[Doriana] puzzles zealously

Postby Doriana » Sat Dec 22, 2018 9:43 am

It's not even 11 am and you clever folks have already solved two of my puzzles, so here's another one.

For a short moment, Liv (H/A/F) thought that Sophie's remark was racist. If Sophie had made the same remark a year ago, this thought would not have occured to Liv.

FMOI, but based on a true story involving yours truly.

Is Sophie also HAF? Would it not have occurred because: the words used? What she knows about Sophie? What some actual racist said or did the past year?

Are noticeable race differences involved, e.g. facial features, accent, religion, other?
Was it to do with the wording of Sophie's remark?
Was Sophie's remark in response to something else?
Had some kind of event happened in the last year?
Was changing language involved?
Political correctness? Awareness?

Is this a true story? FYOI? FSEI?

Is it set in the present day? If no, is the century relevant? Decade?

Is the exact location relevant? Continent? Country? Do Liv and Sophie live in the same place? Were they speaking to each other face to face? On the phone? On Skype? Were they conversing at all, or was Liv, for example, hearing Sophie speak on TV? In a movie? Seeing her words written in a book/magazine? On a poster or sign?

Were they texting each other? Chatting on Facebook? Did Sophie post something on Facebook (Twitter? Some other social thing?) that Liv objected to?

so, someone thought you made a racist remark over text? But if you'd said the same thing to them a year ago they wouldn't have thought so? is it important who Liv is? A family member? friend? coworker? is how old they are important?

so, someone thought you Well, let's stick to Sophie, because that part of the story is made up made a racist remark over text? Yes (only briefly though) But if you'd said the same thing to them a year ago they wouldn't have thought so? It's important that the remark was made via text, but essentially yes is it important who Liv is? For context A family member? friend? This coworker? is how old they are important? No, but she is in her late 20s

So Liv only briefly thought Sophie made a racist comment? Did she misread something? Text abbreviations and misreading of them involved (like how our parents' generation seem to mistake LOL for "lots of love" instead of "laughing out loud")? Did Sophie use an abbreviation that looks like a racist term? Is autocorrect important? An autocorrect fail?

(As an aside, whenever I get those things on FB that says "start with this phrase, then use the middle button predictive text to make a sentence", it always ends up being about Donut and fish...I wonder why *looks at seagull*) are Sophie's texting habits relevant? Predictive text?

Have Sophie and Liv been friends a long time? Are they about the same age? I know you said exact ages weren't important, but are relative ages? A generational gap?

Interracial relationships relevant? Is Sophie dating someone of a different race than herself? Is Liv? But they weren't a year ago? And maybe she referenced her boyfriend who is black but used an emoji of a white person whereas if she did that for her white boyfriend a year ago it wouldn't be as surprising?

RECAP

Liv and Sophie are friends who are texting each other. Sophie makes a remark that includes an emoji. For a brief moment, Liv thinks that Sophie's remark was racist, but not because of the emoji's skin colour. A year ago, that thought would not have occurred to her, although the remark, including the emoji, would have looked the same.
