[Balin] Disc inferno: a Lateral Adventure sequel

Postby Balin » Fri Mar 13, 2015 3:40 am

(Turns out there's a 60-character limit to puzzle titles on the new forum. And I went out for two hours in the middle of typing this and came back to finish it, only to submit and find myself logged out. So I have to retype most of this.)

This is the sequel to my adventure "We're not gonna pay..." now located in the archived puzzles (November 2013). That puzzle was well-received, and I finally got around to making a sequel.

In the first puzzle, you took the role of Maria Collins, tasked with tracking down late movie rentals on your first day of work. Now Maria is working at Master Compilations, a CD shop, and has been given a new job by an unreasonable manager. Once again, you'll be making lateral connections to track down the missing albums, only this time you must catch a thief.

Clues may lead you to an album title, an album artist, a notable song from the album, or a notable lyric from the album. However, while I did include a few one-hit wonders (which may or may not be red herrings), I did not point clues toward any obscure songs or lyrics.

Good luck.

It's not even been a month since Master Compilations opened and the shop is already suffering from criminal problems. Forty CDs have gone missing in the past week, causing your manager, Victor Proust, to go on TV in an attempt to scare the thief into a confession. You and he are the only ones working tonight, as it is a warm April weekend and the shop has closed early. At about 6:30 PM, Victor calls you into his office.

"Maria, you had that thing at the rental shop, right?"

You sigh. "That job lasted one day." Which was one day too long, you mentally add.

He nods. "I thought so. Listen." Leaning closer, he adds, "This is a small shop. We don't get a lot of business. So why would someone be stealing from here?"

Sitting down, you answer, "Not sure. Unless it's someone close, and this place is the most convenient."

"Right." He sits at his computer and starts typing. "We're at the intersection of Lantham and Broad, so I'd suggest you check out the four businesses on Lantham and the four houses on Broad. I wouldn't be surprised if the thief left discs there."

That doesn't make sense, you think. "Why do you say that?"

Still typing, Victor mutters, "Well, the thief won't want to keep the CDs with him. I bet he left one at all the close houses and businesses he passed. Let's just hope he didn't get to Main Street" - Lantham branches off of Main - "or we'll never find our stolen property." He shakes his fist at the ceiling. "I will not allow Master Compilations to be made a fool of!"

You chuckle and pull out your phone. "Didn't you say something like that in your TV interview?" You find the interview on YouTube and play the video. "Yep. Exactly the same words. Same fist shake, too."

The manager shrugs. "One more thing. The thief took ten albums from each of four different decades - the 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, and 2010s." He clicks the mouse and the printer starts spitting out paper. "I wouldn't be surprised if he left an equal number of albums at the buildings nearby."

"So you think there's two CDs from each decade scattered across Lantham and Broad?" You sigh and walk forward, knowing what's coming.

"Yep. One at each building." Victor grabs the two printed papers and hands them over. "Top list is missing CDs. Bottom list is businesses and houses. And one more thing before you go. I've met some of the people who live on Broad. Strange characters, them. You might have to do some work to get the CDs from them after figuring out which one they have. I've got to stay here and make sure the rest of the inventory is secure."

"Got it, boss. Glad to help out." You walk out the manager's office and make your way through the store, exiting to the parking lot. The only vehicle in the lot is your bicycle; your car is being repaired, and the manager walks to work. You get on the bike and look through the two lists. This is going to be an interesting night; where to begin....

Hey, nice. I remember "we're not gonna pay" quite well, although think I was inactive for most or all of it, but recall monitoring it closely.
Huge puzzle statement.
Will have to peruse and let it gestate, but I hope to GalFisk and RedWine the **** out of it, with others.
And might I suggest, as an LTPF Achievement:

Hey, nice. I remember "we're not gonna pay" quite well, although think I was inactive for most or all of it, but recall monitoring it closely. Hope you can participate in this one. Can always use some good questions and pieces of logic.
Huge puzzle statement. Yes it is.

Will have to peruse and let it gestate, but I hope to GalFisk and RedWine the stars out of it, with others.
And might I suggest, as an LTPF Achievement:
The Get a Life: Be Balin Afraid it's too late for that. (Not the "be Balin" part; there's nothing I can do about that.)

Wow! I loved "We're not gonna pay", although I do not know much about movies. Ashamed to admit, I do not also know the vast majority of albums (and artists) from the list, but I'll participate in this sequel anyway!

Let's go to S.Casino! Seems like a nice beginning of the night. Please describe the surroundings when we get there. Let's also see if we manage to exchange a few words with the owner.

Let's go to S.Casino! Seems like a nice beginning of the night. Please describe the surroundings when we get there. Let's also see if we manage to exchange a few words with the owner. You bike down to the casino, a tall building that will undoubtedly look fantastic when lit up at night. Right now, all the lights are off, and the name "Sherwood Casino" hangs above the main entrance.

You walk through the main entrance and make your way toward the casino floor. The building is empty right now, which makes sense as the casino has not yet opened to the public. However, the floor is packed with all sorts of gambling tables and slot machines, which seem to be fully operational. There's also a high-armed couch in the corner stylized like a craps table, with two pillows in the shape of dice.

"Hello?" you call out to the room, hoping the owner, or anybody, might hear you.

"Yes?" You turn around and see a woman walk out from behind one of the slot machines. She's redheaded and wearing a black dress. "Hmm. You don't work here. What are you doing?"

Taken aback, you introduce yourself and explain the missing CDs. "So I'm looking for the owner... do you know where I can find Ryan Karjen?"

The woman smiles and offers her hand. "I'm Ryan. Welcome to Sherwood. Pleasure to meet you - first new face in this casino in weeks! It's been mostly movers, construction workers, you name it."

You shake her hand in thanks, but add, "Do you know where I can find the CD?"

Ryan nods. "Yeah, I found one just inside the front door a couple days ago. But...." She gestures out to the casino floor. "I need someone to test these out. You ever gamble?"

"No," you reply, shaking your head.

She shrugs her shoulders. "That's OK. You're working, so I won't charge you anything; you can just use chips with no value. And I know we both have jobs to do, so here's an incentive; you win at the right game, I'll give you the CD. Sound fair?" Ryan finishes her own sentence before you get to respond. "Good. Where do you want to start?"

Is there a roulette? If there is, try it and bet on black. If you do not win, then bet on red and then back to black. If this doesn't work (and I feel it won't), please ask (or find out) what games are there to choose.

Is there a roulette? If there is, try it and bet on black. You do that and bet on black. Ryan spins the wheel and it comes up 8 black. "Not bad," Ryan remarks.
If you do not win, then bet on red and then back to black. You did win, but didn't get the CD, so you place a chip on red. This time, the wheel comes up 29 black. On your next attempt, you bet on black again, but the wheel spins a 0.
If this doesn't work (and I feel it won't), please ask (or find out) what games are there to choose. Looking around, I can see a roulette wheel, a craps table, a poker table, and a blackjack table. Other tables don't have felt yet. "We haven't quite gotten all the supplies in yet," Ryan explains. "The felt and other materials are being brought in tomorrow, and the video poker and slot machines" - she points at the various machines around the floor - haven't been powered on yet. We're also getting the rest of the casino furniture in tomorrow. Like that settee over there," Ryan continues, pointing at the high-armed couch you saw earlier. "We're getting one in the style of every game we've got on this floor."

We lost on roulette, we lost on craps. Let's try poker. Can we play poker, since there's no more players, just Ryan and us? Please ask Ryan what kind of poker we'll be playing.

We lost on roulette, we lost on craps. Yes, but I suppose we can play the games more than once. Let's try poker. Can we play poker, since there's no more players, just Ryan and us? Sure, I'd guess she'll deal to herself as the second player. Please ask Ryan what kind of poker we'll be playing. "Texas Hold 'Em," she says, dealing out hole cards to the two of us. I check mine - 3 of clubs and king of diamonds, nothing special. She deals out the community cards: "Since this is just for fun, don't worry about placing a bet."

The first three community cards - the flop - are the 4 of diamonds, king of hearts, and queen of diamonds. Looking good so far. The turn is the 7 of spades, and the river the 6 of diamonds. You flip over your cards. "Pair of kings."

Ryan flips over her cards: 6 of spades and 8 of clubs. "Pair of sixes. Well done." But apparently I didn't win the CD.

Does Ryan look familiar at all? Ask her she's maybe somebody that you used to know?

Let's breakaway from Poker and go back to roulette. Perhaps your luck has improved since u been gone. Try 22.

Let's breakaway from Poker and go back to roulette. Perhaps your luck has improved since u been gone. Try 22. I did win at roulette the first time I bet on black, but I put a chip down on 22 and another on black. The wheel spins up 15 black. "Not bad," Ryan remarks, and slides the chips back to me.

Please bet on black again, any odd number. Try 3. 3 is red, so I put one chip on 3 and one on black. The wheel comes up double-zero - a loss.
I have won on this game a couple times, though - at least, I've correctly picked black, but not a number - so I suspect this isn't the right game.

It's just occurred to me I switched from second person to first person in the middle of a post earlier. Oops. I think I'll stick with first.

Let's try craps again. Please ask Ryan if she won't mind betting "Don't pass line". I know it's considered inappropriate in casinos, but I'm determined to get the CDs back. If she agrees, bet "Don't pass line". If we don't succeed, please ask Ryan if you can switch roles - you'll throw the dice and she'll be betting.

Let's try craps again. Please ask Ryan if she won't mind betting "Don't pass line". "Sure," she says. "I mean, we're not actually putting money on this, and we're not open for another week, so that's fine by me." I know it's considered inappropriate in casinos, but I'm determined to get the CDs back. If she agrees, bet "Don't pass line". Done. Naturally, the first throw ends up on a 7 and I lose again. If we don't succeed, please ask Ryan if you can switch roles - you'll throw the dice and she'll be betting. Ryan shakes her head. "Doesn't that defeat the point of gambling? You have to take the risk if you want the reward."

I know casinos tend not to have clocks - do you see one by any chance? Maybe at around 1:15 PM?
It must be craps since we won at poker and roulette and didn't get the CD, right? Bet 7.

I know casinos tend not to have clocks - do you see one by any chance? Maybe at around 1:15 PM? There aren't any clocks in the casino, but I pull out my phone and check the time. It's about a quarter to seven.
It must be craps since we won at poker and roulette and didn't get the CD, right? I'd think so, but I'm already getting a sense of deja vu - this is already resembling my adventure with the movies in more ways than one. I doubt it would be this easy.
Bet 7. Done. The roll comes up 4.

Oh, I forgot about Blackjack.
Play a round of that. If you're 13 or lower, hit and if you hit 19 or higher, stop.
Hopefully we'll hit a 21.

Oh, I forgot about Blackjack.
Play a round of that. If you're 13 or lower, hit and if you hit 19 or higher, stop. Ryan deals out one hand to me and one to herself. I have a nine face-up; she has a queen. I check my other card - a king. I'm already at 19, so I stay.
Ryan flips over her other card. A ten. She got 20.

Hopefully we'll hit a 21. Might as well play another round to try and get to 21, right? This time, my face-up card is an ace, and hers is a 3. My other card is a four, so I'm at 5 or 15.
I call for a hit - 3. That's 8 or 18. Hitting again gives me another ace. Now that I'm at 19, I'll stay.
Ryan hits once, adding a 7 to her pile, then hits again. With the addition of this four, she stays.
I flip over. "19."
She flips over - a five. "I've also got 19. Dealer wins on a tie."

I think exploring the numbers may get us somewhere...
On roulette results were: 8 black, 29 black, 0, 15 black, double-zero. We've won on that game. The results always seem to be either black, or zero. Ryan is red-headed and wearing black dress, what can be a hint towards roulette.
On craps, there were 9, then a 7, and also 7 in the next round. Next time we bet 7 and get 4. We've lost this game three times. However, dice-shaped pillows may indicate craps.
On poker we had Pair of kings and Ryan had Pair of sixes. We played once and won.
On Blackjack, results were: 19-20 and 19-19 (Dealer wins on a tie). We've lost twice.

I think exploring the numbers may get us somewhere... The numbers are actually not relevant at all. Results are completely random.
On roulette results were: 8 black, 29 black, 0, 15 black, double-zero. We've won on that game. The results always seem to be either black, or zero. Ryan is red-headed and wearing black dress, what can be a hint towards roulette. That is actually very good lateral thinking. But it's not what I had in mind.
On craps, there were 9, then a 7, and also 7 in the next round. Next time we bet 7 and get 4. We've lost this game three times.
However, dice-shaped pillows may indicate craps. This is OTRT!
On poker we had Pair of kings and Ryan had Pair of sixes. We played once and won.
On Blackjack, results were: 19-20 and 19-19 (Dealer wins on a tie). We've lost twice.

Mumford & Sons have a song called 'Snake Eyes', though it isn't on the missing album and isn't at all 'notable'...

Do you notice anything particularly unusual about the table or the casino itself? Are you on the main floor? Are you in a lower/deeper level?
Bet 2.

If we don't succeed on 2, please describe how exactly pillows are set on the couch, what combination they show. By the way, look at the couch and its closest setting carefully, maybe there is something noteworthy.

Do you notice anything particularly unusual about the table or the casino itself? Not really. Are you on the main floor? Yes. Are you in a lower/deeper level?

If we don't succeed on 2, please describe how exactly pillows are set on the couch, what combination they show. One of them has a 1 facing up, the other a six. The pillows are against one arm of the couch. By the way, look at the couch and its closest setting carefully, maybe there is something noteworthy. Not sure what you mean by "setting," but the pattern on the couch and cushions is exactly the same as on the craps table.
Ryan walks over with me. "You like it? Just wait until we get the roulette settee. It's supposed to look even more accurate than this one."

Ask Ryan if we can try craps with the pillows instead of dice and couch instead of table. Ryan grins. "We can absolutely try that."
Bet 7. Ryan tosses the dice-pillows at the far arm of the chair... and they land on 2 and 5!
"Well done," Ryan says. She walks behind the desk and pulls out a CD case, but instead of handing it to me, places it back on the desk. "Before I give this to you, I'm wondering if you know which CD this is?"

Rolling In The Deep? We're rolling dice in a high armed chair, Well, it's a high-armed couch. At least, that's what I've been calling it; Ryan has been calling it something else. and I feel like Blackjak was a clue to 21. This isn't it either.

Pair-o-dice Settee = Paradise City - It's the Guns n' Roses CD! "Appetite for Destruction, right?" Ryan grins. "Yep, here you go. And in case you want to come back and help me out some more, here's my card." She hands over the CD case with the Appetite for Destruction disc in it, along with her business card. "Good luck on the rest of your search!"

Thank Ryan for the CD and let's head over to the warehouse! After departing the casino, I cycle over to the warehouse. Walking inside, I can see that the building has been completely gutted. There's a man hunched over in one corner sweeping the floor. In another corner, there is a crate with a logbook on it, and a calendar hanging on the wall.

"Excuse me, are you" - I consult my list - "Mr. Ash?", I call out to the sweeping man.

He straightens up and looks at me in surprise. "No, Mr. Ash just owns the building. He lives somewhere in Europe. My name's Jerome Caldwell."

I introduce myself in turn and ask him about the missing CD. "Oh yeah, it's in that crate there. But I've been instructed not to open it until I'm done sweeping."

"How much longer do you think that will be?"

Jerome shakes his head. "I don't know. My boss told me to sweep for a certain amount of time, and I've been sweeping so long that the days have blurred into each other. So when I'm done, I'm done."

You head over to the crate - it is padlocked shut. This should be an interesting task.

Ask how he will know when he's done sweeping. If he doesn't know how to know, or doesn't want to tell, look at the floor and see if it can be determined if or when he's done. Ask if he has the key to the padlock.

Ask how he will know when he's done sweeping. "I don't even remember. I just know it's going to take months. Months!" If he doesn't know how to know, or doesn't want to tell, look at the floor and see if it can be determined if or when he's done. The floor looks pretty clean to me, but Jerome just continues to sweep. Ask if he has the key to the padlock. "Yes, but my boss told me not to open it until I'm done sweeping."

Ask Jerome if you can do the sweeping for a moment. If he agrees, do the sweeping for let's say a minute.

What is the date on the calendar? Is it correct?

While he's not looking, flip it over a few months into the future and see if he stops sweeping.

What is the date on the calendar? Is it correct? The calendar is hanging on August. It is currently April.

While he's not looking, flip it over a few months into the future and see if he stops sweeping. I flip the calendar to September. Jerome promptly looks up and drops the broom in relief. "Yes, done!" He goes over to unlock the crate, but stops and looks at me quizzically. "How did you know to do that?"

So we have Jerome Caldwell sweeping (cleaning) the warehouse until September (until the end of August) because he was so told by Yves Ash, the owner who is in Europe now.
There is a Goethe quote: "Let everyone sweep in front of his own door, and the whole world will be clean". Goethe was born in August. I do not know where this could bring us.
We have Eminem's song "Cleaning out my closet", and Eminem is the artist from our list.
There is also a biblical reference to the woman that sweeps her home until she finds the lost coin. It's Luke 15:8, and it ends at verse 9, that could relate to September. But I have no idea how to link it to a song or artist...
I feel that none of these references is relevant here...

Read the logbook! I flip through the logbook; it's full of accounting entries from prior tenants of this building. It looks like it was once a sandwich shop, then a used bookstore, and most recently it was New Life Canine Shelter. According to these entries, the shelter closed down at the end of last year.

Are there dogs on the calendar?
Perhaps the dog days are over.

Or 'dogs days of summer' which would end in August? :)
Either way - is it the Florence & the Machine CD?

Either way - is it the Florence & the Machine CD? Yes - that makes sense with both the logbook and the calendar. The closing of the shelter and the end of August could both be thought of as "dog days are over."

I explain this to Jerome and he nods. "Yes, of course." He unlocks the crate and pulls out an open CD case with the Lungs disc inside. Jerome snaps the case shut before handing it to me. "Now if you'll excuse me, I have to report to my boss." He walks out the warehouse door and heads further down Lantham.

Where should I go next?

Why not go to the gym? Speak to whomever we encounter (outside or, if possible, inside), and ask for any CDs.

I bicycle down Lantham and head inside the building named Your Dream Workout Gymnasium. The gym is almost empty; the only person I see is a tall black woman behind the counter.

I introduce myself and ask her about CDs. She gives her name as Kayla Spector, then points to a door in the back. "You might want to ask him. He's the only person who comes in regularly after six or so, and he always listens to music.

I make my way past weights and workout machines to the door in the back. Opening the door, I see a small room with fluorescent lights illuminating a large trampoline surrounded by a tall net that prevents me from seeing the person bouncing on it. However, a young-looking head pops up, and I can see that head is wearing headphones.

"EXCUSE ME!" I shout, and the next time the head pops up, one of the headphones is off.

"What?"

I again explain who I am and why I'm here.

"Oh," he says, all the while continuing to briefly pop up over the top of the net. "I'm Emmanuel L'Asporta, but most people call me Manny. And yeah, I'm listening to the CD now! When I'm done with my workout, I'll give you the CD!"

I'd sigh in frustration, but I'm used to this by now.

So, ask him when he's done, ask him if he has the CD player on him (if he has, ask if its anti-skip protection really is so great that he can trampoline without the music skipping), look around and see if there are any other things of significance in the room, see if you can see the inside of the net. If you feel sufficiently athletic, ask if you may join him.

So, ask him when he's done, "I'll be done when I'm done!" Unsatisfied, I go back to the front desk and ask Kayla when he usually finishes. She shrugs. "Could be an hour, could be longer. Manny seems to bounce on that thing non-stop."
ask him if he has the CD player on him (if he has, ask if its anti-skip protection really is so great that he can trampoline without the music skipping), He said he was listening to the disc now, so I assume it's belted around his waist.
look around and see if there are any other things of significance in the room, Behind the door, just above the light switch, is a sign which says that only one person is allowed on the trampoline at a time. There's also a sign-in sheet on another wall. I check the sheet - fifteen people have signed in to use the trampoline today. The last entry is that of Manny L'Asporta, born 6/5/97, membership #1052, signed in at 6:15 PM.
see if you can see the inside of the net. I cannot.
If you feel sufficiently athletic, ask if you may join him. The sign says I'm not allowed to do that.

Ask Manny if he can sing out loud what he hears from the CD. "Not happening. Everyone says I have a terrible singing voice."

It seems like we're trying to get Destiny's Child album "The writing's on the wall" - there is the sign on the wall, there' s "Jumpin' Jumpin'" song on the album... Now, how to get it from Manny?

Have you tried to address Manny using his first name? If not, try it now. The song "Say my name" from said album should be a clue...

I expect numbers to be relevant. As for numbers, we have:
6/5/97 - which is Manny's date of birth. Does 6/5/97 stand for fifth of June, 1997? Or sixth of May, 1997? The date also indicates that Manny is currently 17.
6:15 - which is Manny's starting time
1052 - which is Manny's number of membership. That could also stand for a date: 2/5/10.
7 - which is about current time. So Manny is jumping for at least 45 minutes.
1- number of people allowed on trampoline.

I'm not so sure about the numbers...
I feel as though this one is similar to the other ones with the quirks -

Jumping Manny? Jumping gym? Jumping Jim? Any of these bands have a guy named Jim who loves to jump?

Edit: Scratch that. The numbers ARE rather specific and conspicuous...

Looking at Manny continue to leap and bounce, I must say that he's flailing his arms quite a lot, as if he's grooving along to whichever CD he has. He clearly has a lot of energy, although given how teenagers are represented these days, I can hardly say I'm surprised.

Turn the light off! I flip off the light. From the direction of the trampoline comes a "Hey, what...", then a loud crashing sound. I turn the light back on; Manny's attempt at "Dancing in the Dark" ended with him jumping into the net, entangling himself, and knocking over the trampoline. He groans as he stands up - he seems OK.

Footsteps come up behind me; it's Kayla, who immediately heads over to Manny. "You OK?"

"Yeah, yeah. Just banged up." He takes off his headphones and slips them into a drawstring bag hanging from his back. "I think my workout's done, though."

"In that case," I interject, "may I have the CD, please?"

Manny groans, but he pulls the case out of the drawstring bag and ejects Born in the U.S.A. from his CD player. He puts the disk back in the case and hands it over.

"Thanks. And sorry about the trick with the light," I add. "Hope you're not hurt. And," I continue, facing Kayla, "I hope the trampoline isn't damaged."

She shakes her head. "It's pretty sturdy. Should probably add bolts to make sure that doesn't happen again though." She continues talking to Manny as I make my way out the gym door.

Where now?

Let's finish Lantham and head over to the daycare.
I make my way to the remaining business on Lantham, the Heart & Hope Day Care Center. I go inside and am promptly met with a bright blue room, carpeted, with empty cubbies on the wall. Wait - one of them, with the label "Ava" underneath it, has a coat and backpack inside. I can hear noises coming from behind a white door beside a row of cubbies, but before I can open it, a woman of about 40 opens the door.

"May I help you?" asks the woman?

Once again, you repeat your tale of disc searching.

"Of course I'd be glad to help. I'm Tia Person, by the way. I look after the children here, but they're mostly all home right now."

"Mostly?" you ask.

Tia nods. "Yes, there's one girl whose mother always takes her sweet, sweet time picking her up." While she is maintaining the tone of a day care facilitator, I can sense the sarcasm behind her voice. "I don't have the disc, but little Ava might. Would you like to come in and ask her?"

I accept her offer and am led through the white door into a playroom, where a brown-haired girl of about seven is climbing on an indoor jungle gym. "Ava!" Tia calls out. "This is Miss Maria. She'd like to speak with you."

Ava proudly shakes her head. "Mama says, don't talk to strangers."

"Now, Ava," Tia remarks. "Miss Maria just wants to talk with you. And I know Miss Maria, and you know me, so she's really not a stranger."

The girl cocks her head as if processing me, then nods briskly. "Okay!" She promptly hops off the jungle gym and marches up to me. "Hi, Miss Maria!" she says, reaching out her hand.

I shake it and introduce myself. "Now, Ava, do you know the CD store down the street?" She nods rapidly. "Do you have a CD from that store?"

She nods again. "It's in my backpack!"

"May I please have the CD back?"

Ava shakes her head no. "Not unless you say the magic word."

I blink. "Magic word?"

"Mama told me not to give strangers anything unless they say the magic word."

I glance at Tia, who shrugs. Guess she doesn't know either. And it's not please - I know I said that already - so...?

Are Tia and Ava the only two people in the room? Odd that you could hear noises from behind the closed door if it were just those two.
Is there anything notable about Ava's appearance? Or her coat? Or her backpack?
Can you ask Ava to tell you more about her mama?

Are Tia and Ava the only two people in the room? Yes they are, aside from me of course. Odd that you could hear noises from behind the closed door if it were just those two. Thinking back, I'm guessing the noises were Ava climbing on the jungle gym and Tia supervising - talking to her, making sure she was safe, something like that.
Is there anything notable about Ava's appearance? Or her coat? Or her backpack? I'll answer this one as the puzzle host - nothing about Ava's appearance, coat, or backpack is relevant.
Can you ask Ava to tell you more about her mama? Ava nods. "Well, Mama Miley always drops me off here at seven. Then she picks me up at seven. Sometimes she goes away for a while. Then I stay at my friend Josh's house. His parents pick him up at three."

Please ask Tia for Ava's surname. Tia shakes her head. "I'm sorry, I'm not allowed to give that information to anyone who isn't a relative or a parent of another student." How old Ava is? "She is seven."

Ask Ava what music she likes. Ask also how she prefers to spend her free time. If she seems particularly keen on some activity, ask her to demonstrate.
If you do not think it would be inappropriate, ask Ava about the first name of her father.

Ask Ava what music she likes. "Mama Miley always tells me to" - she adopts a quotational tone here - "listen to the music that reminds me who I am."
Ask also how she prefers to spend her free time. "I like to play!" If she seems particularly keen on some activity, ask her to demonstrate. She's made her way back up to the top of the jungle gym, and is staring at me from there with wide eyes.
If you do not think it would be inappropriate, ask Ava about the first name of her father. "Mama doesn't like talking about Daddy."

Ava speaks up again. "Oh, I forgot to tell you what Mama does! She's a famous lady prisonator!"

"Pardon?" you ask.

"You know, someone who prisonates a famous lady!"

I glance at Tia, who whispers to me, "Celebrity impersonator."

"Oh," I nod, before asking Ava, "Which famous lady does your mama impersonate?"

Ava just grins and shakes her head no.

Ask Ava if Miley is her mother's first name or nickname. Ask Ava to show how her mother "prisonates a famous lady".
I'm thinking about "Making mirrors", does it have any sense?

Ask Ava if Miley is her mother's first name or nickname. "It's what she likes me to call her." Ask Ava to show how her mother "prisonates a famous lady". Ava shakes her head. "I've never seen her go to twerk."
"You mean work?" I ask.
She shakes her head again. "No, twerk. Mama always says she goes to twerk in the morning."

I'm thinking about "Making mirrors", does it have any sense? That's not Ava's CD, no.

How about "prisonator"? Did a famous lady relevantly go to prison? Or did someone else? Are any of the numbers form the times of leaving and picking up (7, 7, 3) relevant? Or in 24-hour format (7, 19, 15)?

None of these are relevant. You know Ava's mother is a Miley Cyrus impersonator - and remember Googlepedia is allowed. ("Prisonator" was just my best guess as to how a child might say "impersonator.")

Say 'my name'.
As soon as I say the words "my name," Ava breaks into a big grin. "Okay!" Tia leads her out of the room, and Ava retrieves her backpack from the cubbyhole. Unzipping one pocket, she pulls out The Writing on the Wall, opening the case to show me that the disc is inside it. She snaps the case closed again and hands it over. "Here you go!"

I take the CD from her. "Thank you, Ava!" I say, as I make my way out the door.

"Bye!" I hear her call out.

I go back to my bike and, since I'm done with all the businesses on Lantham, stop by the music store and drop off the discs. Victor's doing something on his computer, so he just gives me a nod when I let him know I'm half-done.

OK, time to hunt down the discs on Broad Avenue... where should I go now?

Let's go visit Mr. & Mrs. Lloyd Corbett at #10 red house! Can do.

I knock on the door and a tall, pale-skin man opens the door. I explain why I'm here; introducing himself as Lloyd Corbett, he invites me in. We go into the kitchen, where a petite, olive-skinned woman and four children - two boys and two girls - sit around a table.

"This is my wife, Lydia, and our children" (he points at each child in turn, from oldest, about 14, to youngest, about 9) "Kalos, Petros, Clea, and Tina."

Clea pipes up: "And Petros has the CD, but he won't give it back, and he won't tell us what it is!"

"That's because I haven't lost a game yet!" Petros retorts.

This is going to be an ordeal, I think....

Ask Petros what kinds of games he's interested in... Petros grins. "We play one game." He points to a clock on the wall; the clock only has a minute hand, so it's obviously not working. "You spin the hand on the clock. We all play the game, and I always keep the CD."
"When do you play?" I query.
"There is an egg timer in the next room," Petros explains, "set to go off at random times. When it rings, we play."

...what the conditions are for winning or losing... He shakes his head. "If I told everyone that, I wouldn't get to keep the CD!"

...and if you can try them. Petros shrugs. "I don't see why not."

See if you can have a loog at that egg timer. Also see if you can spin the hour hand withint it ringingin. Can it be spun both ways? Only clockwise? Or only anti? Ask if he'd be willing to trade the CD. Ask if the other kids play any games you can join.

Can you please describe what is there on a kitchen table? There's a half-full napkin holder and salt and pepper shakers. I suspect they recently finished dinner.

Can you tell us if the 4 children have inherited their father's pale or their mother's olive skin? Olive.

See if you can have a look at that egg timer. It's behind a wall in the next room; I can't see into the kitchen when in front of the egg timer. It is currently set to go off in 25 minutes.

Also see if you can spin the hour hand withint it ringingin. There is no hour hand on the clock or the egg timer. Which minute hand do you mean? Can it be spun both ways? Only clockwise? Or only anti?

Ask if he'd be willing to trade the CD. Petros shakes his head. "We play the game to decide who gets the CD. House rule."

Ask if the other kids play any games you can join. It's Clea who answers. "We play lots of games, but only one decides who gets the CD."

Ask how do they determine who won. Tina pipes up, "It's against house rules to explain the game!" Kalos nods in agreement. "Ever since we started playing, we're not allowed to say how it works."

Ask other kids if they ever won that game. "Well, Petros always ends up with the CD, if that's what you're asking," Tina remarks, sticking her tongue out at him.

If not, try to convince them that it's unjust and they should change the game. Hmm. Perhaps I should see this game in action before I make that decision.

Wait until the egg timer rings, and see how the game is played. I don't want to wait 20 minutes. However, they can't see the egg timer from their seats, so I discreetly change the timer to 1 minute. When the minute passes and the timer rings, everyone stands up and starts running around the kitchen table. Then Lloyd reaches his arm out and spins the hand on the clock as he passes it; it stops at 5. On the next pass, Lydia spins the clock hand, and it stops at 11. One by one, still circling the table, Kalos, Petros, Clea, and Tina all spin the clock hand; their spins stop at 1, 5, 3, and 4 respectively. Then, as one, they all sit back in their seats.

Clea sighs. "Petros keeps the CD again." And she's right, as Petros is grinning from ear to ear. Tina walks into the other room, spins the egg timer, and sits down again.

Tamper with the egg timer and ask if you can join them.
Do they all spin the hand clockwise? All anticlockwise? If so, do you have to use one direction? Do the other kids know the conditions for winning? I see Petros spun it to the largest number, what happens if you spin it to a larger number than he does? Or to the exact same number?

Tamper with the egg timer and ask if you can join them. I set it to one minute, and they do allow me to join.
Do they all spin the hand clockwise? They all spun it clockwise. All anticlockwise? If so, do you have to use one direction? I have no idea. They just reached out and spun the clock hand, then kept running. Do the other kids know the conditions for winning? I presume they do, as Clea was the one who announced that Petros kept the disc. I see Petros spun it to the largest number, what happens if you spin it to a larger number than he does? No, Lydia did - she hit 11. And they all seemed to spin it randomly. Or to the exact same number? Petros matched Lloyd's spin... hmm. I don't know.

But the egg timer has just gone off again, so now we all stand up and start running. It's tough for me to keep watching the clock, but it looks like Clea was the first to spin the hand this time, and it stopped at 2. Lloyd is next, and the hand stops at 1. From then on, Tina, Petros, Lydia, and Kalos spin the clock hand, in that order, and it stops at (respectively) 8, 6, 12, and 8. Finally, I spin the clock hand, and it stops at 3. We all sit down.

"Petros again," mutters Clea.

Ask the kids if each round is judged separately, or maybe results of previous rounds count to the result. Ask the kids if Petros would still have won last or previous round, had his name been Peter. Ask the kids if they all have equal chances to win.

Ask the kids if each round is judged separately, or maybe results of previous rounds count to the result. "Separately," answers Kalos.
Ask the kids if Petros would still have won last or previous round, had his name been Peter. Petros smirks. "Our names don't have anything to do with it."
Ask the kids if they all have equal chances to win. Kalos speaks up again. "I don't see why we wouldn't."

When egg timer rings again, try to be the fourth who spins the clock hand. If that's impossible, at least do not allow Petros to be the fourth.

When egg timer rings again, try to be the fourth who spins the clock hand. If that's impossible, at least do not allow Petros to be the fourth. I sneak back around and set the egg timer for one minute, and when it rings, I keep an eye on the clock. In the chaos, I wait for three people to spin the hand, then before Petros can go fourth, I reach out and give the hand a whirl.

Once the game is complete and everyone sits down, Clea starts clapping. "Looks like Miss Collins won the game! She gets the CD!" Other voices murmur their agreement.

"Thanks, and 'Maria' is fine," I say, as a red-faced Petros leaves the room, presumably to get the CD.

When he comes back down, he is holding the CD - I can see the case in his hands, but can't make out which album it is - but he stops just outside the kitchen. "By the way, how did you know you had to do that?"

I guessed, basing on analysis of the results of previous two games... But it's probably not the expected answer. I have no idea how to link it to any of the CD's...
Is it the CD of an artist with four-letter name? Like "Katy"? Or any of the "Ladies"?

One Direction released the album "Four". Fourth song on that album is by Ed Sheeran. But somehow I doubt that's either of these. Actually, Bob Dylan's song "4th time around" suits nice, but it was released in 1966 and is not on our list. I haven't found any cover of it which could have been on the list, too.

Prosper? Multiply? This one. Shine? Die? Something good? Something bad? Neutral?

You recall that the Ed Sheeran album x is pronounced "multiply," and the connection comes to you.

"So you're supposed to 'go fourth,' and you end up with the album 'multiply,' right?" you ask?

Petros nods and hands over the CD. You snap open the case to make sure the disc is inside - it is - and you thank the Corbetts as you depart.

Where would you like to go now?

(IMO, the Ed Sheeran one is the hardest to figure out in the entire puzzle. Good job working through it.)

We go to #14 - the gray house owned by Mr. Matthew Ai. We ring the doorbell if there is any, knock on the door if there is a door, and/or greet whomever is outside/inside the house, and tell them our business.
If the above steps should somehow fail, we have a look around in order to determine how to proceed.

I walks up the steps of #14 and knock on the door, but nobody answers. I ring the bell... still nothing. Tentatively, I try the door. It opens, so I enter.

I find myself in a large gray room that reminds me of a bank vault. In fact, one wall (the wall to my right) is completely covered with what looks like safety deposit boxes, with a movable ladder allowing access to the top boxes. Directly in front of me is another door, and to my left is a wooden table with a sealed cardboard package on it. There's a CPU tower under the table, but I don't see a monitor anywhere....

Do we dare to touch the package? As an adventure gamer you'd steal anything not nailed down, but as a puzzler... maybe not?
Can the other door be rung, knocked and/or opened?

Do we dare to touch the package? As an adventure gamer you'd steal anything not nailed down, but as a puzzler... maybe not? I try to lift the package - it's a large cardboard box sealed with tape - but I can't lift it. Touching the table around it, it seems the package has been set down in a large puddle of glue and is stuck there.
Can the other door be rung, knocked and/or opened? I pull on the knob - locked. I knock - nothing. No bell either.

Are the safety boxes: all closed? They're all closed... Locked? ...but I try a random one, and it's not locked. Inside is a spoon, and nothing else. Labeled in some way? Yes. The bottom row goes from 9900-9999, the next one up from 9800-9899, and so on. I climb the ladder - yes, the top row is 0000-0099.
Is there a keyboard connected to the computer? Other input device? I don't see any cables attached to the CPU.

Can we turn the CPU on? I turn on the CPU and hear a grinding noise above me. Looking up, I see that an alcove has opened in the wall above the table. There is a computer monitor there; next to it is a small microphone and speaker. Text appears on the screen:

M.A.T.T.H.E.W.

MASTER COMMANDS
FILES
MUSIC
VIDEO
TRASH
CREATE DOCUMENTS

FOR ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, ASK

(ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE MODEL 6.24)

So "Matthew Ai" is actually "M.A.T.T.H.E.W.," A.I.? Wonderful.

Try a box in a different row. Spoon again? Try also a box in a different column. More spoons.

Hmmm...what do we have on us, by the way? Anything sharp that we could use to open the package? If not, we could try to stab the tape with a spoon or something.

I don't suppose just typing in the first names of every artist on the list would get us anywhere.

Hmmm...what do we have on us, by the way? Nothing, really. My bike and helmet are locked to a telephone pole outside. Anything sharp that we could use to open the package? Afraid not. I don't have a knife or anything like that, and there doesn't appear to be one here. If not, we could try to stab the tape with a spoon or something. I grab one of the spoons and give it a shot, but the handle isn't able to cut through the tape.

I don't suppose just typing in the first names of every artist on the list would get us anywhere. I doubt it would, but just for kicks, I try one of the names we've already used, Ed Sheeran. As I push each letter, a mechanical voice says the letter through the speaker, so I hear an "E" as I type E, then a "D" upon the second letter. I press ENTER on the keyboard, and the screen says: CD IS NOT FROM ARTIST "EDIE."

Can we "return tu hub" and try the other main menu items to see if there is something interesting? I say "Return to hub" and the computer takes me back to the main menu. I feel inspired by "files" and "trash".... I try saying "Open Files" first, but the screen puts back ONLY THE MASTER IS ALLOWED TO OPEN THIS FOLDER. VOICEPRINT MATCH FAILED. It then reloads the main menu.
Now I try "Open Trash." The screen displays

TRASH IS CURRENTLY EMPTY.

RETURN TO HUB

So I "return to hub" and am back at the main menu.

It seems like the system ads letters... To Ed it added "IE", to Alanis it added "YE" after every two letters (or after every vovel)... Try "Got".

how about "LNS"? I type that in, and the computer displays: CD ARTIST "ALANIS" RECOGNIZED.

I hear a whirring sound from under the table; looking at the CPU, I notice that Jagged Little Pill has been ejected. I grab the disc and make my way out the door.

Two houses left. Which one should I go to first?

It seems like the system ads letters... To Ed it added "IE", to Alanis it added "YE" after every two letters (or after every vovel)... Try "Got". It actually says each letter phonetically, so "Ed" became "EE-DEE," or "EDIE."

Go to the blue house. I knock on the door of #20 and a tall blonde woman opens the door.

"Is this the Bolds' house?" I ask.

The woman nods in response. "Yes, I'm Autumn Bold. What brings you here?"

After I explain, Autumn invites me in. "My husband Derek and son Brian are in the living room. Brian's finishing off a science project and Derek is helping him."

We enter the living room and I see two people, both only three to four feet tall, with their backs to the table. I glance questioningly at Autumn, who says, "Derek is a dwarf."

They seem absorbed in the table, upon which is Brian's science project. A posterboard at the back of the table reads "Natural disasters," and on the table is one model of an earthquake, another of a volcano, a tornado, a tsunami, and a hurricane. I hear the one on the right say, "Well done, son! You did this all by yourself!"

The one on the left - must be Brian - turns to his father and says, "You don't have to say you didn't help me, Dad. I'm happy you helped me!" He sounds like he is about nine or ten.

Interrupting, Autumn calls: "Derek, Brian; we have a visitor."

They face me, and after greetings, I explain why I'm here.

Derek quickly states, "No, I don't remember seeing the CD at all."

"Yes, you did, Dad!" Brian quickly responds. "You had it in here yesterday and put it away when we started this!"

Autumn calms them down. "Yesterday doesn't matter. We need to know where it is now. Any ideas?"

(I guess that's my cue....)

Tell the dwarf your name. Then ask him if his name is Derek. Then ask him if the CD was by Alanis Morissette. Then ask him if he remembers your name.

(what I'm tryng to do is check whether Derek has some form of amnesia or if he always lies)

Ask if the family has more members. Are there any pets? Ask Derek if the CD was by Coldplay or Celine Dion.

Tell the dwarf your name. Done. Then ask him if his name is Derek. "No, I'm Brian!" Brian interrupts: "No, Dad, I'm Brian. You're Dad." Then ask him if the CD was by Alanis Morissette. "It was!" Again, Brian responds, "No, Dad, the singer was a man." Then ask him if he remembers your name. "Not one bit!" Once more comes the response: "It's Maria Collins, Dad! I know you didn't forget!"

(what I'm tryng to do is check whether Derek has some form of amnesia or if he always lies)

Ask if the family has more members. Autumn shakes her head. "Right now, Brian is an only child. He keeps asking for a new brother or sister." Are there any pets? Again, I get a negative response. Ask Derek if the CD was by Coldplay or Celine Dion. "Yeah, it was Dion!" Brian refutes him again: "No, the singer was a man!"

Try to get Brian tell more about his science project. Is it finished? Will it describe more disasters? How it's made? Does it use a CD somehow?

Try to get Brian tell more about his science project. "It's for the science fair tomorrow! It's a lot of natural disasters!" I look at the project - above each model is a paragraph describing the science behind each event. "Looks good," I say. Is it finished? "Yep!" Will it describe more disasters? "Nope!" How it's made? "A lot of clay, and toothpicks, and glue." Does it use a CD somehow? "Nope."

(what I'm tryng to do is check whether Derek has some form of amnesia or if he always lies)

Whichever one of these it is should provide sizable help in revealing which disc is hidden here.

Ok, so we go the hard way (since i've no idea which cd is the right one!)....for each cd in the 2000 and 2010 lists for which the singer is a man (except those we already have), let's ask Derek if the cd is from that artist. It should be the one he answers "no".

I supposed that!! (but having spent so much time to come up with a decent answer....)

Let's try with Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More (Little Lion Man = Little "Lie on" Man)...ask Dereck if the cd is this one.

Let's try with Mumford & Sons, Sigh No More (Little Lion Man = Little "Lie on" "Lyin'", actually Man)...ask Dereck if the cd is this one. Brian interrupts before Derek can answer. "Yes, that's the right CD. Dad, where is it?"

Derek responds, "I remember exactly where it is! It's..."

Autumn, this time, interjects. "He has no idea."

OK, where is the darn thing....

See if the project can be lifted, look under it. Ask Derek if he used the cd for the project or if he accidentally droped it into the project. Are there any other relevant objects in the room?

See if the project can be lifted, look under it. I can't lift the project as a whole - it's too bulky for just one person - but I can check each of the disaster models individually. Is there any one in particular you want me to check? Ask Derek if he used the cd for the project or if he accidentally droped it into the project. By Brian's earlier statement, it seems no one was listening to it during the building of the project. Are there any other relevant objects in the room? No.

But that's not what I wanted to ask. I'd like to know if the cd is somewhere inside the project, so ask Derek those two questions and see what he replies....if he always lies, we'll have a hint of where to look.

However, if we suspect that the cd is inside the project, let's examine the hurricane: it's round shape with the eye in the middle could easily hide a cd.
As we are there, let's look also under the hurricane model.

Are there any models related to "Winter Winds" (a blizzard perhaps?) or the Dust Bowl ("Dust Bowl Dance") or what's left "After the Storm?" If so, examine those parts of the model.

Are there any models related to "Winter Winds" (a blizzard perhaps?) or the Dust Bowl ("Dust Bowl Dance") or what's left "After the Storm?" If so, examine those parts of the model. None of those are relevant, but...

Also, "Roll Away Your Stone" may point to the earthquake... ...it crosses my mind that "Little Lion Man" prominently includes the lyric "And it was not your fault but mine" in its chorus, and earthquakes have faults. I lift up the model, and find the empty CD case, so I know this must be right. Looking inside, I see something glinting inside the open fault of the earthquake model. Autumn kindly gets two Q-tips for me, and I use them to pry out the CD. Thanking the Bolds, I depart.

Only one more house, and that's #22; the sheet Victor gave me lists the owner as a Ms. Sue Nymod. But when I knock on the door, a young Hispanic man opens the door.

I'm a little surprised, but I introduce myself and ask where I might find Sue. The man laughs. "There is no Sue Nymod. Kevin and I were looking for a bachelor pad after college, and the real estate agent kept offering a lower price to women." He leads me inside, continuing, "So we made up a woman's name, and ended up getting this house fairly cheap."

As we pass through the kitchen, I notice magnetic letters spelling out SUE NYMOD on the refrigerator. Looking at the letters, something occurs to me. "Oh, I see. 'Nymod' spelled backwards is 'donym,' and she is a 'pseudonym.'"

The man laughs as we enter the living room, where another man - about the same age, black, and very tall - is adding something to a very tall tower of... I have no idea what that tower is made of. He turns around and introduces himself. "Hi. Kevin Gore. You've already met Zack." ("Harkens," Zack interjects, supplying his last name.) "So what do you think?"

I look around. Apart from one gigantic object of note, there's not much here - a TV and Xbox, a couple couches, a half-filled bookcase, and a table with a copy of Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine on it. "What's that gigantic tower?"

Kevin grins. "That's our Tower of Detritus!"

Zack nods. "We started it when we were roommates last year. Now Kevin's the only one tall enough to keep adding to it."

They discuss the History of the Tower of Detritus some more before i remember why I'm here. "Sorry to interrupt, but do you have the CD?"

Zack snaps his fingers. "Yeah! Rented it, but never actually listened to it. It's right over there, on the..." He goes over to one of the bookshelves, then turns slowly. "Kevin? Did you by any chance add it to the Tower of Detritus?"

Kevin scans the higher portions of the tower, then points. "I think I see it!" Zack moves the table over; standing on it, I can see the edge of the CD case, balanced on a corner, where Kevin is pointing. "Unfortunately, if I take it out now, the whole thing is going to topple."

"So what am I supposed to do?" I ask.

"Help us find something to swap out," Kevin states. "It doesn't have to be exactly the same shape, but it needs to be as thick. There's got to be something around here...."

The guys start looking around. This is going to be an interesting task....

Have a look around. What do we see? It's a pretty sparse room; I've already described what I've seen in the house. Ask if the case can be substituted for several thinner objects that add up to the same thickness. Kevin shakes his head. "I don't think I'd have time to put multiple things in. It'll have to be one item."

The magazine can be made into whichever thickness we want, just choose the right amount of pages, possibly folding some of them. So ask the guys if the magazine is of any use.
if not, we could look for an Xbox game cover, or a book.

Figure out which CD they have first; then you should be able to find the right item to swap.

Please ask Kevin how do they choose material for the tower. "Very carefully." Can they add anything to it? "Depends on what parts of the tower need supporting. We can't just put anything anywhere."

Another reminder: by process of elimination, the CD here must be from the 2010s. The only one used so far from that group is Ed Sheeran's x.

Can we take a book and leaf through it until one half has the required thickness? Zach interrupts. "It's not just the thickness; it's the size. Something way too big won't be able to fit in that small gap." Is the magazine too thin to use? Unfortunately.

Building on the SUE NYMOD clue, boys names would be: Zach Snekrah and Kevin Erog. Plus, I've just noticed that NYMOD is not "Donym" backwards, it's "Domyn". Does that lead us somewhere?

I've been thinking alog these lines for days now....infact SUE NYMOD+P is the anagram of pseudonym....I've checked anagrams of the guys names + a letter, to no avail..also checked all artists' real names, but nothing....so I'll ask:

The names of the two guys relevant? Relevant that Kevin is black and Zack is hispanic? That Kevin is tall and Zach is short? Do we have all clues to get which CD they have?

Can we examine the Ellery Queen magazine? Can we ask if they remember the artist uses a pseudonym?

Do they have other CDs that could be used? "Sorry," Kevin says. "My brother's borrowing most of what we've got." Can we measure the gap? It's about the thickness of one CD case wide. There might be a few millimeters of space on either side of the case.
Building on the SUE NYMOD clue, boys names would be: Zach Snekrah and Kevin Erog. Plus, I've just noticed that NYMOD is not "Donym" backwards, it's "Domyn". Does that lead us somewhere? Yes... to the realization that I didn't triple-check my spelling. Creator error, nothing more. Spelling the guys' names backwards will not get you anywhere.

Connections between "Detritus" and "Antebellum"? No, but...

As I ponder this, I realize that "Lady Antebellum" is the name of the band, not the lead singer. That meshes with the residents of the house - multiple people using one name as an alias. The presence of an Ellery Queen magazine strengthens this, as I know "Ellery Queen" was the pen name of two writers.

"Is it the Lady Antebellum CD?" I ask, and Kevin nods. "Yes, that's it! But we still need something to replace it."

Magnetic letters or something else from the kitchen? I go back and grab the magnetic U off the fridge, theorizing that the guys "need U now."

"Will this do?" I ask.

"Perfect!" says Zack, who passes it over to Kevin. Kevin slowly slides the CD out; when the disc falls, Zack reaches to catch it as Kevin, using his fingers to prop the gap open, inserts the magnetic U. He carefully moves his hands apart, and the tower is still in place.

"It worked!" cries Kevin, and he holds up his hand for a high five. I slap his hand as Zack hands over the CD, opening the case to confirm that the disc is still inside it.

"Thanks guys," I say, and after we exchange phone numbers and goodbyes, I make my way back out to my bike.

* * * * * * * * * *

I bike back to Master Compilations and head back into Victor's office. He raises his head as he closes one of his desk drawers. "I got the discs," I say, and place them in a stack on his desk.

Victor nods. "Well done." He reaches into his pocket and pulls out a keyring, which he tosses over to me. "Put the discs away and lock up. I have to head home now." Before I can respond, he makes his way out the door.

I walk around the desk, thinking that even though I found all the discs, we're still no closer to catching the thief. However, I notice a piece of paper sticking out of the drawer that Victor closed. Carefully pulling it out, I read:

The odd one out will crack the case

This must mean something, and since I've got all eight discs, this has to be a clue to figuring out the thief....

Maybe Matthew Ai is odd one - only one "owner" that is not a person? Thinking over this one, I realize that there must be a human owner of this house, someone who hid their ownership behind their computer. Then the wording of the paper catches my eye: The odd one out will crack the case.

Spreading out the stack of discs, I realize that Jagged Little Pill, which you got from "Matthew Ai's" house, is the only one without a case. Yes, something must be going on at 14 Broad Avenue.

Using Victor's keyring, I lock up the store and cycle over to #14. However, when I try to open the door, it is locked.

Do any of the keys you have fit? I try all of the manager's keys in the door... and one of them unlocks it. Okay, this can't be good.

I open the door and see what I saw before - gray room, computer, table with cardboard box, ten thousand miniature vaults.

Are the spoons still there? Is M.A.T.T.H.E.W. on? If not let's turn it on. Do we get the same main menu? If yes, let's try FILES, VIDEO and TRASH...just to exclude them. Are they still empty?

If yes, let's try FILES, VIDEO and TRASH...just to exclude them. Are they still empty? I have no way to access the menu, as I am not the master.

Can you use any of the keys to open the cardboard box? That's what I usually do when I don't have a knife.
Can you insert any CD in the computer? Can you turn it off?

Can you insert any CD in the computer? Can you turn it off? I can't do anything with the computer right now.

Can you use any of the keys to open the cardboard box? That's what I usually do when I don't have a knife. Actually, there's a small pocketknife attached to the keyring, so I use it to cut open the box.

Inside are the other thirty-two CDs. I quickly look through the stacks - they're all there.

I'm about to call the police when I hear a voice behind me say "Drop gate 2." As I turn around, a metal gate drops from the ceiling, trapping me on this third of the room (with the table, box, and computer). I can see Victor through the gate, about to pass through the other door in the room.

"What are you doing?"

Victor shrugs. "Looks like I just caught the thief, about to plant a box of CDs in my house. Time to call the police." He walks through the other door, closing it behind him. I pull on the gate, but I can't lift it.

OK, I have to come up with a plan, and quickly.

Could we have a recap of what we have and may use (after checking if the box contains only CDs)?
Can we do anything with the computer now? Is it still showing "AWAITING COMMAND FROM MASTER"?
We can't climb the gate or onto the table to escape, right?

Could we have a recap of what we have and may use (after checking if the box contains only CDs)? I have my phone and Victor's key ring. And yes, all 32 remaining discs, and nothing else, are in the box.
Can we do anything with the computer now? Is it still showing "AWAITING COMMAND FROM MASTER"? No, it's now on the main menu.
We can't climb the gate or onto the table to escape, right? No, as the gate is floor-to-ceiling.

Got an idea!
The computer accepts only vocal inputs and only from the master for some functions.....but we do have the master's voice on our phone (or can get it from Internet) in that video where he says "I will not allow Master Compilations to be made a fool of!"
So, let's go through the menus to see if there is some way to lift the gate, and if it prompts for a password or something similar, let's try to replay the word "Master" from that video.

I state "Master commands" and a new menu appears:

ALL THESE COMMANDS MAY BE INSTRUCTED BY MASTER ONLY:

RAISE GATE 1
RAISE GATE 2
DROP GATE 1
DROP GATE 2
RAISE GATES
DROP GATES

CURRENT MASTER MAY STATE "MASTER" TO RESET MASTER.

Pulling up the video from my phone, I play the clip of Victor saying "I will not allow Master Compilations to be made a fool of!" Sure enough, the word "Master" brings up a new screen:

NEW MASTER, PLEASE STATE FIRST NAME, THEN TYPE FIRST NAME TO CONFIRM.

Can we say Alanis and type LNS (as we did before and it worked)? Maybe say Alanis as you spell LNS.....or better, we could _spell_ Maria and type Maria... and if it needs a longer word, just spell what you write.

I guess the closest approximation to "Maria" would be M-R-E-A, so I say "Maria" and type those four letters. The screen now reads:

"MARIA" NOW RECOGNIZED AS MASTER.

It then reverts to the "Master Commands" screen.

Ok, so let's go with RAISE GATE 2. Then DROP GATE 1. I hope this would trap Victor in, if not let's raise both gates.

Ok, so let's go with RAISE GATE 2. Then DROP GATE 1. I hope this would trap Victor in, if not let's raise both gates. Sure enough, "Raise gate 2" lifts the gate in front of me, and when I command "Drop gate 1," a gate lowers in front of the door Victor had entered. Now I can get around to calling the police.

After I hang up, I call Ryan and let her know what's going on, and call Kevin and Zack to let them know, so they can verify what I've been doing all night. As I hang up the phone for the third time, Victor opens the door - it hinges away from the gate - and calmly says "Raise gate 1." When nothing happens, he says it louder. Then shouts it.

"It's not going to work, Victor," I tell him, placing my nametag on the table. "Get used to those bars."

"You-" Victor begins to interject, but he becomes quiet upon hearing approaching sirens.

As soon as the police walk through the door, Victor cries out, "Arrest her! She framed me for theft and trapped me in my own house!"

A policeman approaches me, and I ask, "Did he say over the phone that I framed him for stealing the CDs?" The policeman nods, and I hear Victor yell from behind the gate, "I never touched those CDs! It's all her!"

"Fingerprint the discs," I tell the cop. "I touched the CDs to make sure they were all there; I admit my prints will be on them."

The cop makes a call on his radio, and a few minutes later, a second person comes in. He takes both Victor's and my fingerprints, then dusts the CD cases and confirms that there are two sets - mine and Victor's.

After I "raise gate 1" so the cops can arrest Victor, I walk outside and get on my bike. I really need to find a less puzzling job....

****SPOILER****

WELL DONE! Thanks to everyone who participated: Yojimbo, Tiger, Redwine, Galfisk, Kyeann, Pete, Becca, Acridian, and those I forgot.

(One last clue that I don't believe anyone picked up on. The computer's name was M.A.T.T.H.E.W., and its A.I. model was 6.24. This was a clue to Matthew 6:24, the verse that begins "No man can serve two masters.")

This was fun! I like how it was split into parts, so that you could get into the adventure midway without reading the whole thing.
