[Doriana] *Mr Burns voice* Excellent!

Yesterday, we received the news that we did not get the multi-million euro, 7-year funding from the German Science Foundation that we had applied for. A lot of work went into our proposal and we were really looking forward to the grant money. However, my co-workers, supervisor and I are actually not too sad that we didn't get it. Why?

we = several collaborating departments at my university

Good to see you here again!

Would you have had to do certain work if you had received the grant? Would you have had to change locations? Travel?

Good to see you here again! It's good to be back, although I'm so caught up in work these days that I don't know if this will be a long-term stay or a weekend visit...

Would you have had to do certain work if you had received the grant? Would you have had to change locations? Travel? No to all

Does not getting the grant money mean that you will get another advantage? Money from another source? Do you expect to have 7 years of funding, or almost the same amount, anyway? Did you reap the advantages of publicity from the application process?

Would you be sad if you did get it?

Is the subject matter of what would be funded relevant? Are you studying the funding process?

Would you be annoyed if you did get it? Angry? Did you think one of the other proposals (the one that did get it, perhaps) should have gotten the grant?

Relevant why you didn't get it? Did it go to someone who deserved it more? Relevant who did get this grant? Did anyone get it at all? Will the science get done regardless? If so, by you? By someone else?

Did you send a serious proposal to the grant? Did you send the proposal with the intent of wanting the grant money?
Is it relevant who did get the grant money? Was it another department at the same place?

Did you send a serious proposal to the grant? Did you send the proposal with the intent of wanting the grant money? Yes to both
Is it relevant who did get the grant money? No, not relevant Was it another department at the same place? Irrel

Clarification: We would have been mostly happy to get the grant money, but we would have been annoyed(ish) about one aspect of getting the grant.

Related to an event? A person? A group? An object? Or type of object? Research? Money? Researchers? An institution? Business? Would getting a grant keep something relevant from being done?

Would the grant have enabled you to hire more people? Do further research? Buy something(s)?

Relevant what your field of work is? What the end goal of the research would be? Or what the “event” would be? Would the event be the publication of the findings of the research? A formal ceremony at the end of a project?

Is it relevant how you would have received the money? If so, digitally? Through check?
Would you have purchased something tangible? Another building?

Longshot pays off!
Would you have to spend lots of time/money getting the building prepared for what you'd need it for? Which would leave less money/time for the actual research?

Is your work related to: Science? Medicine? Social sciences? Fine Arts?

Would the building be used for lectures/classes? To conduct research? Other work that is part of your professional practice? Housing? Storage? Libraries relevant?

Would you have to spend lots of time/money getting the building prepared for what you'd need it for? Money irrel; time yes Which would leave less money/time for the actual research? No, but it would still interfere with our research, explore

Is your work related to: Science? Medicine? Social sciences? Fine Arts? I work in psychology (and I don't want to get into a heated debate whether that's science or social science  )

Would the new building mean you would have to spend your time in an annoying way? Moving/setting up the new building? Doing work unrelated to your main projects? Teaching? Applying for more grants? Would the commute there be longer?

Is an experimental aspect of your job relevant? Publicity-related? Academic publishing? Clerical/paperwork-y? Would you relevantly have test subjects come to the building? Or patients/clients? Or students? Or tour groups?

If the new building was acquired, would test subjects go to the new building? Continue to go to the old building? Get confused/mistaken about where to go? Have to go to both?

Do you and your co-workers think that another building would make experimentation more annoying for the test subjects? Or more annoying for you? More difficult? Less accurate? Take longer?

Is it the change of buildings that would make experimentation/testing more troublesome? Or some aspect of the new building?

Is my FA regarding the nature of the "test subjects"? Is it not exactly an "experiment" that is being run? Are the "test subjects" anyone who happens to enter the building? Are they being polled or interviewed? Are they being treated? Are they the scientists and researchers?

Does the experiment (or whatever research is being done) rely on a specific type of building? Room? Door? Window? Does it require quiet? Are stairs relevant? Elevators? Street addresses?

Would construction noise be a hindrance to your work? (And the same for any demolition of those old building once you were working in the new one?)

Would construction noise be a hindrance to your work? YES (And the same for any demolition of those old building once you were working in the new one? Nope, we'll keep the old building because more buildings = more science)

********SPOILER********

Our application for a huge grant from the German Science Foundation was rejected. One of the things we would have used the grant money for would have been the construction of a new, three-story research facility next to our current building. This would have meant working next to constant construction noise for quite some time, which makes testing infants and toddlers a lot harder: We try to keep visual and auditory distractions to a minimum so that the kids stay on task, and construction noise would be really counterproductive.

Nice one! And yes, herding and focusing children is difficult enough without extra background noises.
