H1: human hand? Animal hand? Robot hand? Prosthetic hand? A hand of cards?
Same Q's for H2.
Stolen1=stolen2=stolen3?
Stolen: taken without consent? Taken following the rules of a game? Taken by a human? An animal? Presumed stolen but actually lost some other way?

A hand in marriage?
The hand of a clock?

Two men are in love with the same woman, but Man1 is engaged to her. It is the night before the wedding, and they are having a drink and playing poker at Man1's house. While the cards are being dealt, Man1 leaves to go to the bathroom, and Man2 peeks at his opponent's hand and swaps the cards (H1). With this disadvantage, Man1 loses and frustrated, her heads off to bed. While he's asleep, Man2 steals the hour hand from Man1's alarm clock (H2), causing him to oversleep and miss his own wedding. Humiliated, the bride-to-be leaves Man1 and Man2 consoles her - they fall in love and eventually get married, Man2 having stolen his Man1's "hand in marriage" (H3).

Was a human hand physically separated from the rest of the body? If so: by accident? Violence? Medical procesure? Disease? Self mutilation? Is a prosthetic hand relevant? Fake hand?

[quote="jumpingjacks"]Does someone cheat at poker? Yes, he stole a hand of poker by cheating (H1). For which he is punished by having his hand removed? And yes, his hand was chopped off by a barber-surgeon while the other card-players held him down (H2). Then....

Was the chopped-off hand stolen? Reattached? Destroyed? Thrown away? Kept? Embalmed? Buried?

So steal 1=cheating at poker, steal 2 = chopping off the hand of the cheater and making it into a trophy? Steal 3=involves the hand from steal 2? A different hand? A human hand?

So is it actually a trophy trophy like you'd give to the winner of a poker tournament or something, or is it like trophy hunting only with hands?

He had his hand removed for cheating, and then the hand was used as a trophy... not a prize trophy, more of a display.

Was the hand kept and displayed as a warning to others who might cheat? Was it kept with other hands?

in a niche in the wall.
Was it kept with other hands? No, just on its own.

Finally, what was the 3rd steal?

So somebody stole the hand from the niche in the wall, correct? Did they know what they were stealing? Was it stolen by the person it had belonged to? A friend or relative of theirs? An enemy of theirs? Did they steal something containing the hand, and ended up with the hand as well?

Did the person who stole it intend to sell it? Keep it? Dispose of it? Return it to the person it came from? Profit from it in some way other than selling it? Display it somewhere else?

I often have problems deciding when a puzzle is actually solved! I think this one is, so I'll call it. Well done Enjay, and to everyone else tho took part!

The Haunch of Venison in Salisbury is an old inn dating back to the 13th Century and was used as a hostelry and coaching house during the building of the Cathedral spire. At some point, so the story goes, a man cheated at poker to take the 'winning' hand. (First steal).

He was caught, and as such things were taken very seriously in those days, it was immediately arranged for his hand to be amputated by a barber-surgeon who happened to be in the inn at the time. (Second steal).

The hand was embalmed, and displayed clutching the "winning" hand in a niche in the inside wall of the Haunch, where it became a local curiosity and was viewed by many visitors to the city over the centuries. I myself saw the hand many times when I lived in Salisbury and frequented the local hostelries. In 2010 it was stolen by person or persons unknown (third steal), and the landlord said, "We've got a big group of school children waiting to see it who are going to be very disappointed."

Anyway, a replica was made and put in the niche. So far, hand number 4 has not been stolen!
