand/request/thing intended for the doctor?

Better word: "request"? Yes that would work better, not perfect but pretty close
Was the demand/request/thing intended for the doctor? No , he was expecting a demand and got this instead .

Was the request sent to the wrong person? If so, was it the fault of the sender? Messenger? Recipient? Does he have a similar name to another person?

Did Sean have nervous disorder before the kidnap? If not, is the kidnap a cause of the nervous disorder?
Is the doctor's son-in-law still alive? if not, was he murdered?
Does the demand include a promise that if Sean is treated, the son-in-law would be released?
Are Sean's family who are asking the demand, really the kidnapper?

Was Sean the kidnapper?

Did someone switch the kidnapper's demand with the request to help Sean?

Does it have anything to do with Fundraising? A charity campaign? Crowdsourcing? Did the doctor not have enough money to pay the ransom and someone offered him opportunities to earn more to make the ransom money? So treating Sean would help him get closer to that funding goal?

No to these Did the doctor not have enough money to pay the ransom and someone offered him opportunities to earn more to make the ransom money? Nice thought but very much on the wrong track So treating Sean would help him get closer to that funding goal? No.

Time for a hint I think

The key fact that you have established so far is that the demand/request was not sent by anyone , so it must have been......

Was the demand done in a phone call? Was the doctor expecting a call from the kidnappers but got instead a call from some normal patients?

was Sean the deliverer of the demand? No and the key point is that the demand was not delivered, it was collected. if so, knowingly? was Sean really affected by the ailment as claimed? Sean has absolutely nothing to do with the kidnapping. He could be dead for all we know .

So the ransom was unknown before the treat-Sean request, but known after.

Did the treat-Sean request cause the ransom to be known? If so, directly? indirectly?

So the ransom was unknown before the treat-Sean request, but known after. Correct

Did the treat-Sean request cause the ransom to be known? If so, directly? indirectly? No if anything it had a delaying effect.

Some key facts that might help things. Consider the format the request was made in , also there had been contact with the kidnappers before the Sean request. The request was collected not delivered.
