[WiZ] Baker's Dozen Dead

Postby WiZ » Tue Jul 24, 2018 10:52 pm

13 people lie dead after a fire in a large building in a town. None of the victims came within several hundred metres of the building, and they showed no signs of burns or smoke inhalation. How did they die?

True story. Caveat Earlispoilor.

did the fire cause the deaths, or do they share a common cause, or a pure coincidence? did they die immediately after the fire, or days/months/years later?

"13 people lie dead after a fire in a large building in a town." So if I'm parsing this correctly, that means the fire was in the large building, not the people. Were they lying dead together? In various locations around the town?

Was the building that was on fire a hospital? A warehouse? An office building? A school? A government building? A power plant? Relevant? Was the amount of damage the fire caused relevant?

Did the 13 people have something specific in common? A health condition like a pacemaker? Did they do something relevant before/during/after the fire?

Did the 13 all have the same profession? Were they firefighters? Did the fire relevantly kill or injure any others? Did the fire or damage caused by the fire prevent them from doing something?

Were they killed directly by the fire? Or did the fire cause something to 'go wrong' with the factory's products? Did the fire take place at a farm? Food packaging plant? Did they all consume something relevant?

Was it at a place where food is made? Such as a restaurant? Did the fire make the food (drink?) toxic? Like did a chemical change occur as a result of the fire? Did the food (assuming it is food) get burned?

A brewery? Pub? Bar? Type of drink relevant? If so, alcoholic? Water? Is it at a fast food place (dunno if this counts as a restaurant)? Did the 13 die from illness after drinking the offending beverage? Or did they gain any injuries somehow?

Was the alcohol somehow made stronger? Something along the lines of the heat killed/affected the yeast? Did the 13 drink more alcohol than intended/usual?

So because of a fire at a brewery, people drank a lot more than they usually would? And the reason for that is due to the change in the drink, rather than in them? Or did they themselves suffer a direct consequence of the fire?

So because of a fire at a brewery, people drank a lot more than they usually would? Yes (those thirteen did, at least) And the reason for that is due to the change in the drink the drink itself was unchanged, rather than in them? their behaviour changed Or did they themselves suffer a direct consequence of the fire? no

At a discounted price? Did they run some kind of drinking competition? Was it sold in barrels rather than bottles? Was the alcohol much more accessible?

Did the brewery have so much damage that the people literally walked in and stole it?

Did the brewery have so much damage that the people literally walked in and stole it? This is very close - there was considerable damage, and people stole the product. But they never came within several hundred metres of the brewery.

Is it relevant how the fire started? Like did a lorry carrying the beer crash into it (dunno how that would work if it was leaving the brewery but oh well), or is that OTWT? Did the beer exit the damaged building via a vehicle? Did local pubs/bars steal the beer and then sold it?

The ones who stole the product are the ones who died, right? Or was the beer passed on?

Were they aware that they were stealing the beer? Like could the alcohol have somehow got into the main water supply and poisoned them (bit far fetched but who knows)? Did the alcohol spill out at all from the brewery? When you said earlier that they died days after the fire, does that mean that they acquired the beer days later? Or didn't succumb to the effects of alcohol poisoning until days later?

Did the alcohol spill out at all from the brewery? Yes

***** SPOILER *****

The Great Whiskey Fire of Dublin killed 13 people in 1875. None perished as a result of smoke inhalation or burns. All victims died of alcohol poisoning by drinking the whiskey flowing through the streets.
