[Doriana] Code red

Postby Doriana » Sun Jan 06, 2019 10:35 pm

Violet (H/A/F) sits down, looks at her watch and sighs as she takes something out of her bag. "I guess it's another red day", she mutters to herself. What's going on?

Based on a true story.

Is Violet someone famous? Politician? War involved? If so, WW1? WW2? Cold War? Communism relevant? Is her watch an ordinary wristwatch? Did this happen during the 21st century? Before 2000? 1950? 1900? Earlier? In the UK? US? Europe? Asia? Is her bag a handbag? Rucksack? Is the item she takes out something that would be considered an ordinary everyday item? Is something bad occurring? Is Violet angry? Sad? Disappointed?

Is the problem one personal to Violet? Or does it affect a lot of people? Is the event a well-known one? Is the object from her bag a food item? Mirror? Makeup? Is she angry at a person? At herself? Relevant what time she checks her watch? Relevant where she is (e.g. at home, work, bus, etc.)? Will the object from her bag rectify the issue at all? Is the problem a common one that affects most people?

A well-known occurrence? Well-known situation? Does it happen regularly in general? Regularly to Violet? Does it happen in a particular country? If so, France? Germany? Ireland? Spain? Italy? Russia? Portugal? Greece? Poland? Ukraine? Sweden? Norway? Finland? Denmark? Is it just Violet who refers to it as 'a red day'? Does this refer to the literal colour of something? If so, the sky? Is 'red' used as a metaphor? To mean something negative? Does she take the literal object out of her bag? Does she relevantly use the thing? Would she still have taken it out of her bag if it wasn't 'a red day'?

Does the red refer to blood? Has Violet got a medical condition? Is she in a doctor's waiting room? Is an appointment she's waiting for overdue? WAG: Is a 'red day' a day where their are more accidents and emergencies, which results in less available medics and therefore longer waiting times? Does she take a book from her bag? A form of some kind?

Does 'red' associate with Violet personally? Is something of hers red? Will other people be angry on the same 'red day' as her? If so, all for the same reason? Is politics or government involved? Is Violet's profession relevant? If so, teacher? Lawyer? Doctor? Emergency services? Is she on her way to work? At work?

Does Violet give other days a colour e.g. is there ever a blue day? Is her commute to work relevant? Does she look at her watch to find out the time? Is there any other relevant information displayed on the watch e.g the date? is she timing something? Is the watch damaged in any way? Is it telling the correct time?

Does the 'her bag' refer to Violet's bag or someone elses?

Does Violet expect to be delayed ? does she have to change her plans? Has she missed out on something? is her profession relevant? hobbies?

When she sits down, is that on the train? Does the 'red' refer to a fine? For being late to work? Is a pink day a less severe version of a red day? Does a grey day mean that something actually positive is happening? The inverse of a red day? Does it just mean that nothing negative is happening and everything's running smoothly?

Is the train late? Diverted? Cancelled? Would others be likely to call it a red day? If she was driving a car and stuck in traffic, could that result in a red day? Changing transportation relevant? Such as changing to a bus line, and having to take the "Red" line on days she were late?

Is there anything on the train which is coloured red to represent its lateness? Such as a screen? Does she relevantly tell anyone that she's going to be late? Such as her boss? Is the thing in her bag a phone? Something to alleviate boredom? Something that involves her hobby? Such as a word puzzle (e.g. crossword)?

Is she knitting a three coloured striped scarf with red being the thickest stripe?

Edit 'Just noticed after I'd posted that Galfisk asked about stripes.

Is she knitting a three coloured striped scarf Yes with red being the thickest stripe? Not quite, see spoiler for details

Edit 'Just noticed after I'd posted that Galfisk asked about stripes.

********SPOILER********

Violet knits a "delay scarf" to visualize delays on her daily commute over the course of a year. She knits two rows every day, using grey yarn if her train is on time, pink if it's between 5 and 30 minutes late, and red if it's more than 30 minutes late.

The result can be seen here - it's actually half grey with a lot of pink, but also has a huge red chunk for 6.5 weeks of rail replacement service.

Great groundwork by android, and nice solve by Peter and GalFisk!

Almost anyone can learn to knit, and then you can make a skill scarf showing your progress!
I still have the lopsided ball I knitted in first grade. I didn't know I was supposed to turn the knitting over, so I just mirrored what I did first in order to get back to where I started.
Nice puzzle and nice scarf.

Btw, the scarf is now up for auction on ebay and the profits will be donated to Bahnhofsmission, a charity organisation that provides help to people in need - e.g. homeless people, travellers with disabilities, or children travelling alone - at train stations all over Germany.

Maybe it's like that infamous dress that people with different screens could never agree on what colors it was. But the poster of the tweet is specifying the actual colors she sees in real life.

I think the blue is the gray (very dull charcoal blue), and the light color is pink (looks whitish grayish, but has a pink hue).
