The first thing that came to mind was William tell seeing his own reflection in the shiny apple, pointing the arrow thereat, and thus saving his son. But that's probably a little too lateral.

Do the 'he' and 'his' refer to the same person? Is he a HAM? Is his son?

Was he pointed at by: A finger? A weapon (gun, arrow, sword, spear, lance...)? A laser pointer? A mouse cursor? An inanimate object?

Would the son have been killed? Died of natural causes?

Did the pointing spare the son from some sort of cull? Are they in a particularly dangerous environment?

Do the 'he' and 'his' refer to the same person? Yes Is he a HAM? Yes Is his son? HCM

Was he pointed at by: A finger? A weapon (gun, arrow, sword, spear, lance...)? A laser pointer? A mouse cursor? An inanimate object? This, no to rest

Would the son have been killed? Died of natural causes? This

Did the pointing spare the son from some sort of cull? Are they in a particularly dangerous environment? No to both

Natural causes: old age? Genetic disease? Contagious disease? Cancer? Relationship between the father and son relevant? If so, are they close? Distant? Unknown to eachother? Does a person point the object? Is the object used to determine something medical?

Natural causes: old age? Genetic disease? Contagious disease? Either type of disease could work in theory, though more likely genetic Cancer? Relationship between the father and son relevant? Not apart from that they live together If so, are they close? Distant? Unknown to eachother? Does a person point the object? Yes Is the object used to determine something medical? Not in this case, no

So he has been pointed at by an inanimate object right? Could it be that he took part of a tv show and an arrow pointed at him selecting him as the winner of a monetary prize (with which he was able to pay the cures for his son)?

Could other have been pointed at by the same object? Is the inanimate object on the hand of soneone relevantly? Was the decision to point him and not others arbitrary? Random? Taken by the someone with the inanimate object? Was him literally pointed at by the object (he was present physically when pointed at by the object) or is it something like his name was pointed at by the pen of his boss that was scrolling down a list of employees to randomly assign a bonus on the wage?
Did he see the object pointing at him? Was him pointed at with a weapon (e.g. he was in a war and he was pointed at by the enemies' weapon. He was hit by the weapon and won a Purple heart)?

Pointed at by the object = he was selected? He was chosen?

Did the fact of being pointed at by the objec give him a monetary benefit? A benefit in general? The possibility of using a relevant mean of transport? The possibility of using certain medical structures (drugs/hospitals/ambulances...)? A benefit in terms of time? Was him a doctor?

Is the boy's mother alive? Was she the one who pointed at the father? Was she present during The Pointing? (It's a lateral puzzle, has to be dramatic =P )
Do we need to find out more about the nature of the disease? Does the father have it? the mother? the son? Did he have it at any point? Was he cured?
Am I right in saying that him specifically being pointed at was not a deliberate decision? Was he playing spin the bottle, by any chance? Or some other similar game? Where it was just chance that selected him? Were there others present who also stood a chance of being pointed at?

Galfisk, you came up with the same WAG that I did. Well done to us for creative thinking, but alas not for being correct.

Did the father discover something about himself through the photo being taken? About someone else in the photo? If so, the mother? Did he see something in the photo that he wasn’t aware of when the photo was taken? Did he gain notoriety for being in the photo? For whatever happened that saved the life of his son?

Is the camera a normal, i.e. photographic camera? Or is it a security/CCTV camera? Red light camera? Toll booth camera?
TIme between The Pointing event and the time the son would have died if he weren't pointed at - seconds, hours, days, months, years?
Did The Pointing result in knowledge of the disease? Or did it result in a working treatment of a condition known by the father?
Are the father and the mother separated? Custody relevant?

Did it cause a problem during physical strain? Emotional strain? Mental strain? Relevant what kind of problem it caused? Apart from the risk of death? No What kind of heart problem it was? Did it happen on the set? At home? This could work, no to rest When watching the show?

There seems to be some confusion with regards to how relevant the son's condition is. The most relevant part is why his father being on TV prevented his son's death, it would help if that was solved first.

Did it prevent death because it was discovered earlier? Relevant how it was discovered? By whom? Relevant why the father was on TV? When? For how long? Would death be prevented if the show was recorded but never broadcast? Relevant who saw it? With the condition, would death be sudden and unexpected? Would death be likely in certain situations (such as stress, or sleep)? Would death be gradual with steadily worsening symptoms? Relevant?

Okay, we got a yope to “were [the father and mother] being interviewed?”. Was the father being interviewed? Does he have a field of expertise that is relevant here? Is he famous? Is he giving a speech?

If he’s not being interviewed, then I’m struggling g to think of what sort of show he’d be on, given other ones that we’ve ruled out.

Okay, we got a yope to “were [the father and mother] being interviewed?”. Was the father being interviewed? Yes, but not in the 'standard' sort of way i.e. news report Does he have a field of expertise that is relevant here? Yope, explore Is he famous? Is he giving a speech? No to these

If he’s not being interviewed, then I’m struggling g to think of what sort of show he’d be on, given other ones that we’ve ruled out There's still one main sort that's not been suggested yet - remember that 'reality show' is somewhat close.

HINT if you want it: The show explores an aspect of the lifestyle of the family, focusing on the father in particular.

Is the relationship between the father and the mother polygamous? Polyamorous? Is this aspect of their relationship relevant at all?

If that's not the aspect of the father's life that is focused on, is it something he does in his leisure time? Something he does to make money? Some condition, disease, etc. that he has? Something he does for fun? Something he has done? Something he was born into?

While she was being recorded? Were they all recorded on the same day? Was their involvement in this program filmed separately over many days? Are they being filmed for a documentary? A quiz show? Is the rich person helping them simply by ponying up money to produce the show?

Is the father's genealogy relevant? Is it relevant whether the father has donated blood/organs/marrow, etc. before? Is he a registered organ donor? Does the father end up donating something like this to his son? Does someone else? Does the father die in the course of this puzzle? Does anyone else?
