The lights of a vehicle? Car bike motorcycle lorry other?
Foresight = planning, thinking ahead, predicting, realising?

Lights: natural e.g. sun, moon, stars? Electric, oil, gas, chemical reaction, the light in someone's eyes? Theatre lights?

Lights which light up for another reason/cause, and DO illuminate something, but that is not their (main) purpose?

Are these lights on all the time, part, intermittently, hardly ever?

Does the lights' going out imply something negative for someone? Is it dangerous? Irritating?

Lights: natural e.g. sun, moon, stars? Noish. Electric, oil, gas, chemical reaction, Oil or chemical, and also-- the light in someone's eyes? --yesish. Theatre lights? No.

Lights which light up for another reason/cause, and DO illuminate something, but that is not their (main) purpose? No.

Are these lights on all the time, part, intermittently, hardly ever? Hard to answer--one was "on" for quite some time before going out, one for a much shorter time.

Twilightseeker

Does the lights' going out imply something negative for someone? Yes. Is it dangerous? Yes. Irritating? No.

Are the two lights the same kinds of lights? Is one light referencing the "light in someone's eyes", e.g their life?

Is the other light: associated with a lighthouse? A literal fire burning (based on some sort of fuel: oil, wood, coal, other?))? Did someone light this light purposefully?

Are both light lit for the same purpose? Are they lit in order to: illuminate? Singal? Warn? Provide heat? Ignition? Pilot lights relevant? Is there danger of: fire? Explosion? Poisoning? Suffocation? Crash? Death? Disaster?

Are the two lights the same kinds of lights? No. Is one light referencing the "light in someone's eyes", e.g their life? Yes, exactly.

Is the other light: associated with a lighthouse? No. A literal fire burning (based on some sort of fuel: oil, wood, coal, other?))? Yes. Likely oil, or some chemical. Did someone light this light purposefully? Yes.

Are both light lit for the same purpose? No. Are they lit in order to: illuminate? One is this. Singal? Warn? Provide heat? Ignition? No to rest. Pilot lights relevant? No.
Is there danger of: fire? Explosion? Poisoning? Yesish. Suffocation? This, good q. Crash? Death? Yes. Disaster?

So there was a lamp that burned fuel and tended to cause death by suffocation? perhaps by carbon monoxide poisoning?

Does the lamp "going out" refer to that form of lighting becoming obsolete? or to the fact that in addition to being hazardous to people, the lamps were prone to extinguishing themselves?

So there was a lamp that burned fuel and tended to cause death by suffocation? No. perhaps by carbon monoxide poisoning? I believe in this case it would be carbon dioxide.

Does the lamp "going out" refer to that form of lighting becoming obsolete? No. or to the fact that in addition to being hazardous to people, the lamps were prone to extinguishing themselves? No/FA.

Did a gas-powered light go out but the gas stay on and poison someone? No.

GalFisk

Is the other light a metaphorical light? The light of consciousness? Of life? Of love? Of hope? Faith? The light in someone's eyes? One is this, i.e. their life. The other is literal.

android18

Did the person die before oil lamp went out? No, and FA. Relevant? Not very--they happened around the same time but the light probably went out first.

Did the person die from: suffocation? This, of a sort. Poisoning? It could be termed this. Strangulation? Hypoxia? Yes. Drowning? Venom? Heat? Fire? Explosion? Electrocution? Cold? Exposure? Impact? Fall? Crash? Blunt force? Piercing force? Decapitation? Blood loss? Disease? Injury? Old age? Traffic accident? No to rest.

Was the death accidental? Yes. Murder? Suicide? Caused by negligence? Yes. Did the victim have a lack of foresight? Possibly--in the case I am thinking of, they couldn't really be expected to know. Did someone else? Yes.

Carbon monoxide poisoning? Smoke inhalation? Drop in cabin pressure? Do both 'lights' go out in the same location? If so, in a house? A plane? If not for the literal light, for the death?

Do both 'lights' go out in the same location? Yes. If so, in a house? No. A plane? No. If not for the literal light, for the death? Good questions--location is very relevant.

Does more than one person die in this situation?
Are deaths caused by someone's lack of attention to a detail or aspect of something?
Does a person(s) die when they enter a place and then cannot get back out?
Does someone die in a place that they go to willingly? By force? By compulsion? In a place where they seek shelter?

Did the fire go out because it had too little oxygen? This. Too little fuel? Too much CO2? And this. Too much fuel?

Does more than one person die in this situation? No.
Are deaths caused by someone's lack of attention to a detail or aspect of something? Yes.
Does a person(s) die when they enter a place and then cannot get back out? Yes--at least, not quickly enough to survive.
Does someone die in a place that they go to willingly? Assume yes. By force? By compulsion? In the specific situation I'm thinking of it was compulsory, but not really relevant to the solution. In a place where they seek shelter? No.

Did the victim go in before the fire went out? Because the fire went out? Did this happen in modern times? Was the fire set without considering what it would do to the air?

Balin

Was the fire lit to provide light? Yes.

This is nearly solved, I think all that remains is to explain the "lack of foresight."

The remaining bits might be kind of obscure to guess, so I'll $p0i1 soon if there are no objections.

was it a coal mine? since coal absorbs oxygen? No but interesting idea!
a blocked shaft in the coal mine might have prevented the worker from getting back out? Close enough for a

**********************SPOILER

This comes from an account of silver mines in colonial South America, which were very unpleasant and unsafe places, and many of the workers were either slaves or impoverished indigenous people who couldn't make a living anywhere else.

The specific lack of foresight in this case was that the mines were often built simply as long tunnels straight down into the ground, even though people at the time knew that you should dig a mine at an angle with extra air shafts up to the surface--otherwise heavy gases sink to the bottom of the pit and push out all of the breathable oxygen.

In this incident, a worker fell into the hole, and there was so little oxygen at the bottom of the hole that his torch died almost immediately. People climbed down to help, but by the time they reached him he had asphyxiated.

Um, so yeah. Merry Christmas!
