[Admin] Penny for your Thoughts

Postby Admin » Sun Jun 23, 2019 7:45 pm

'Have you got a penny?' he asked.
'Why do you want it?' she replied.
'Because we are going on vacation.'
'Oh yes. Now I understand. Here it is.' she said.
Why did he want a penny?

Is the relationship between them relevant? If so, are they siblings? Spouses? Parent and child? Friends? Co-workers? Is one of them a cashier and the other a customer somewhere?

Is it relevant where “they” are going on vacation? Is she part of the group who is going? Is tossing coins into fountains relevant? Is the year relevant? Is he going to do anything with the penny whilst vacationing? Before? After? Will another member of the group?

Are they both HA? Are the rest of the people he’s going with HAs?

Is the penny given in order to be used? Carried? Given away? If used: as currency? A symbol? A tool? Electrical conductor? Noise maker? Fastener? For a trick? Size of a penny relevant? If so: diameter? Thickness? Metallic composition relevant? Would a dime work? A foreign coin? A coin of higher value? Lower? No value? A plastic replica? A token of the same size? A metallic washer? Destination of the vacation relevant? Duration? Cost? Have pennies relevantly been useful on earlier vacations? Superstition relevant? Tradition? Humor?

To be sure, I meant if he gave the same penny back.
Had he got a penny would he have asked to her? Would he have used without asking? Is he using the penny lot of time before leaving? As soon as he decide to go on vacation? Did she expect to go on vacation?

Insert somewhere: a scale? Are luggages relevant?

WAG --> is it for some sort of security reason (e.g. he caught the penny between a wall and a picture so that when they return if it is no more there he understood that someone has entered the apartment?

Had he used the penny just before leaving? Many hours before leaving? Many days before? As soon as they reached their destination?

Did he insert the penny in a vending machine? Is food relevant? Is sightseeing relevant? Maps?
Did they go in an exotic place? In a cold place? Relevant?
Did he inserted the penny somewhere eventually? If so did a door open after that? Were they able to go somewhere? To pass? Are shopping carts relevant (he inserted the coin to unlock it and then the penny is given back to him)? Something along these lines? Was the penny maybe converted it into tokens?

Is the fact that they were going on vacation a necessary condition to use the penny the way he did? If so because: had they not gone they would not have gone in the place where the penny was useful? They would bot have the necessity of the item/service rent/bought with the penny? Others?

Will the penny be carried on his person? Or stored in their luggage?

Am I right in saying that the penny will be used for a purpose before they depart and also while they're away? Will the penny actually travel with them? Are either party's professions relevant? Some hobby or activity they will engage in while on holiday?

Is crime prevention relevant at all? Looking after pets ? Cancelling deliveries e.g. milk or the papers? other pre-holidays tasks?

Does he use it to secure something while they're away? Or to prove that something hasn't moved?

Will the penny be laid on a surface? Put between two objects or surfaces? Put on top of something? Behind something? Under something?

Will it somehow be used to indicate if a person has been into or out of the house? A room in the house? An area of the house?

Do the people going on vacation expect the penny to be in the same place when they return? Do they expect it to move while they are away? Is it a good thing if it moves? Or if it doesn't?

Will the penny be buried? Below ground level? Somewhere above ground level but below eye level?
Will it be placed near an object that is expected to move during the time when the people are away?
If the penny moves, is it because another object also moves? Or puts force on the penny to make it move?
Will the penny potentially get wet? Hot? Cold? Discolored? Have something put on top of it?

* * * SPOILER * * *

Well done Peter,

Is the intent to measure how safe it is to eat the food in the freezer when they return? Does the penny move and tell if the food may have defrosted?

The couple live in a place where there are occasionally power cuts - sometimes long ones. They place a penny on a bowl of ice in the freezer. If the penny is still on top when they return then all is well - any power cut will have been short. If the penny is at the bottom of the bowl of ice then it means that all the food has been defrosted and is probably unsafe to eat.
