[Nimue] A surprise abot racism

Postby nimue » Sun Feb 10, 2019 6:39 pm

Some of the stories & novels in the philosophy and fiction courses I teach deal, unsurprisingly, with racism. You might think there's nothing surprising to say about racism, but, after the first such story or novel in each course, I actually get to say something that almost all students find surprising. What is it?

Are the relevant stories and novels linked by author? Are the identities of the writers relevant? By theme, other than race? Is race/racism the main theme of all these relevant works?

Is it relevant what branch of philosophy your courses fall under? Is the genre of fiction you teach relevant? Do you teach multiple genres? Is it relevant in what time period the stories and novels are written?

Does the surprise have to do with racist origins of modern phrases? Does it relate to ideology of the time the works were written?

Is a specific aspect of the perpetrators relevant? Of the victims? If so: race? Education level? Profession? Economic status? Place of birth? Childhood?

Does it have something to do with where perpetrators/victims choose to live? Self-segregation? i.e. There's more racism in the northern US due to economic factors pricing minorities out of good school districts. Facebook echo chamber relevant?

(P.S. Welcome back! Just noticed today!)

Would you be able to say this thing before going over the first story, to the same effect? Do the students need to be familiar with one of the stories first before they'll be able to be surprised?

Are the relevant perpetrators characters in the books? Are the victims? Are your students the perpetrators/victims? Are you?

Place of birth: hospital? Home? Another specific building? An area of a city? A place within the United States?
