[WiZ] Eccentric Circles

Postby WiZ » Tue Oct 16, 2018 3:24 am

A record label distributed thousands of discs for free. The discs contained no music. What was the label up to?

Does it have anything to do with those empty cassettes or discs that claim to clean the "head" of whatever's reading the data?

So discs stored data which were not audio tracks or whatever might concern audio/sound files (music, speaking...), right? And to be sure, are we talking of "true" discs? I mean digital or analogic tools to store data? Relevant how big the disks are?Are floppy disks relevant? RAM disks? Hard drive disks? CD? LD?

Was it an advertisement campaign? Did the disc have a relevant cover? Was the disc inside something? Was the disc meant to be put in a stereo/pc/radio/device able to read it? Was the disk considered "innovative" at the time it was given to anyone by the company? Do people store the data in those disks? Has the company a relevant advantage when people store data in the disks? Did the company give the disks for free if it is bought along with something else? (E.g. a PC?...)

Some "sound of silence" "music" relevant?
Do the record label want people to record something onto the media? Redistribute these blank media? If so before or after something is recorded onto them?

So discs stored data which were not audio tracks or whatever might concern audio/sound files (music, speaking...), right? correct And to be sure, are we talking of "true" discs? I mean digital or analogic tools to store data? yes Relevant how big the disks are? no Are floppy disks relevant? yes RAM disks? Hard drive disks? CD? LD? no to rest

Was it an advertisement campaign? not per se Did the disc have a relevant cover? no Was the disc inside something? irrelevant Was the disc meant to be put in a stereo/pc/radio/device able to read it? yes Was the disk considered "innovative" at the time it was given to anyone by the company? no Do people store the data in those disks? yes Has the company a relevant advantage when people store data in the disks? I'll say yes Did the company give the disks for free if it is bought along with something else? (E.g. a PC?...) no - they distributed these by themselves at no cost to the recipient

Wolfier

Some "sound of silence" "music" relevant? No, nothing like this
Do the record label want people to record something onto the media? no Redistribute these blank media? no If so before or after something is recorded onto them? n/a

Lyrics? Chords? Any information about music? Were customers meant to store their own data to the disk? Was it a system for people to keep tabs on their record collections? Find gaps in their collections? Were they for people who bought lots of music?

Is the format relevant? Does a sort of dependency to the firm create once the disc is opened? I mean...for instance a file is shared which can only be read through a software provided by the company? Were the info generic? Related to the company? To music? Musical score? Pictures?

Is the record label relevantly a recording studio as well? Relevant which specific info was provided and how they recovered the info to be provided? Was the floppy the most economic way to store the data and share the info? Did they send it (did they send it?) to random people? Are microphones or any kind of audio quality device relevant?

Did they interview people? Did they expect the people to send them back a reply? Did they expect the people to address the firm? If so, in order to give back the floppy? To reply? To ask for something?

Can we consider the file a pdf file? A ppt? A file in a particular format? Were there words in it? Symbols? Symbols related to music? A catalogue? Were the info related to artists? Songs? Concerts? Events? Live performances? Rec in studio? Headphones? Musical instruments? Orchestra? Classes in music? Dance? Technology for music? Audio related files ? Audio waves?

Was there a bar code to be scanned in the file? Sonething to be activated by going to the firm?

Prince's Love Symbol relevant? Did they send out disks with the symbol to copy/paste (for journalists?)?

***** SPOILER *****

When Prince changed his name to a symbol, his record label had to quickly send out discs to journalists, publishers, and designers containing the font that allowed them to print the artist's name!

Well done, Doriana on the solution, well done Earnest on some excellent questions at the end, and thank you everyone for playing!
