[Balin] I told him I already got one

A woman suffers great embarrassment because she forgot one. Why?

Woman = HAF? Can we call her Mary?
Is she embarrassed in front of one person? A few people? A large crowd? On stage? On TV?
Would this puzzle work with a man instead?
She forgot one - did she remember others of similar type? Or did she remember none? Is 'one' generic? or specific? (eg. Snow White forgetting to bring an umbrella when it's raining vs Snow White forgetting about Dopey when she talks about the "six dwarves" she lives with)

Woman = HAF? Can we call her Mary? Certainly
Is she embarrassed in front of one person? A few people? A large crowd? Most relevantly, one person On stage? No On TV? No
Would this puzzle work with a man instead? Yes, the embarrassed person's gender is not relevant
She forgot one - did she remember others of similar type? No Or did she remember none? She did not remember one at all
Is 'one' generic? or specific? (eg. Snow White forgetting to bring an umbrella when it's raining vs Snow White forgetting about Dopey when she talks about the "six dwarves" she lives with) It is a specific one

Just to clarify, when you say "Most relevantly, one person" after the question "a large crowd", do you mean that she was embarrassed in front of a large crowd, but there is one particular person present who is relevant? Or was the placement of your answer addressing my questions about her audience as a whole? I suspect the latter but wanted to check.

This one person who witnessed her embarrassment -- HAM? Are they a family member? A colleague? A friend? A lover? An acquaintance? A stranger? A customer?

Exploring the nature of the embarrassment -- was it in the category of intimate-but-harmless, eg. involving bodily functions? was it of the falling over variety? Is her physical appearance relevant? Or was she embarrassed because she felt she had been shown in a negative light? Did she believe that she came across as rude? Prejudiced? Ignorant? Selfish? Stingy? Cruel? Foolish?

The "one" that she forgot -- is this a tangible thing? Could I hold it in my hand? Does it belong to Mary?

Yes Or was the placement of your answer addressing my questions about her audience as a whole? Interesting choice of word as "crowd" versus "audience" - I'll say that she had an audience of one, but there was a large crowd around I suspect the latter but wanted to check.

This one person who witnessed her embarrassment -- HAM? H/A/F Are they a family member? A colleague? A friend? A lover? An acquaintance? A stranger? A customer? A friend

Exploring the nature of the embarrassment -- was it in the category of intimate-but-harmless, eg. involving bodily functions? No was it of the falling over variety? No Is her physical appearance relevant? No Or was she embarrassed because she felt she had been shown in a negative light? No Did she believe that she came across as rude? Prejudiced? Ignorant? Selfish? Stingy? Cruel? Foolish? Rude/cruel, possibly foolish

The "one" that she forgot -- is this a tangible thing? Yope Could I hold it in my hand? Yope Does it belong to Mary? No

Is it literally the number one? So maybe she tipped $0 instead of $10, or put on channel 42 instead of 142, and that happened to be the porn channel? Or some similar incident?

Was it on something financial? A bill? An invoice? A check? And the 1 resulted in a significantly lower amount being listed? Perhaps even $0? (Like if it were $100 and she wrote $00)?

You said she came across as rude/cruel; did it seem like her friend was a victim of this rudeness and cruelty? Or did she seem to be rude and cruel to someone else, with her friend acting as witness? A vulnerable person? A child? A homeless person?
She forgot to write the number '1', but did she write other numbers? If she had remembered it, would she have written it numerically - '1', or spelled it out as "one"? Relevant?

Was it a phone number? An email address? And then the person she gave it to either got a doo doo doo the number you have called is not a valid number or bothered some random person who was then annoyed? Or maybe it was something like a telephone sex hotline or the rejection hotline and so the caller was really mad?

Did she mentally forget to write 1 (that the 1 wasn't even in her mind when the writing happened), or is it a muscle memory thing (i.e. she was thinking about writing 1 but the hand didn't do so). I'm trying to understand under what circumstance this can reasonably happen to a normal person.

Is the strand the fact that she wrote a number down and then passed it onto someone else who would interpret the number as part of a job / service?

Does her friend witness her not-writing the '1'? How much time elapsed between her not-writing it, and the appearance of rudeness? Was it instantaneous? a few seconds? minutes? hours? days? weeks? months? When her 'rudeness' was revealed, was it also revealed to the large crowd about her? Or was the crowd merely a backdrop? an irrelevant circumstance of their being in a public place?

Is the bit that's OTRT.... that she was ordering something? That she was writing something down? That she was writing down a number and giving it to someone else? That omitting the 1 changed the number to something else?

Was she buying someone a present? Did the missing 1 lead her to buy something that she hadn't intended to ? Did it appear insensitive?

As an aside is the puzzle title a nod to Monty Python and the Holy Grail?

Was the 1 part of a larger number? If so, does the number represent an amount (like the number of items to order, or an amount of money)? Or is it just a sequence of numbers like a credit card number or a phone number? Did she order the wrong size clothing or the wrong amount of something?'

WAG that I came up with while reading another puzzle on here: Did she solve an entire sudoku puzzle except for one number one, then give the puzzle book to someone else, leading that person to think she thought they were incredibly stupid and that's why she gave them such an easy sudoku?

Does she give her friend the wrong gift? Is the gift wrapped? Relevant? Has she given anyone else gifts? Or is going to? Did she write down numbers on the wrapping paper to know whose gift was whose? Did her forgetting the '1' result in a gift mixup?
Is this a gift-exchange event? Like a secret santa? Are these public thank you gifts?

Is it her friend's birthday? wedding? baby shower? hen do? leaving party? grammy award-winning party? Some other kind of celebration where her friend is the main focus?

So she gives her friend the gift in front of everyone... and does her friend then open the gift in front of everyone? Is this when the protag gets embarrassed? when the gift is revealed? Was the '1' supposed to be written on the gift somewhere? On the gift card?

Yes, see below when the gift is revealed? Was the '1' supposed to be written on the gift somewhere? No, but... On the gift card? ...Yes.

I think it's time for a RECAP:

A woman suffers great embarrassment because she forgot one. Why?

The woman omitted the digit "1" from something she'd written on a wedding card for her friend. It wasn't until after she'd already given the card that she realized the omission, and that the omission made it appear she was being rude about the friend's wedding.

All you need now is the context of the omitted 1, and why it made her sound rude.

What did she inadvertently imply about her friend's wedding? That the love between the couple was not real? that it wouldn't last? that it was silly? a bad match? that the couple was arrogant? self-indulgent? boring?
Or was it more about the wedding ceremony itself? That it was boring? cheap? overly extravagant? tacky? that the outfits were a poor choice? that the food was terrible? that the guests were undesirable? the venue was ugly?

Hmm.... what she implied was more about her friend, that she wasn't a faithful or worthwhile bride.

Was the '1' supposed to refer to her new husband? That she had found 'the one'? Did omitting the 1 somehow make it sound like her friend was promiscuous?
Did she write something (or try to write something) fairly generic and predictable in the wedding card? "Congratulations on your happy day blablabla"? Or did she write something more personal/unique? Did she write some sort of list?

Did she want to write, "No 1" to mean "number 1"? But because she omitted the '1', the 'no' was read as 'no' instead of 'number'?
For instance, perhaps she wanted to call her friend "No. 1 wholesome bride" (weird thing to put in a wedding card, but you never know, lol), but because of the omitted '1', it now reads like her friend is "No wholesome bride"?

I am absolutely stumped!

Did she write a crossword? A connect-the-dots picture? Colour by numbers? Lol
Were the numbers related to dates? Dates relating to the relationship of the bride and groom? Age? Wedding table numbers relevant? Horoscopes?

Did she draw that erotic body parts by numbers picture like Monica from Friends? Haha

I am absolutely stumped! Hmm... remember that this was a wedding. And I'll add that what she wrote included one punctuation mark.

Did she write a crossword? A connect-the-dots picture? Colour by numbers? Lol None of these
Were the numbers related to dates? Dates relating to the relationship of the bride and groom? Age? Wedding table numbers relevant? Horoscopes? No to all

Did she draw that erotic body parts by numbers picture like Monica from Friends? Haha No, and I actually have never seen an episode of Friends (to which hearers tend to react with shock)

Did she reference a Biblical quotation? Did she want a quote about love and marriage but because of the forgotten 1, accidentally referenced a quote about promiscuity?

Did she reference a Biblical quotation? Did she want a quote about love and marriage but because of the forgotten 1, accidentally referenced a quote about promiscuity? That is indeed it.

****SPOILER****

She had intended to write the Bible reference "1 John 4:18" in the wedding card:

"There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear."

However, it wasn't until after she gave the card to her friend that she realized she'd written "John 4:18" by mistake:

"...for you have had five husbands, and the one you have now is not your husband.ā€¯

(Always proofread, compadres.)
