If James hadn't pointed, would Henry not have smiled? Did he smile because something was successful? Because of something he saw? Heard? Felt? Knew? Because he had inhaled laughing gas? Did the smile signify happiness? Satisfaction? Revenge? Schadenfreude? A memory?
Did James point a tube? Arrow? Projectile? Noisemaker? Stick? Weapon? Firework? Finger? Rocket? Spacecraft? Transmitter? Receiver? Telescope? Was it daytime? Dawn? Dusk? Nighttime? Relevant?

Did James point with a part of his body? Is he pointing at a particular object? Or just the sky in general? Relevant where this puzzle takes place? Relevant when? Are James and Henry working together on something? An experiment? Is this a real event which happened?

Was there some kind of experiment or test?
Had either or both of them constructed or invented something?
Did they know each other? Were they brothers, friends, something else?

Relevant where this puzzle takes place? Relevant when? No and no, let's say Northeast USA in the first half of the 20th century.

Are James and Henry working together on something? Yes. An experiment? Yes. Is this a real event which happened? Yope.

This is basically all the way there... the premise of the riddle is not one that I made up, so I'm wondering if this story sounds familiar to anyone?
