CLUE:-

As has been established, the 'cuts' are a metaphor.

You've already established that 'she would come back and haunt him' means that she would get her revenge (for SVV of 'revenge').

Think of "He killed her with 171 small cuts to her neck." as you would a cryptic crossword clue.

Did she literally die after the cuts? or metaphorically? Games relevant?

Does she get revenge after her "death"? Before? Is her dying the revenge in itself?

Is "171 small cuts to the neck" a rewording of a phrase? Does it refer at all to a physical action he took? Is "cut" in the sense of "a cut of meat" relevant? I.e., is he doing something to her/her neck with "cuts" of something else? How about "cut" in the sense of an insult?

Sorry, I poorly worded it. What I was pointing to is: did he win by scoring 171 points?
Other words already on the board relevant? the word he composed?

Other meanings of the word "neck" relevant? the expression "win by a neck"? the fact that the neck connects the head with the body? (did he somehow connect the words head and body (or similar) on the board?)

Word related to "neck": the one already on the board? the new word? both?

How many alrady existing tiles did he use for the new word: 1? 2? ...[LPTF list of numbers] :D

Did the new word contain all letters from the already existing word? Just some? In case it contains all letters: did he add the 7 tiles at the beginning? at the end? both?

Just some? In case it contains all letters: did he add the 7 tiles at the beginning? at the end? both? you can assume the single letter was somewhere in the middle of the entire word, exact letter/position irrelevant

(May I request what tiles he added? or is it irrelevant?) It's entirely relevant what letters he put down, lol! I could tell you all 7 letters but then it'd be just an anagram.
Explore "word related to neck" and "he killed her".

* for the sake of clarity, it's already established above that "come back and haunt him" means "get her revenge". She will simply get her revenge by beating him the next time they play Scrabble.

Does the 171 points include the 50-point bonus for using all seven letters? Because a triple-triple has to be divisible by nine, and 171 is but 121 isn't.

Assuming it does not, I'll try another route:
-171 divided by 9 is 19 points.
-The value of the fourth or fifth letter will be doubled (unless there was already a letter there).

Did the long word include the word "neck"?

OK, firstly I'm really sorry! I was right the first time round - the total number of points in the word was 153 (NOT 171 as I subsequently said). I'd also completely forgotten about the 50 point bonus for the Bingo (using all 7 letters). I really am a klutz.

Does the 171 points include the 50-point bonus for using all seven letters? Because a triple-triple has to be divisible by nine, and 171 is but 121 isn't.
So, 153 is divisible by 9, = 17 points for the word including the double letter.

Think about CUTS in conjunction with NECK - it's a reference to something else besides points. Not a pun, but the two words are very much linked with "He killed her".

Balin wrote:Is the word "JUGULARS"? (works with either the central U or L doubled) YES! Well done.

****************************************$POILER**********************

"He killed her with [153] small cuts to her neck.
She would come back and haunt him."

John and Mary were playing Scrabble. John managed to play all 7 letters with the word JUGULARS (17 points) across two triple word squares, hence multiplying the word score by 9 and achieving 153 points. As Balin rightly said, the score also earned a 50-point bonus (aka 'bingo') because John used up all of his 7 letters, for a total of 203 points.

Mary could not withstand 153 (203) points (cuts) being applied to her jugular; she was effectively "dead" but vowed to kill John in a revenge game at some future date.

Well done to Balin for the solution and to everyone else who took part!
