Several times over a year-long period, I pretended I had recently seen a jogger. Why?

Did you pretend by saying something? Doing something? Writing something? Did you pretend to see a person jog? See a person who was a jogger? Meet a jogger? Interact with one? Did you pretend this to a specific person? Group? Yourself? An animal? WAG: was it part of training a dog not to bark at joggers?

The jogger = someone known to you? to the other person you were pretending to?
Did you pretend to have seen the jogger in person? footprints?
Did you pretend to have seen the jogger outdoors? while you were jogging yourself?
Did the jogger serve as an excuse of sorts for you?
Did you pretend to have seen the jogger on a tv screen? in the background of a youtube clip?
Should the jogger not have been there?

Interactish: speech? Probably but not necessarily. Eye contact? Ditto. Movement? Yes. One-way interaction? Mutual? You could classify it as either one.
Recently: within seconds? Minutes? This. Hours? Days? Weeks? Months?
Did you pretend this to a group of: colleagues? Friends? This. Family? A class? A company? Strangers? A group of people doing something? Not in particular. Waiting for something? They were, sort of.

Movement = waving hands? greeting?
Was the group of people waiting for you? Was the jogger an excuse for letting them wait?
Was the group waiting outdoors? Were you outdoors when you pretendedly saw the jogger? when you pretended it to these people?

Did you meet the group online? in a video conference? No. and you were offline when you pretendedly saw the jogger? This is correct.
Did you pretend to have said something to the jogger? the jogger said something to you? Not relevantly, though some conversation might transpire. you gave something to the jogger? No. you received something from the jogger? No, but OTRTish.

So this was a bit of a running gag for you?

Was the group of friends always the same friends? Relevant? Are they just general friends of yours? Friends connected by a certain activity/hobby? Are you all neighbours?

Did you get something intangible from the jogger? Such as an excuse to tell a story? A reason to tell a joke? An excuse for something about your appearance? Did you gain a benefit from pretending all this? Did your friends? Did someone else?

Is the sideways shuffle you have to do sometimes when you meet someone on the sidewalk relevant? When you pretend-saw the jogger, were you passing through a doorway? In a structure that might be considered outside? (Like an enclosed deck, or a tent, etc.?) if you had looked up, would you have seen the sky? A roof? If you looked around you, would you see walls?

So this was a bit of a running gag for you? Oof. I don't know, I'll have to jog my memory.

Was the group of friends always the same friends? Yes. Relevant? Yes. Are they just general friends of yours? Friends connected by a certain activity/hobby? Not super relevant, but might help--it was a couple I was long-time friends with. Are you all neighbours? No.

Did you get something intangible from the jogger? I'll say yes. Such as an excuse to tell a story? A reason to tell a joke? An excuse for something about your appearance? An excuse, but not quite any of these. Did you gain a benefit from pretending all this? Not really. Did your friends? Yesish. Did someone else? No.

Is the sideways shuffle you have to do sometimes when you meet someone on the sidewalk relevant? No, but something similar. When you pretend-saw the jogger, were you passing through a doorway? Yes! In a structure that might be considered outside? (Like an enclosed deck, or a tent, etc.?) No. if you had looked up, would you have seen the sky? A roof? If you looked around you, would you see walls? Yope, see above.

Did the pretended jogger also pass through the doorway? Did you pretend that you have to give way to a jogger?
Were you walking? standing? jogging? biking? driving? when this pretendedly happened?
Did the pretended jogger give you a reason to stop moving? to wait? not to go outdoors?
Would it also work with a walker instead a jogger? a biker? a car?

Is it relevant what doorway you were going through? As in, what building you were leaving? Were you leaving your residence? Workplace? Gym/fitness centre? Jogging apparel store?

Did you use the jogger as a reason/excuse for something? Such as being late?

Did you use the jogger as a reason/excuse for something? Yes, "reason" is probably better, although it is sort of an excuse also. Such as being late? Not this.

Were you saying this to the couple in conversation? While acting? Singing a song? Was this actually a running gag (pun not intended)? Did they know you were fibbing? Was your intent to deceive? Dismay? Amuse?

Would your imaginary jogger hold the door for you? Or would you hold the door for them?
Would your imaginary jogger pass through the door at the same time (side-by-side)? ahead of you? behind you? relevant?

Only one particular door relevant?
Were you passing through a door(s) with some relevant form of security?
If so, is the type of security relevant? or potentially helpful to know? A key-operated lock? A keypad? A card reader? One-way operation (e.g. push bar or button/buzzer)? Other?

Do you legitimately have access/ right to use this door(s)? Do your friends believe you to legitimately have access/ right to use this door(s)?

Is time of use of this door relevant? time of day? before something has happened? after something has happened?
Do you arrive to the meeting point ahead of your friends? at the same time? after?
Do your friends believe you to have recently passed through this door? When you have not recently passed through this door?
Do your friends see you use the door?
Do you use the door or actually come another way?

Is this IRL? Yes. In a game?

JenBurdoo

Were you saying this to the couple in conversation? Yesish. While acting? Singing a song? Was this actually a running gag (pun not intended)? =) Not these.
Did they know you were fibbing? No. Was your intent to deceive? Technically, yes. Dismay? No. Amuse? No.

Liquizt Hey there, good to see you!

Would your imaginary jogger hold the door for you? Yes indeed. Or would you hold the door for them? No.
Would your imaginary jogger pass through the door at the same time (side-by-side)? ahead of you? behind you? relevant? I had a slightly different scenario in mind, but not really relevant.

Only one particular door relevant? Yes.
Were you passing through a door(s) with some relevant form of security? Yes!
If so, is the type of security relevant? or potentially helpful to know? A key-operated lock? A keypad? A card reader? This type of thing, possibly helpful. One-way operation (e.g. push bar or button/buzzer)? Other?

Do you legitimately have access/ right to use this door(s)? Yope. Do your friends believe you to legitimately have access/ right to use this door(s)? Noish.

Is time of use of this door relevant? Not really. time of day? before something has happened? In a sense, but might mislead. after something has happened?
Do you arrive to the meeting point ahead of your friends? No. at the same time? after? Yes, slight FA lurking.
Do your friends believe you to have recently passed through this door? Yes. When you have not recently passed through this door? No, I have.
Do your friends see you use the door? No.
Do you use the door or actually come another way? I did use the door.

I still remember Liquizt's lateral adventure, one of the first if not THE first on the LTPF (and certainly still one of my favorite).

Do you mention the jogger as an excuse as to how you got through the door? without using the intended card key?

Is there something relevant (other than the passage through the door, and the conversation with the friends later) that occurred on the days you pretended to have seen a jogger? such as forgetting your card key?

I'm thinking maybe you didn't have the card with you, but people didn't believe that because they knew you had passed through the door--so you said that after the last person had gone through, a jogger happened to come by and grab it before it locked? whereas in reality someone had propped it open with an object, or people had been opening it when they weren't supposed to? I know we've had things like this at my workplace since the pandemic, they're really trying to control who goes in which day, and so they really stress that nobody ought to let people walk around them through the door or otherwise keep the door open to circumvent swiping in with our cards.

I still remember Liquizt's lateral adventure, one of the first if not THE first on the LTPF (and certainly still one of my favorite). Yes! I think it was the first?

Do you mention the jogger as an excuse as to how you got through the door? Yep. without using the intended card key?

Is there something relevant (other than the passage through the door, and the conversation with the friends later) that occurred on the days you pretended to have seen a jogger? Somewhat. such as forgetting your card key? Not like this.

This is more or less it.

Doriana

Is the door the entrance to the apartment building your friends live in? Yes, you got the final bit. to their workplace?

Sundowner

Were you not supposed to have access to this building? not to have a card that opens this door? Correct.
Did you use your card to open the door? someone else's card? was it open anyway? Exactly.

******************************SPOILER

I was friends with a couple that lived in a well-secured (well, theoretically) apartment building. Whenever I visited, I used a pedestrian side entrance that had an ID card lock, like all the other entrances, but this one was usually propped open so that people could quickly step out when needed.

I wasn't the least bit concerned about the security risks of this practice, given that it was a gated community, a very nice neighborhood, and there were locks on all the apartment doors anyway. But I knew my friends were a bit more cautious about such things, as evidenced by their choice of residence. So if they ever expressed surprise that I got in the building without them coming down to let me in, I always said that I had just passed a jogger who was going out, and who held open the door for me. Somehow they never grew suspicious about this ever-present jogger.
