[Balin] When I make enough money... (Lateral Adventure Pt 3)

Postby Balin » Tue Jun 14, 2016 7:37 pm

This is the third and final puzzle in the Maria Collins lateral adventure series that was created as a "this might be an interesting idea" idea on the U.S. Capitol's West Lawn on July 4, 2013. Again, you'll be using lateral clues to find missing items, this time books. If you haven't played either of the first two or would like a refresher, the first puzzle is here:
http://lateralpuzzles.com/discus/messages/2928/22861.html

And the second puzzle is here:
http://lateralpuzzles.com/puzzles/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=10674

I switched from second to first person in the middle of the second puzzle; I'm going to try and keep it in first person this time.

Apparently companies don't like it when your past two jobs have lasted less than a month combined, as it's been a very long time since anyone's hired me. But I've been brought on for a "trial period" (the email said) at Fagin Library, a block off the campus of James A. Garfield College, which is fortunately close to home.

For most of the day, the head librarian, Rhonda Kyle, has been showing me the ropes: going over the computer system, showing me the setup of the shelves, and so on. It's now just after 6 PM, and Rhonda says she has one more task for me.

"Listen, I remember what you told me about working at the movie rental place and the CD shop, how you had to go all over town to find missing inventory. And I remember you wanted to do something a bit more normal." I nod in agreement.

"However," she continues, "I need you to do it again."

I sigh. "For some reason, I'm not as surprised as I was the last two times."

Rhonda holds up her hands. "Hang on. I'm not trying to put you through a puzzle just for the sake of a puzzle. I'm asking you to do this because you're really good at it."

"Alright," I say. "What's the backstory?"

Chuckling, Rhonda heads behind the desk and starts pulling up records on the computer. "There are 40 books which were checked out at the start of May but have not been returned. The student worker who checked them out graduated without completing the record in the system. What we do know is that eight people – seven faculty members and one student – each came in and checked out one book. Those eight books are two from each of four sections. Then one of those eight people came back and checked out 32 at once, which you aren't supposed to be able to do, but the student worker allowed it anyway. So I need you to figure out who has all these books."

"Who has the books?" I ask.

"Here," she says, taking a piece of paper from the printer and handing it to me. "These are the faculty and student who checked out books. And here," she continues, giving me another printed sheet, "are the missing books. And tell them I'll waive the fine for the one book they checked out, because of the incomplete records. Whoever has the 32 other books, I'm not waiving that one. Don't tell them that," she says, grinning.

I take the papers. "See you in a bit."

"Hang on," she says, gesturing for my phone. "Let me give you my cell phone number so I can let you know if I figure anything out."

"And let me get yours," I say, swapping phones with her. "I'll let you know when I figure out who has what."

We trade contact info and swap phones back. "Good luck," she says. "I've got to grade these grammar tests for my first graders; I also substitute at the elementary school three minutes away."

"Thanks," I say, grabbing my drawstring bag off a table and heading out.

As I'm about to get on my bicycle, I hear my phone ringing and look at the name on the screen: Ryan Karjen. I answer and we exchange greetings.

"Heard you finally got hired!" she says.

"Yeah, but it's just a trial period," I add. "Who knows if I'll be here past today. And by the way, guess what I'm doing again." I explain to her what Rhonda just told me.

Ryan laughs. "Girl, maybe normal's not in your cards. And I told you I could always use someone on the casino floor. But city law..."

"...says you can't work in a casino until you're 21, and I've still got a few months until I get there, I know," I say. "Right now I've got to deal with this thing at the library. We'll see what happens past that."

"You got it," Ryan says. "Hey, guess who's here right now?"

I hear her handing over the phone to someone, then another familiar voice comes over the line: "What's up Maria?"

"Good to hear from you too, Zack," I say. "Kevin there too?"

"He's hopefully not sucking at poker," Zack says. "So Ryan tells me you're running around looking for CDs again?"

"Books, this time," I say, before summing up my task again.

Zack laughs. "Good luck with that. Hey, call if you need help, OK?"

Ryan interjects on the other line. "Remember, no using cell phones at tables." She then addresses me: "If you need any help, try calling me. I'm in my office right now and I'll try to help out. Zack, if you or Kevin are free, you can come over and try and help out too. Let him know, OK?"

I hear Zack say "OK!" over the line, then, "Hear you soon, Maria!"

"Take care," I say. Then, to Ryan: "Sounds like a plan. Thanks for the help!"

"Not a problem," she says. "Suppose we'd both better get back to work now. Bye!"

"Bye!" I say, then hang up.

I get on my bike and look at the two sheets of paper again. Where should I start...?

Three notes before beginning. First, you'll be collecting a lot of documents over the course of this puzzle. To keep you from scrolling up and down all the time, I'll be adding the documents you find into this Google Doc:
http://bit.ly/1ZOMmNw

The list of books and people who have them are there right now. When you get another document, I'll add it.

Second, I'm going to try to use an in-character hint system: you may call Ryan (and Kevin and Zack, the three of whom were introduced in the second puzzle) whenever you need a hint.

Third, you may use any external resources or Internet sites you need to help solve the puzzle.

Good luck everyone!

Wow, this sounds fun! My first idea is that the culprit read something in one of the books that made him or her want to check out all the others...nothing's jumping out at me, so let's go.

First, let's please flip the papers over and squint really close--make sure I'm not missing any notes.

Call Rhonda real quick, apologize for interrupting her while she grades, and ask if there is any way to contact the student who checked the books out.

Then, unless another puzzler has a better idea--let's head to Science Hall room 208 and try to find Prof. Drake.

Wow, this sounds fun! My first idea is that the culprit read something in one of the books that made him or her want to check out all the others...nothing's jumping out at me, so let's go. Hope you enjoy it!

First, let's please flip the papers over and squint really close--make sure I'm not missing any notes. There's nothing on the back of either one.

Call Rhonda real quick, apologize for interrupting her while she grades, and ask if there is any way to contact the student who checked the books out. "Good call," she says. "I'll check employee records and will text you her name and phone number."

Then, unless another puzzler has a better idea--let's head to Science Hall room 208 and try to find Prof. Drake. I don't know where Dragam Hall is, but when I cycle onto campus, I spot a stand-up map and use that to plot a route there.

Arriving at Dragam Hall, I leave my bike outside locked to the rack and go in. Upstairs I find Room 208, which has a nameplate reading "Dr. Agnes Drake – Physics" on it. I knock on the door, but no one answers, so I try the handle – locked.

Before I can knock again, the next door opens and a tall, frustrated-looking woman with graying hair comes out. "Office hours are over," she says. "Get to your next class."

"I'm not one of the students," I say. "I'm here from the library about a book you haven't returned."

"Hmmph," she mutters, and I think I hear her murmur something that sounds like "pestering fly." But she opens the door she was just exiting and invites me in.

I enter this room, which is a physics classroom, and notice a contraption with wires, pulleys, cups of water, ramps, tracks, and other things going all the way around the walls (except here by the door). In fact, part of it exits through a small window into what must be Dr. Drake's office, then comes back out the window. (At least, I assume that's her office; one part of the contraption is a big balloon that blocks my view.) "What's this?"

"Rube Goldberg machine," she says tersely, going through desk drawers. "What book did you want?"

"Well, I don't know," I admit. "Our records–"

She closes the drawer suddenly. "I've read more than one book in my life, you know. How am I supposed to remember what I checked out?"

Guess it's up to me again...

Inspect the machine and see if there is something relevant. Ask her what the machine is for. Also, ask ker if she knows about Heath Robinson's drawings.

Mind if I drop in? I am an avid reader. And the first thing that comes to mind is The Time Machine. I am going by title only for this, though, so I could be wrong....

Also, do you mind I take this concept and modify it a bit?

Inspect the machine and see if there is something relevant. I try to approach the machine but Dr. Drake practically yanks me back. "No touching the machine. Move one piece and the whole thing falls apart."

Ask her what the machine is for. "Since it's the summer class, I try to give the students a few less grueling assignments," Dr. Drake says. "For this one, I made this Rube Goldberg machine, which starts by turning off the light switch" – she points to the switch by the door, which I now see has a small piece of wire tied around it – "goes all the way around the room, into and out of my office, and ends by ringing that bell." She points at a bell hanging from an electric fan on her desk. "If the students do a good job, I let them end class by turning off the lights, and they can leave when the bell rings."

"You said you made the machine?" I ask. "Not the students?"

"It's still an assignment," Dr. Drake responds. "First, the students had to inspect the machine to try and catch any areas where it could be improved – more reliable, less dangerous, that sort of thing. They turned in their list of improvements and received feedback today. If you want to take a look at the improvements they came up with, here." She takes a piece of paper off her desk and hands it to me. "Now can you get to the point about the book and quit being a pestering fly?"

So that is what she said earlier. Good to know.

The Rube Goldberg improvements have been added to your documents: http://bit.ly/1ZOMmNw

Also, ask her if she knows about Heath Robinson's drawings. She frowns. "Never heard of him. Not a fan of art."

Mind if I drop in? I am an avid reader. Welcome to the puzzle! Always glad to have new people participate.

And the first thing that comes to mind is The Time Machine. I am going by title only for this, though, so I could be wrong.... It could be, since this is undoubtedly a machine, but I should make use of all the information I have. I do ask Dr. Drake if it's The Time Machine, which she gruffly dismisses. "I prefer science fact to science fiction. And the book I read was a mean book. Mean."

Also, do you mind I take this concept and modify it a bit? Go for it!

Looking over the Rube Goldberg sheet, I suddenly hear my phone's text alert. I step out into the hall, presuming Dr. Drake will get on my case for having my phone in a classroom, and check my phone. It's from Rhonda:

"Former student worker is Mary Traub. Everyone calls her Squeaky." She also includes her phone number.

I fire a text back. "Thanks for the info. By the way, Dr. Drake says there are still classes going on? Isn't it summer?"

Waiting for Rhonda's reply, I call Squeaky. After two rings, an uninterested female asks who this is, and confirming that said female is Squeaky, I explain the situation.

"I was hoping you could give me some info about the books checked out that haven't been returned," I say.

"No much," she says, sounding bored.

"Well, do you at least remember something about who came back and checked out 32 books at once?" I ask.

She pauses a moment before answering. "Nope. I just remember looking up, saying, 'Oh, you again, I've got this,' and then going back to the computer."

"And you don't remember who that was?"

"Nope."

"Will you at least call or text me if you remember something?"

"Sure," Squeaky says. "Bye." She hangs up.

I'm not sure how helpful she will be, but I do notice I've gotten a reply from Rhonda:

"JAGC offers summer classes in June-July for students looking to earn some extra credits. Also some extracurriculars (football, drama) are required to be here in summer."

Ask her if any of these mean anything to her

'Chunk of meat'
'Telekinesis'
'Hobson's choice'
'Honest schemer'
'Stubborness'

Oh, and also ask her if 'pestering fly' phrase she used relates to the book.

Well, all the other books aren't mean. Those six are the only ones which sound mean or have mean characters in them.

Ask what does she mean by 'mean book'.

The students have made 330 suggestions in total, and there's 15 of them; so the average (that is, mean) number of the suggestions made by a student is 22.

Ask her if the book she checked out is Catch-22.

No, I don't think it is. I thought so myself, but since 'Hobson's choice' means nothing to her, I doubt that's the answer. Hobson's choice is essentially a synonym of Catch-22, info which I got from book page on Wikipedia.

Good point, I didn't think of that. But, judging by one of the suggestions, the dominoes in the machine are put on some "stairs of books". Maybe she put the book in there, without having read it or even knowing what it's about.

By the way, do you see those books in the machine? If so, can you read the titles? Do any of them fit our list?

Ask her is machine related to the book she took out in some way? "The machine is an assignment," she grumbles.

And ask her if wildlife fascinates her? "Not particularly. Don't know what this has to do with the book."

Judging by one of the suggestions, the dominoes in the machine are put on some "stairs of books". Maybe she put the book in there, without having read it or even knowing what it's about. By the way, do you see those books in the machine? If so, can you read the titles? Do any of them fit our list? I don't see any stairs of books in here, so they're probably in Dr. Drake's office. I can't see through the window since a balloon is blocking it, but I ask Dr. Drake if she can open the office so I can see if the book is in there. She shoots that down. "Even I can barely get into that office with the machine everywhere. I can't let you in; you might break it."

The students have made 330 suggestions in total, and there's 15 of them; so the average (that is, mean) number of the suggestions made by a student is 22.

Ask her if the book she checked out is Catch-22. I do so, and she thinks for a moment, then nods. "Oh yes, that was it. Now let me see..." She rummages through one of her desk drawers and pulls out the book. "Very good read. Now shoo!" She tosses the book at me; I catch it and leave the classroom.

Where to next?

Wait, wait, wait. If that was it, how come Hobson's choice meant nothing to her?! It's possible she simply never heard the term; I read Catch-22 in high school and never heard the term "Hobson's choice" until college.
The more direct reason is because this is a lateral puzzle, and the straightforward approach won't necessarily work.

Well, I say you go visit Beryl next then. I head downstairs and notice a paper campus map someone dropped on the steps, so I pick that up; it should help me find my way around.

I cycle over to Karsimoff and walk in. I can hear some light instrumental music coming from behind the main stage door, so rehearsal is probably going on. I decide to check in there if Ms. Evers-Kent isn't in her office, but for now, I'll go to the office. I knock on the office door, and a voice inside says, "Come in." I enter to see a woman with frizzy brown hair sitting behind a desk making notes in a spiral notebook. She looks to be in her late 30s.

"Ms. Evers-Kent?" I ask, and the woman confirms that is her, so I explain why I'm here.

"Oh yes, that," she says. "The choreographer – she's working on the opening number with the cast now – wanted to read it, so I borrowed it and gave it to her, then she gave it back, and... where did I put that thing?" she wonders.

"Do you remember which book it was?" I ask.

She shakes her head. "This office is a mess. I know where everything is, but until I know what it is I'm looking for, I can't find it!"

Looks like I have another puzzle to work out...

The campus map does not count as one of your documents because I have no idea how to get that into a Google Document.

Check the office for something relevant. The office is very cluttered; I don't know where I could start looking. Then ask her if we can look at her notebook. She shakes her head. "It's just notes for some of the scenes we haven't rehearsed yet – how they're going to be staged and such. If you want to see it, come to the show in September. Should be really good."

Any way we can go to the rehearsal? I ask Ms. Evers-Kent if there's a way I can see the rehearsal, and she shakes her head. "Sorry, Leah – that's the choreographer, Leah Price – never likes to be interrupted when she's scheduled to work with the cast, even by me. Annoying, I know, but she's a good friend and a better choreographer. And the opening number is a huge dance routine, so now would be a really bad time."

or know what they are staging? "Now that, I can tell you," Beryl says, becoming more animated. "We're performing Carousel. I've been wanting to put this show on since I started directing here. And I'm really excited about the cast and crew. Here," she says, handing me a piece of paper. "This is the cast list. We have some really talented freshmen coming in, including our Julie. Saw her audition and knew we had something special."

Wait a sec. She mentioned Julie. I looked at the cast list and saw no one with that name in there. Ask her why isn't Julie in the cast list. Based on the answer, I might have another solution.

Also ask her if the names of cast members have links to the book.

Wait a sec. She mentioned Julie. I looked at the cast list and saw no one with that name in there. Ask her why isn't Julie in the cast list. Based on the answer, I might have another solution. "Julie Jordan is the main female lead," Beryl explains. "Lydia Aidgen is the girl playing the part. You haven't seen the show, I take it?" she adds.

"No, I haven't," I admit.

Beryl grins. "It's a fantastic Rodgers and Hammerstein show; in fact it was Richard Rodgers' favorite of his own musicals. It's very moving and should provoke a lot of discussion, especially since there have been incidents of domestic violence in the news with those NFL players. You should listen to the music," she says. "I don't have any of the recordings in here, but you can probably find one on YouTube, at least."

Also ask her if the names of cast members have links to the book. "Well, I presume their names are whatever their parents gave them." She looks puzzled. "I don't see how that would help figure out the book."

Well, I used Google, I admit, but from that I can only make sense of one book. Well, two, if I use that clue.

To be thorough, ask her are Heavenly Friend 1 and Heavenly friend 2 associated with the book.

I pause to try and refresh what I know so far. I have the cast list, and I know that Ms. Evers-Kent is directing Carousel, that Leah Price is currently choreographing the show's opening musical number, and that incoming freshman Lydia Aidgen is starring as Julie Jordan. Hmm...

Wait, is there a book about freshman doing something big? Like Matilda?

Lemme look at book list and try to connect them to Rodgers and Hammerstein.

Did Leah Price use the book to get inspiration for the choreography? Relevant that the opening theme is a waltz? Is there a carousel or a waltz in the book? Numbers next to names are ages, right? Lydia is a freshman even if she's 20?

Did Leah Price use the book to get inspiration for the choreography? "I have no idea how she gets inspiration, but however she does, it's good." Relevant that the opening theme is a waltz? Very! Is there a carousel or a waltz in the book? "I don't know; I wasn't the one who read it." Numbers next to names are ages, right? Lydia is a freshman even if she's 20? "Those numbers are their graduating years, so Lydia is in the Class of 2020."

Well, the only thing coming up is Romeo and Juliet. If that's not correct either then I shall dig deeper. That's not it, but...

Wait, is there a book about freshman doing something big? Like Matilda? Lemme look at book list and try to connect them to Rodgers and Hammerstein. ...I realize that the first number in the show is "The Carousel Waltz," and thinking about waltzes makes me start humming "Waltzing Matilda"...

"Ms. Evers-Kent, was the book Matilda, by any chance?" I ask.

"Oh yes, of course," she says. "And now that I know the title..." She goes digging in the cabinet and pulls it out. "There are so many books in there I just had to find the right one." Handing me the book, she says goodbye and wishes me luck – well, says "Break a leg!" – with the rest.

OK, that's two done. Who's next?

As a matter of fact, it's the first book I read. :) Awesome!

Can we visit the coach now? The football field is a little farther away from the rest of campus, but to make sure I get there before practice ends, I decide to go there now.

I cycle over to the field, and I can see the coaches leading the team, the offense in white and the defense in dark gold, through positional drills. As the linemen grunt pushing against blocking sleds, I spot one player wearing a red jersey with number 25 on the sidelines by a water cooler holding a clipboard. I go over to him.

"Excuse me," I say. "Do you know which one is Coach Okhill?"

The player points to the coach over by the blocking sleds. "That's him. You won't want to talk to him during practice, though. I can go over the next time he whistles for a water break between drills. What do you need him for?"

I explain the situation with the library books, and he nods. "Ah. I can definitely ask Dad about that next break."

"Dad?" I ask.

The player nods. "Yep, my dad's the head coach. My name is Lon Okhill II. Any other way I can help?"

Let's see...

Ask if the blocking sleds have a significance in training. Also ask if we can see the clipboard.

Ask if the blocking sleds have a significance in training.
"Of course they do!" Lon says. "We use them to help with better blocking technique and getting a better push when blocking. You know," he adds, "when Jag-see started their football program, they didn't budget enough for proper equipment, so my dad built his own blocking sleds. Stuffed 'em with books to get the proper weight. The budget's better but he still makes 'em that way!"

"Hang on," I interrupt. "What's Jag-see?"

"You're not a student?" Lon asks, surprised; I shake my head no. "You certainly had me fooled," he says. "The school is James A. Garfield College, but all the students call it JAG-C. Well, our students. At away games they call us kitty litter," he says, grinning.

Also ask if we can see the clipboard.
He shows me the clipboard; the top paper is a list of players with some notes next to them. "What's that?" I ask.

"It's Dad's projected starters for the team this year," Lon says. "Some reporters are supposed to come by later in practice and Dad wants them to know the starters. I don't really know why," he adds, "since it's still June and we've got plenty of practices to go. I'm–"

Before he can finish, someone on the field blasts a whistle three times.

"Hang on," Lon says to me, before pushing the water cooler – which I now see is on a wheeled table, along with lots of paper cups – out onto the field. All the players gather around for a drink, and after a couple minutes, they all go back to their drills and Lon wheels the cooler and cups back to the sideline.

"Sorry about that," he says. "I'm the team water carrier this year. Now what was I saying?"

"You were talking about the starters," I respond.

"Yes, right," he says. "Well, I'm taking notes on them in positional drills, mainly Oz and Warren, to see what I can do to improve my own play."

"Can I see one of those?" I ask.

"Sure," Lon says, giving me one of the rosters.

I look at the team name on the top. "Galleons? Never heard that as a team name."

"It's pretty unique," Lon says, "and it fits with Garfield. But at away games, we're usually called kitty litter."

I'm curious – what was your logic for that?

Well, James. A Garfield was the name of the college. He was the politician who lead the party of men, rivaled by a party led by another politician. Also, football is a sport played by two teams. Both remind me how in the book there was two opposing groups on the island. It was worth a shot.

Ask him is there anything specific about blocking sleds.

(I didn't put any intentional red herring books in this puzzle.)

Ask him is there anything specific about blocking sleds. He shakes his head. "Other than what I told you – that we use them for drills and that Dad makes his own – not really."

Well, I kinda ran out of ideas. There is nothing substantial I can use at the moment either. Not really sure what to do, I excuse myself for a moment, step aside, and call Ryan. She picks up on the third ring.

"What's up?" she asks.

I explain the situation at the football field. "So now I'm not really sure what to do."

"Me neither," she admits. "I think..."

"One moment," a male voice interrupts; I recognize it as Zach. "What did you say he said he was?"

"What do you mean, he said he was?" I ask.

"I overheard a bit of what you said at the end – you said he said he brings the water out to the players, but that wasn't the word. What did he call it?"

"Water carrier," I say. "Why?"

"That's an odd term," he says. "Most teams have water boys, and they aren't usually students. I'd ask him about that."

"Thanks for the help," I say, before saying goodbye and hanging up.

Well, then, I suppose it's useful in some way, so ask him why do they use that term. Lon grins. "Since Dad started coaching here, he's assigned one redshirt player to be the water carrier. It's a privilege to be that player, since although you have to haul the cooler and cups out here – you used to have to take them all the way onto the field, but we got the rolling table – you get to take notes from these practices (the other redshirts aren't on campus yet) and watch what the older players do."

"Who else has been a water carrier?" I ask, scanning the list of starters.

"Let me think," he says, taking the list back and looking over it. "Actually, none of these players. Four years ago it was John Monk; he's our slot receiver. Then Loki Holihon – fourth linebacker, really solid thumper. After that Lin Mihiko – quarterback of the future right there, might give Josh a run this year. Last year it was Jim Joni; he'll take over kicking duties when Brad graduates. And now it's me. Let me write that down for you." He writes something on the list and hands it back to me.

Is Lon a RB? The words "ball carrier", "runner" or "rusher" relevant? Looking at what he's written and thinking back to what he's said, yes, he's a running back. I have no idea if those words are relevant though.

Suddenly I feel my phone vibrate. Checking the screen, I see a text from Squeaky:
Phys prof called book mean. Fball coach checked out kids book. Stereotype

Already knew that first one, but the second piece of info could be useful.

(I see no numbers in titles this time around, that's why I need to know) I think that part of the text just refers to what we already learned getting the book from Dr. Drake – she is the physics professor, and she called her book "mean." I already know that, but Squeaky doesn't know that I know that. Don't think that's needed any longer.

Do letters from h to o have some connection to the book?

Maybe The Phantom Tollboth? The name of the protagonist just so happens to be comprised of letters between h and o only as well? Alice's Adventures in Wonderland fits for the same reason....

Maybe The Phantom Tollbooth? The name of the protagonist just so happens to be comprised of letters between h and o only as well? Alice's Adventures in Wonderland fits for the same reason.... I don't see how any character in Alice fits, but the other one is right.

I ask Lon if the book is The Phantom Tollbooth. "I think that's it," he says. "As soon as the whistle blows, I'll..." He's interrupted by three whistle blasts. "Right now!" Lon pushes the cooler out to the field and I see him talking to Coach Okhill. After a few minutes, he pushes the cooler back to the sideline.

"Dad says the book is in his office; I'm just going to run up to get it." He runs up a hill to the athletic complex and comes out a couple minutes later holding a copy of The Phantom Tollbooth. "Here you go. Good luck with the rest of the books."

"Thanks," I say, and cycle away from the field.

Where should I go now?

My reasoning was that the title character's name, Alice, also contains only letters between h and o in the alphabet, as does Milo. I am curious what it the actual reasoning? "Alice" also contains an A, C, and E, which are out of range. You and Acridian had the correct reasoning: all the water carriers' names had letters from H to O (H2O is water, so "water carrier" because their names carried only the letters in that range), so you were looking for a book with a main character whose name also contained only those letters.

And visit Ruth Williams next. Naturally, Farraday Residence Hall is on the other side of campus, so it takes me a while to cycle over there. When I arrive, I nearly crash into a tall girl crossing the driveway.

"What was that about?" she asks loudly.

"Sorry," I say. "I'm just looking for Ruth Williams. My boss–"

"I'm Ruth," she interrupts. "Why are you here?"

I explain the scenario with the books.

"Yeah, one of the girls in my suite wanted it. Can't remember which; they all have asked me to rent them books at one time or another. And we're the only full suite for the summer. Tell me what the book is and I can probably remember who wanted it."

"I'm not sure," I admit, "but here's a list of what's missing."

I show her the list and she frowns. "Can you narrow it down to one?"

I shrug. "I'll try and figure it out."

Ruth sighs. "Come in. I know when I'm on the hook for coffee."

She leads me inside the building; we go up a flight of stairs and into Suite C. We pass through a common living area – I see couches, a large television set, and what looks like a clothesline hanging around the walls – and turn left into the kitchen. There's a coffeemaker all set up on the counter and Ruth starts a pot brewing.

"Now," she asks, "what do you want to know?"

Ask her about girls in the suite. Things like name, age, courses they attend, oddities....
"Well, they're all rising juniors," Ruth begins. "I'm graduating in December. Names – in 2 there's Ursula and Clara, 3 is Brit and Emily, 4's Tracy and Gwen, and 5 is Janine and Jane. Courses – don't remember what they're all taking. I know one of them is taking acting for non-majors, which is annoying because I never got to take that course. Would've taken it this summer but I have to take statistics instead." She grimaces, but goes over to the counter and pours me a cup of coffee. "Um, oddities... there really aren't too many oddities they all do. Not unless you count the common room." She smirks a little as she hands me the cup.

I sip the coffee. "What did you say their names were again?"

She sighs. "Ursula and Clara in 2, Brit and Emily 3, Tracy and Gwen 4, Janine and Jane 5."

I try to remember but I'm getting a little confused; maybe it was the long ride across campus. "Can you write all that down for me, please?"

Ruth disappears into one of the other rooms (that must be her Room 1) and emerges with a spiral notebook. She rips a page out and hands it to me. "This is the only thing I have with all their names on it. It's the TV shows they have me record while they're out at class because I know all the good torrenting sites. Actually," she says, grabbing the page back, "I need to write that down again so I don't forget."

I didn't get a good look at the page, but I noticed it only had first names on it. "What are their last names?"

She looks up, then looks back down and continues writing. Then she rips out the new page and hands that to me, keeping the old one. "Here you go."

I look at the page and scan it briefly. "Didn't all these shows start in 2009?"

Ruth looks at her own page, then looks again. "Huh. Guess that's another oddity."

The fact that all shows started in 2009 relevant? Could be. For now, though, I should try and gather more information about that other thing Ruth mentioned.

In that case, ask her to tell you more about this common room. Oh yes, that was it.

I ask, "What's the oddity in the common room?"

She smirks again. "C'mon. Grab your coffee."

I take another sip of coffee and follow her into the common room. Looking around, I see that there is indeed a clothesline hanging around the walls of the room, but hanging from it is only underwear – briefs, boxers, boxer-briefs, thongs, G-strings, and some types I can't name.

Ruth is just looking at the underwear and chuckling. "We're children at heart, aren't we?"

"What's with the underwear?" I tentatively ask?

"I'll just say that what happens in Farraday C stays in Farraday C," Ruth says, still with a sly grin.

Ask her more about the underwear. "You really want to know?" Ruth asks.

I nod. "Might be important."

"No idea how that would be important," she says, "but when..." She chooses her words carefully. "When we bring a guy over for the night, we keep a souvenir."

"...maybe that wasn't so important," I think.

"Maybe not," Ruth says. (Oops. Must have thought out loud.)

Underwear relevant to the book? I'm just going to clarify something: the characters who have books don't know that the things they do are related to the book. To them, it's just an oddity or a habit or something completely normal. So if you ask them if it's a clue to the book, they won't know what you mean by that.

But yes, in this case, the underwear is a clue to the book.

Stuck again, I step back into the kitchen for a moment and call Ryan.

"Hang on," she says, "I've got to deal with..." The rest of her sentence is drowned out by someone (or more than one) yelling, but she doesn't say anything for a couple minutes before picking up again.

"Sorry about that," she says. "Kevin's here too; Zach's at the blackjack table."

"Hi!" I hear Kevin shout into the receiver.

"So what do you need help with?" Ryan asks me.

I explain the situation at Farraday Hall.

"I know girls' dorms do some crazy things, but I've never heard of this clothesline done before," Ryan says.

"I've heard worse," Kevin adds. "Back when I was at school, one of the sororities was called the Honey Trap. They threw great parties, but any guy who stayed with one of the girls for the night would have... compromising photos taken of them. I personally know one guy who was blackmailed for a year and a half."

"That's insane," I say. "This clothesline thing has nothing on that."

"Undoubtedly," Ryan agrees. "But it's definitely not innocent either. I'm surprised Ruth thinks of it that way, since she said something about being children at heart."

"Yeah, this is definitely not the humor of a child," I agree. "Maybe there's something important in that."

We say our goodbyes and I hang up.

Returning to the common room, I notice a short bookcase in the corner by the entrance to Farraday C; I must have walked right past it and not noticed, since I was looking at the clothesline. Though it's not a large bookcase, the shelves are packed. Noticing a copy of Matilda lying flat on the top shelf, I get an idea.

"Is there any chance the book is in there?" I ask Ruth.

"Maybe," she shrugs. "That's mostly got books everyone likes to read. I keep some of mine there too. Again, tell me the book and I'll probably know who I got it for, and should be able to find it."

Are Ruth and Britanie related? Does Ruth have a TV show to record for her own?
Are all 9 involved in the clothesline thing? or only 4 of them? (in which case it could be LoTR....)

Are Ruth and Britanie related? Ruth shakes her head. "Not the first time I've lived with another unrelated Williams."
Does Ruth have a TV show to record for her own? "Nope," she says. "I don't watch much TV myself."
Are all 9 involved in the clothesline thing? or only 4 of them? "All of us," she says.
(in which case it could be LoTR....) I ask if it's The Lord of the Rings and Ruth shakes her head. "Jane's the only one who's read that, and she has her own gigantic copy."

Hi! Finally got round to reading this, and I think I'm ready to join in!

So... the behaviour is described as childlike, but is said to be darker... the underwear display/collection is a sort of trophy collection, a bit like a pig's head on a spike, perhaps?... and the girls could be said to be lords of the underwear, or lords of unzipping boys' flies to get at their underwear... Is the book Lord of the Flies? (I didn't really use the document for this reasoning, but words like 'island', 'shore', 'shark tank', chopped', 'dollshouse' etc all seem relevant.)

Well, I certainly think it's darker, but Ruth is sure it's childish, so I'd guess I should focus more on the "childish" aspect. In any case, I ask her if the book is Lord of the Flies and she nixes it. "I had to read that in high school and hated it," she says. "I won't check that out even if someone asks me to."

Aww, Lord of the Flies was a great pun!!

Right, so children's literature is out, and the all-American TV dramas list makes me think American literature is the relevant category here... If we're focusing on the 'child' aspect then Huck Finn seems the most likely candidate, and there was a Huck Finn DVD that came out in 2009, like the TV dramas. Also, the girls live in pairs, which fits with "Twain", though I think I might be forcing it a bit. Is the book Adventures of Huckleberry Finn?

If not, try examining the underwear clothesline a little more thoroughly. How many are there? What colours are they? Have they been washed? Are they wet or dry? Do they have names embroidered on them? (you never know)
Also, you mentioned you didn't get a very good look at the first sheet before Ruth took it away and gave you another sheet. Maybe you should try to have a peep at the first sheet again, in case there's something there that Ruth didn't transfer to the second sheet?

"Emily read that one a couple months ago. I remember returning it because I found a book I liked when I returned it."

"What type of books do you like?" I ask.

"Mostly poetry," Ruth says. "Especially anything that rhymes."

(Hmm, rhymes...)

If not, try examining the underwear clothesline a little more thoroughly. How many are there? What colours are they? Have they been washed? Are they wet or dry? Do they have names embroidered on them? (you never know) I'd feel really uncomfortable doing this, and I have a feeling it won't help me at all, so I'm not going to.

Also, you mentioned you didn't get a very good look at the first sheet before Ruth took it away and gave you another sheet. Maybe you should try to have a peep at the first sheet again, in case there's something there that Ruth didn't transfer to the second sheet? Ruth shows me the sheet, though she seems reluctant to do so, like I'm taking up her time. The only difference is that she didn't include last names on that one.

Rhymes? Is it Shakespeare then? Children... underwear... lovers... is it Romeo and Juliet?

By the way, could you just confirm with Ruth that she lives alone in C-1? She hasn't mentioned a roomie, though everyone else seems to have one. Is this just because she's a senior and they are all juniors?

*Pulls hair out* You came in during probably the hardest clue – sorry!
Rhymes? Is it Shakespeare then? Children... underwear... lovers... is it Romeo and Juliet? I ask Ruth and she again says no. "Clara's the Shakespeare reader. She's actually taking a Shakespeare class right now, and I know that's one of her assigned books, so she has that."

I think back to the clues – childish, rhyme, underwear. A children's book in rhyme that involves underwear? A childish rhyme about underwear? Hmm...

By the way, could you just confirm with Ruth that she lives alone in C-1? She hasn't mentioned a roomie, though everyone else seems to have one. Is this just because she's a senior and they are all juniors? "It's because I'm the RA," she says. "JAG-C RAs live in their own room."

Children, rhyming, underwear. I've just spent some time researching, and I now know far too many underwear songs/rhymes than I'll ever need, from "God bless my underwear", to "I have lost my underwear", to "So, so suck my toe," which has an underwear ending. Still no closer to the answer though...

On a related note, I had an underwear-related scrund when I was a child. You know that Bananas in Pyjamas song -

"Bananas in pyjamas are coming down the stairs,
Bananas in pyjamas are coming down in pairs,
Bananas in pyjamas are chasing teddy bears,
Cos on Tuesdays they all try to catch them unawares!"

I always thought the last line was, "Cos on Tuesdays they all try to catch their underwear!"

There you go - nothing to do with the puzzle answer, but thought that might amuse you.

I think through kids' rhymes I know, but can't find any with the word "underwear." Maybe it's a synonym for underwear – underpants, undies, panties, boxers, briefs, boxer-briefs.... those last ones aren't childish enough...

Is it the one with London and France? I remember that rhyme now – "I see London, I see France, I see someone's underpants!"

Never heard of that rhyme before!! If it is the London and France one, is the book Tale of Two Cities? I ask Ruth about it and she seems uncertain. "That could be it – I know Brit asked me about that recently but I don't know if it's a library copy – let me check." She heads into C-3 for a minute and comes out with a copy of A Tale of Two Cities. "Yep, this is your book. Saw the thing with all the checkouts on the inside cover. Here you go."

I take it, thank her for the help and coffee, and head out.

Where to next?

Also, "France" and "underpants" don't rhyme... Americans! =P And we spell everything wrong too...

Hooray!! Let's visit Lori Nesbit next! I'm in the mood for a bit of art... I cycle back to the arts center. I can hear the Carousel rehearsal still going on as I walk by, but I instead go upstairs. As I am about to knock on the door of Room 216, it opens, and I'm suddenly face to face with a woman covered in paint. We both apologize and she introduces herself as Lori Nesbit. I explain why I'm here.

"Oh yes, I remember that. Kennedy, one of my students, said she wanted to use it for her sculpture, but I can't remember what it was. Now if you'll excuse me – just don't touch the art!" She sweeps out of the room.

I cautiously walk in and notice eight sculptures against the back wall, on a platform supported by several stacks of books. On a table in the middle of the room is a large wood panel half-painted with a triangular fractal pattern. There's a paint palette and brush lying on one unpainted corner of the panel, next to a cup of dirty water.

The door opens and Ms. Nesbit comes right back to the wood panel. "I'm finishing the background for displaying those sculptures, but if you need any help, just ask." She starts painting the panel again.

What should I ask?

Could you describe the eight sculptures in a bit more detail for us? Anything interesting to observe?

Talk to Lori:

"That is a truly beautiful triangular pattern, Ms Nesbit. Could you tell me a bit more about it? Where did you get your inspiration from? Also, those eight sculptures are simply genius. Were they done by your talented students? I'm sure you have a document with their names, and perhaps the names of their sculptures lying somewhere about. Could I take a look at it? I just like collecting documents. Hobby of mine, you see."

Could you describe the eight sculptures in a bit more detail for us? Anything interesting to observe?

From left to right, the sculptures are:
-A man who appears to be falling out of the sky, with feathers attached to his arms
-Two men pointing guns at each other beside a car, while a third man wearing a policeman's uniform lies on the ground
-A crashed helicopter; there appear to be human limbs sticking out of broken windows
-(There's a gap in the scupltures here)
-A sleek-looking car crashing into the driver's side of another car
-A gruff-looking man standing over a prone woman in military-style uniform, holding a gun
-An ATV-like vehicle traveling off the edge of a cliff, with people in armor-like uniform in the driver's and passenger's seats
-A boxing ring with one man kneeling over another, who is lying flat
-A large bull with a fire under it

Talk to Lori:

"That is a truly beautiful triangular pattern, Ms Nesbit. Could you tell me a bit more about it? Where did you get your inspiration from?" "Thank you," she says. "I have always liked fractals as background patterns. The students came up with a theme for their sculptures – I always let my classes choose the theme – so I pattern the background similarly."

"Also, those eight sculptures are simply genius. Were they done by your talented students?" "Oh yes," she says. "They'll be exhibited in the front of the art center next week. There are actually nine, but Kennedy's is still in the kiln."

"I'm sure you have a document with their names, and perhaps the names of their sculptures lying somewhere about. Could I take a look at it? I just like collecting documents. Hobby of mine, you see." She lifts a corner of the wood panel, then another, before pulling out a piece of paper. "I don't have the names of their sculptures, but I do have descriptions," she says. "You can have this one. Kennedy hasn't sent me her description, so I'll have to update the list anyway."

Sorry for delaying the puzzle, I came onto the London/France rhyme long ago, but I completely mistook the Dickens book for something else, so I didn't see the relevance.....my bad! No worries – nice job picking up that clue!

"Ms Nesbit, could you tell me Kennedy's first name?" "Kennedy is her first name," she says, a bit confused. "Her last name is Klosterman."
"I know you don't have the description for her work yet, but do you know anything about what she has sculpted?" She shakes her head. "Unfortunately I don't remember, but it had to do with the book she asked me to check out for her."
"Also, I've noticed that the sculpture descriptions on the paper you've given me, and the order in which they are sitting there now, don't match up. Would you like me to rearrange these sculptures to fit the order in which they appear in the document? Or is this arrangement the correct one?" "Don't touch the art!" she says, alarmed. "But no, this isn't the final arrangement. This is just how the students decided to put them after they each finished their piece. The final arrangement will be in chronological order."

She gestures for the paper back, and after I give it to her, she writes something down and hands it back. "This is how they are arranged now."

"Also, about the theme, I'd say it was to do with death, perhaps irony, perhaps shattered dreams? What would you say to that?" "Death, yes," Lori says, "but it was more specific than that."

Violent death? "It had to do with death, yes, but I think I remember Robert saying something about the causes of death."

Ask also if the number 3 has a particular meaning. "Not to me, no. Why?"

Say to Lori: ""Kennedy Klosterman". I like that, I like the 'k' sounds. Do, you know, Ms Nesbit, if Kennedy has a penchant for alliteration? Do you think she would like a book with alliteration in the title? Also, it seems to me that the causes of death here are all man-made; they all died at the hands of another, or through their own actions (I'm thinking of James Dean here, although there has been some speculation that it was not him at the wheel at all). Is this about right?"

Say to Lori:
"'Kennedy Klosterman.' I like that, I like the 'k' sounds." "So do I," Lori says. "It's a very nice name."
"Do, you know, Ms Nesbit, if Kennedy has a penchant for alliteration?" "I think she sees it as a bonus," Lori says. "She enjoys alliterative things but also plenty of things that don't have alliteration."
"Do you think she would like a book with alliteration in the title?" "Probably, but I don't think that would be the deciding factor as to whether she'd read it."
"Also, it seems to me that the causes of death here are all man-made; they all died at the hands of another, or through their own actions (I'm thinking of James Dean here, although there has been some speculation that it was not him at the wheel at all). Is this about right?" When I say "they all died at the hands of another," a lightbulb seems to come on over Lori's head. "It's along those lines, yes," she says. "And there was something about the 'another' that they had in common, but I can't figure out what."

Ask if Kennedy's sculpture theme has to do with a revenge. "I don't remember," Lori apologizes.

Suddenly I hear a ping from across the room. Lori walks over to a computer, saying, "Might be an important email," and sits down for a moment.

"This is interesting," Lori says. "Gloria said she urgently needed to update the description of her sculpture. Maybe that will help you." She types for a little while, then stands back up. "I'm printing two updated copies. One's for you."

"Thank you!" I say, as Lori leaves the room. She's back in two minutes with a new sheet of paper. I compare Gloria's old description to the new one and write down the change.

"Ms Nesbit, so enthralled am I by these sculptures, that I've gone away to do a bit more research on the ones I'm not too familiar with. It strikes me that in many of these scenes, the victim was killed by their own possession - Sniper Wolf was killed with her own gun, as was John Frey, and of course you could say James Dean was killed by his own car, Perillos of Athens was killed by his own bull, and so on. Is this the theme?"

"Really? Perillos? He was killed by his own bull. He made a bull for the purpose of torturing others, but he ended up perishing within it instead. Rather ironic, I suppose. Does that ring any more bells? Anyway, I'll keep thinking of the theme, but I just wanted to mention something to you. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Bob Ewell tries to attack Scout and Jem. Boo Radley turns up to save the day, and in the scuffle, Bob Ewell is killed by his own knife, the very knife he was about to use on Scout and Jem. I just thought this scene might fit in well with the others. Do you think that might be Kennedy's sculpture? If not, do you think I should have a go at creating that sculpture? Being surrounded by all this art has inspired me."

Does that ring any more bells?" Lori scratches her head with the back of one of her paintbrushes. "Um... I remember Alexis shouting, 'Brazen bull! Perfect!' and the other students agreeing that was a very good idea. And I can't remember what the thing about James Dean's car was. But it wasn't that they died by their own invention, I'm pretty sure of that."

"Anyway, I'll keep thinking of the theme, but I just wanted to mention something to you. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird, Bob Ewell tries to attack Scout and Jem. "No, I don't think that was it, but I do remember that scene from the book very well," she says. "A very moving climax."

"If not, do you think I should have a go at creating that sculpture? Being surrounded by all this art has inspired me." "Aren't you working?" she says. (Oh, right, I'd forgotten about that.) "I can't let you do that now, but if you'd like to come by during office hours when you aren't working, you're welcome to sculpt."

Okay, will her sculpture feature someone killed by fire or its variation? All the other scupltures feature someone dying by fire/variation of it (being roasted, killed by gunfire or killed by fire set there by sun rays)

Animals?
Antony and Cleopatra?
As far as I am concerned, it's either Moby Dick, Lord of the Rings or Jane Eyre.

Suddenly it clicks – all of the sculptures could be interpreted as deaths by animal, which would explain why Gloria changed the Icarus description from "the sun" to "the sun's rays."

"The theme – is it death by animal?"

Lori stops painting. "That's it, yes! Let me see that list of yours–" I show her the list of books, but she frowns. "It could be a few of them. Do you know which?"

I'm about to make a suggestion when my phone pings. I check and see another text from Squeaky:
Art prof had Shaksper

That narrows my options to one.

"I think the book must be Antony and Cleopatra," I tell her, and she puts her brush down on the palette.

"You're absolutely right, and now that you say it, I know where it is." She walks into another room and comes out with the book. "Left on a shelf by the kiln." She hands the book over and I thank her.

"By the way," she adds, "feel free to come back if you want to make that sculpture!"

Where to now?

Visit Tim Tripp next.

I head over to the Alumni Office. Walking inside, I see an older man with thinning white hair sitting behind the front desk. "May I help you?" he asks.

"I'm looking for Tim Tripp," I say.

The man stands up and extends his hand. "That's me," he says, and we shake hands. "How might I help?"

I explain the situation with the library books.

"Ah yes, I remember checking that book out and reading it. It was–" He stops and thinks. "I'm sorry, I've completely blanked on what it was."

"Do you remember anything about it?"

"No," he says. "I remember thinking of two of my favorite students when I checked it out, but nothing more than that."

Clearly I need to ask more questions...

Ask him for info about his two favorite students (their names, and any other details about them) "Well, they're not my two favorite students, but they are two of my favorites," Tim says. "These two were a year apart, and the moment he walked on campus I had him paired with her in my eye. The idioms just confirmed it."

"Idioms?" I ask.

"Right, give me a moment," he says, walking back into his office. He returns with a piece of paper that he hands me. "These are my favorite students over the years. Not many students spend a lot of time here in the alumni office, but every few years a student and I will become friends. I stay in touch with them still.

"Anyway, I ask my favorite students, upon graduation, to tell me their favorite idiom. These two had been friends throughout college but they hadn't dated, and they both gave me idioms about a cat. I knew they were going to end up together. What happens a year after graduation? I get an invitation to their wedding. They married, hyphenated last names and all, and we all get together whenever they're in the area."

I look at the list he gave me. "I didn't realize you'd been at the school this long."

"Just over 40 years," he says.

Ask Squeaky for help. I don't know if Squeaky's going to be helpful, but I decide to step out of the office for a second and call Ryan. She answers and, after our greetings, I tell her my current situation.

"There's always one faculty member who can instantly spot a romance," Ryan says, laughing. "What did you say their names were again?"

"They were–" I stop. "You know, I asked about their names, and he never mentioned them. The only thing he said was that they hyphenated at marriage."

"Their names should be on the sheet he gave you, right?" Ryan says. "Maybe that's important."

"Thanks," I say. "I'll call if I get stuck again."

We say goodbye and hang up.

Tim smiles and nods. "Of course. Marion-Evans, Mary Ann Evans, I ought to have remembered that." He heads into his office and comes out after a few minutes with the book. "Couldn't find it in my big bookcase for a moment, but here it is."

I thank him and head out.

I had exactly the same idea.

Visit Nick Vosters next.
In the English building, I find the classroom with "Dr. Nick Vosters" on the nameplate and knock.

"Come in!" a voice inside yells, so I open the door and walk in.

Inside this classroom, the walls are lined with bookcases, each shelf packed with what must be volumes of poetry. Dr. Vosters (at least that's who I assume it is) is erasing something off the blackboard – I spot the words "DD METER" before they are wiped clean.

"Excuse me?" I say tentatively.

He turns around and reaches out to shake with a hand covered in chalk dust. "Dr. Nick Vosters, pleased to meet you. And you are?"

Wiping the chalk off my hand, I explain who I am and why I'm here.

"Oh, right, the book!" He thinks for a moment. "I checked it out to give examples for the assignment I just finished grading. But the title isn't coming to me, and I should know it."

OK then... what now?

Ask him more about 'DD Meter'. He looks at me incredulously. "Don't you know what a double dactyl is?" When I shake my head, he speaks excitedly: "It's the best form of humorous poetry ever! You can have your limericks; give me a double dactyl any day. In fact, every year I do a double dactyl contest with my students."

"Contest?" I ask.

He nods, flipping through papers on his desk. "I just finished judging them all. Here's the top three," he says, handing me a sheet of paper. "I was really impressed by the first one there. He made a non-humorous one; that's unusual. Well, it's unusual for a good one to be non-humorous; there's plenty of bad ones that aren't funny at all."

I look over the paper. "These are pretty good."

"That's why they're the top three," he says, grinning. "Oh, and don't let anyone else see that. The class doesn't learn the results until tomorrow."

Ask your associates again. I call Ryan, but when she picks up, she says, "I've got to see to a disturbance on the floor. Here's Kevin."

I hear her hand the phone over and Kevin's voice comes across the line. "What's up?"

"I've hit a wall," I say, and describe what I've seen in the poetry classroom.

"Double dactyls, now I'm not familiar with those," Kevin says, after I've finished. "You know how to write one?"

"Not at all," I admit.

"It's a shame you didn't see the rules before they got erased," he says. "Maybe you should ask him that. And what did you say he needed the book for?"

I think back. "Um... examples."

"Maybe that could be useful too," Kevin says. "I'm gonna go see how Zack is doing at dice. He says he's good, but I think he's craps at it!" He laughs a bit at his own joke.

I groan. "Hang up the phone, Kevin."

"As you say! Ryan should be back in a few minutes if you need more help. Bye!" He hangs up.

(sorry, but I am clueless with this type) Don't worry; asking questions is exactly what you're supposed to be doing!

Ask him about the rules to writing those. "Glad you're interested!" he says, taking up a piece of chalk and writing on the board as he talks.

"A double dactyl is eight lines long, in a dactyllic meter throughout – LA-da-da, LA-da-da, and so on. Each line is six syllables long, except the fourth and eighth, which are four and end on an accented syllable – LA-da-da LA. Those two lines rhyme.

"The first line is nonsense syllables – traditionally 'higgledy piggledy' or 'jiggery pokery' or something like that, but can play on the subject of the poem. The second line is a name. And at least one line, usually the sixth, must be one six-syllable word."

On the board, he's written the following:

DD METER
Higgledy piggledy
Name of a personage

Ask him where in the book they have to look for examples: title? author? characters? how it is written?
And example for what: name of a personage with dactyllic meter? Hexasyllabical word? dactyllic meter lines? Rhymes?

Ask him where in the book they have to look for examples: title? author? characters? how it is written? "Well, the second line is almost always a name," he says. "But theirs were historical, not based on a book. My examples came from the book."
And example for what: name of a personage with dactyllic meter? From what he's saying, I'd guess his examples were of characters with didactyllic names. Hexasyllabical word? dactyllic meter lines? Rhymes?

Excellent! Thank Dr Vosters and tell him that if he ever needs anyone to have double dactyl fun with, he knows where to look. But warn him that your services are in demand - you still have to do that sculpture you promised Ms Nesbit, after all.

There's only one person left to visit, so head over to Dragam Science Hall and look for Odin.

Excellent! Thank Dr Vosters and tell him that if he ever needs anyone to have double dactyl fun with, he knows where to look. But warn him that your services are in demand - you still have to do that sculpture you promised Ms Nesbit, after all. He thanks me back. "Always glad to see another fan of weightless poetry."

There's only one person left to visit, so head over to Dragam Science Hall and look for Odin.

Back in Dragam, I knock on the door of Room 102, which has Dr. Haverill's nameplate on the door, but I don't get a response. I can hear loud piano music coming from inside the room, which explains the lack of response. I try the knob and it turns, so I open the door and let myself in.

In here, the music is louder and I identify it as Tom Lehrer's "The Elements." Looking around, I see someone in a white lab coat washing beakers in a sink, singing along. Beside the sink is a CD player, a stack of papers, and a jar with what looks like pencils in it.

"Dr. Haverill?" I ask loudly.

The man at the sink turns around, surprised, and hits a button on the CD player, turning off the music. "I'm he. And you?"

For the eighth time, I explain the situation with the library books.

"I'm afraid I can't recall which book I got," he says. "Trying to focus on cleaning this lab equipment and grading these papers, so I'm not sure I can devote the brain space to remembering which book I borrowed. If you can figure it out, though, I'm sure I'll remember where it is."

Harumph, then. Where should I start?

"Do you need any help with cleaning the equipment, Dr Haverill? I'm very interested in chemistry, when I'm not sculpting, writing poetry, or examining male underwear. What have you been using these beakers for? I could also help you with grading papers, if you want. Or, we could talk about the music you were just listening to. Whatever takes your fancy. I have time."

"Do you need any help with cleaning the equipment, Dr Haverill? I'm very interested in chemistry, when I'm not sculpting, writing poetry, or examining male underwear."
"I appreciate the offer, but I'm getting it clean myself, thank you."

"What have you been using these beakers for?"
"For the students' latest assignment," he says. "Each student was given an unidentified household chemical and had to use various laboratory tests to determine which chemical he or she had."

"What chemicals were there?" I ask.

"These," he says, riffling through the stack and handing me a sheet of paper. "That's a photocopy of the answer key."

"I could also help you with grading papers, if you want."
"I've already graded them," he says, gesturing at the stack of papers and the jar of pencils.

"Or, we could talk about the music you were just listening to. Whatever takes your fancy. I have time."
Dr. Haverill stops washing the beaker in his hands and turns to face me. "Tom Lehrer was a satirical genius, one underappreciated today," he says. "As a doctor of chemistry I of course love 'The Elements,' though all his other songs are incredible works too. I make all my students learn 'The Elements'."

"I've heard the song, but I don't know the words by heart," I admit.

"You must!" He opens a cabinet and hands me another sheet of paper. "Here are the lyrics; learn them well. On the other side is a periodic table, so you can learn about each element as you hear it sung."

...and take a closer look at the jar...
Pulling some of the pencils out, I see they are all colored pencils in various shades of the rainbow.

"Why so many colors?" I ask.

"The highest grades get the longest wavelengths," he says.

"The highest grades get the longest wavelengths, you say? I happen to know that red has the longest wavelength. Do you give assignments with an A grade a large red A? Like in The Scarlet Letter?" "Yes, I do. Oh wait, you meant the book The Scarlet Letter. Yes, that is the book," Dr. Haverill says. "How foolish of me to forget."

He opens another cabinet, this one full of books, and pulls out a thin volume, tossing it over to me. "Here you go. Now please depart, as I must complete my work." He turns the CD player back on, blasting Tom Lehrer throughout the room, and returns to washing the beakers.

* * * *

Cycling back to the library, I realize that even though I've found the eight books, I'm no closer to realizing who has the other 32. Everyone I saw had a stash of books – Dr. Drake's Rube Goldberg machine, Coach Okhill's blocking sleds, and lots of bookcases.

I lock my bike outside the library and walk in, where Ms. Kyle greets me. "Have you found everything?"

"I found the eight books checked out individually," I say, pulling them out of my drawstring bag and placing them on the front desk. "But i have no idea who has the other 32."

Rhonda nods. "That's all right; I'm sure you'll figure that out. Nice job with the other eight. While you're thinking the 32 over–" She reaches under the desk and hands me a stack of papers. "–you can look over and grade these tests. We have elementary school students in the library once a week for reading and grammar lessons. If you need somewhere quieter, we have plenty of quiet rooms on the second floor. The JAG-C students use them for studying."

I take the tests. "Okay." I pull out my phone to check what time it is and notice that my battery is almost dead. "Shoot! Ms. Kyle, my phone is dying and I don't have a charger. Do you have one?"

She nods. "Just leave it here and I'll plug it in."

I hand her my phone and say, "I'll be back after I've graded the tests."

Walking upstairs, I notice most of the quiet rooms are closed, but one of them has its door cracked slightly open. I pull the door open and walk inside.

The room is a good room for studying – there's a blank whiteboard on one wall, a couch and two comfortable armchairs around a long table, and a computer on a small table near the door.

As I turn on the computer, I notice the door start to swing shut. I hurry over to try and stop it, but in my haste I drop all the tests in the direction of the closing door. Before I can get there, it slams shut and clicks.

I try the knob – locked. Fantastic.

I notice that, while most of the tests landed outside, one page of one of them is caught in the crack in the door. I pull on it and it comes free, tearing away from the rest of the test.

Well, I can't grade anything right now. Clearly my task is to escape this locked room. If I can figure out who has the other 32 books, all the better.

I take inventory: I still have my drawstring bag with all the collected documents. I also have two mechanical pencils for taking notes.

I notice that the computer has turned on and is asking me to input a username and password. Fortunately, the username ("Fagin") and password ("Oliver") are taped to the monitor, so I log in.

Among the icons on the desktop is "Door Controls." That seems obvious, so I double-click it.

Another password screen has come up, and below it is a question: "WHAT COLOR IS THE OUTSIDE OF THIS ROOM?"

Huh? This room doesn't have an outside...

What a pickle we've got ourselves in. Have a look around the whiteboard - are there any markers or anything we could use to write on it with? Are there any other icons on the computer that look like they might be of interest? Anything else around the room we should know about? For instance, anything on the long table? Anything on the small one, other than the computer? Have a rummage round the couch and armchairs; see if anything has maybe fallen down the sides or back.

What a pickle we've got ourselves in. You can say that again...
Have a look around the whiteboard - are there any markers or anything we could use to write on it with? There are three black dry-erase markers on the whiteboard tray.
Are there any other icons on the computer that look like they might be of interest? Not really.
Anything else around the room we should know about? Doesn't look like it.
For instance, anything on the long table? Squat. But I've spilled out all the documents onto it so I can look at them all at once.
Anything on the small one, other than the computer? Nada.
Have a rummage round the couch and armchairs; see if anything has maybe fallen down the sides or back. Thirty-four cents behind the cushions, but that's all.

(just trying something I thought some days ago....)
Well....those documents are full of numbers...almost all persons listed there can be associated to a number (which I tried to work out as clues for the other situations to no avail!)
So.....25 should be important here, but we have two people with 25: Morgan Crowley and Lon Okhill II. Don't know the first, but the second seams to point to the Coach...

That's a very good thought; I think those numbers will be important. But 25 isn't the only duplicate number, so I'm not sure if "duplicates" are the key.

(it was not that 25 was repeated....but that 25 was the only number on the last page grammar test...but ok, that's not the way numbers enter in it)

Number 32 seams to lead to nothing too (we have Amos Downs and Noel Foster with 32)
Maybe those without a number? Hannah Smith, Xander Altressi and Nora Walters?

The only thing I can think right now, looking at the test page, is that it's not the number that matters, but something else on the paper that tells me which numbers are important. I know the numbers are associated with names, and that seems useful....

RECAP & HINTS:

You've collected several documents from each of the teachers and rooms you've visited. Now you have to use them somehow to make a logical train of thought leading you to the password that will get you out of this room.

Many of these documents have names (mainly of students) that have numbers associated with them.

You just received a document that is the last page of a grammar test, and the correct answer is "C. First names."

The documents link is here: http://bit.ly/1ZOMmNw

I'm sure this is wrong, but just thought I should give it a go before you think we've all abandoned your puzzle!

Try "silver" as the answer to "what colour is the outside of this room". It's the only colour that is related to C's and first names (Corrine Clementine, a silver Porsche...)

The only thing I can think of is HTML colour codes/colour hexes/RGB values, so let's try this for now.

I've gone through all the documents and have discovered that each document has one person whose first name begins with C, and they all have a number associated with it. I'm going to list them in the order listed on page 2, since the order of the documents was just based on what order we visited them in, which was arbitrary.

So we have:
Catch 22 - Celia - 28
Matilda - Carrie - 17
Scarlet Letter - Carlos - 4
Antony and Cleopatra - Corrine - 53
The Phantom Tollbooth - Carter - 51
Silas Marner - Cassandra - 84
R & J - Clark - 44
A Tale of Two Cities - Clara - 12

Which gives us: 281745351844412

I've been playing around with colour hex #281745 (blue), but I haven't found anything to account for the remaining numbers: 351844412, since the RGB value is 40, 23, 69, nothing to do with our numbers at all. Perhaps C28174? But again, its RGB values don't match our remaining numbers. Hmmm. Whatever shall we do, Maria? I do think we're on to something though. We'll get you out of that room soon. Very soon...

The order listed on that page is alphabetical by last name; I'm not sure if that particular order is significant.

So we have:
Catch 22 - Celia - 28
Matilda - Carrie - 17
Scarlet Letter - Carlos - 4
Antony and Cleopatra - Corrine - 53
The Phantom Tollbooth - Carter - 51

I like the idea of taking the numbers associated with all of the first names beginning with C, especially since there's only one on each document, so I've written them down on the test sheet.

However, I don't know much about RGB or hex color codes, so I'd rather try a different track, something more closely related to the documents.

Hmmm... could we try something, Maria? Take the 'C' number associated with each document and count that number of letters into the document. For instance, for 28: Celia Landover, could you have a look at the Physics sheet and make a note of which is the 28th letter in that document? And for 17: Carrie Pipperidge, have a look at the Drama sheet and see which is the 17th letter. Do the same for the rest of them and let me know what letters you get. Sorry for not doing this myself, but I'm in a hurry and really wanted to try this idea before I go!

...finished with the sentence? =D

OK. Leaving them in the same order and counting only letters I got INDHTIHR, which doesn't seem to mean anything, and I don't think it anagrams to anything either. If I include numbers I get INDHRWHE, which is just as useless. I don't think this is the right line of thinking.

28-->Nickel-->Nick
17-->Chlorine-->Lori
4-->Berylium-->Beryl
53-->Iodine-->Odin
51-->Antimony-->Tim
84-->Polonium-->Lon
44-->Ruthenium-->Ruth

The order in which they appear in "The Element" song? That sounds logical. I've arranged them in that order; now what clue is there here...?

Looking at these new notes, I note I've already used logic with the numbers, elements, and first names. So maybe I should focus on the last names.

Hmm, I had this idea a while back but dismissed it. Your musing about the last names has given me the confidence to suggest it, so here goes:

The first letters of their last names, in the elements order, spell TVWHEDON. Joss Whedon, perhaps? In Suite C's TV recording list, Dollhouse is by him. Do you think Clara Viedlang borrowed the rest of the books, maybe? Or maybe not, since Squeaky (was that her name?) said she recognised the person as one of our previous pals. Ruth could have borrowed them for her I suppose. What do you think of all this?

Ruth could have borrowed them for her I suppose. What do you think of all this? Maybe, but right now I'm still trying to figure out the color password for the computer, and I don't know how that leads me to a color.
Dollhouse, Doll House, dall haus... the more I think it over and say it out loud, the less it looks like a word. Weird.

You know, it would be nice if Valley of the Dolls was on the list, because then "Dollhouse" might hint to a house in that book. But I haven't read Valley of the Dolls anyway, so...

It certainly would be! Alas, it is not. I hope you're doing alright, a month's a long time to be stuck in a room without food or water.

Let's take a stab at this, then. Looking down the list of books, the only one I can think of where a house plays a very large role, almost taking on a personality of its own, is Beloved. The house is located on Bluestone Road, so perhaps the "outside of this room" is...blue?
I don't know why it would be a "dollhouse" though, or why "dollhouse" didn't seem like a word to you. And as Poirot keeps telling us, if one piece of the puzzle doesn't fit, the solution's probably wrong. Oh dear.

I don't know why it would be a "dollhouse" though Well, I guess if it were Valley of the Dolls or something, it would be a "Doll house," where it's two words. Something like that. or why "dollhouse" didn't seem like a word to you. Have you ever had it where you look at a word long enough that it stops looking like a word to you? That happens to me all the time, especially with words like "voice." I look at it long enough and it doesn't look like a word any longer. That's what happened when I kept looking at the word "Dollhouse"; I kept seeing it as "dall haus" or other such spellings. And as Poirot keeps telling us, if one piece of the puzzle doesn't fit, the solution's probably wrong. Oh dear. Yeah, "blue" didn't work, so...

I don't have a copy of Matilda with me, and googling "Matilda house Roald Dahl" was completely useless, but having spent ages trawling through the internet, I'm pleased to say I've finally got the answer.

So Matilda's family home is called "Cosy Nook" - no colours there - but Trunchbull's house is called... (drum roll)... The Red House!!! Quick, type "red" as the password!

I type in "red" and the computer beeps... and another password prompt comes up. Great.

There's a question under this one too: "ON THE SAME LINES, WHAT DID NOT TRAP YOU HERE? (seven letters)"

This had better be a shorter thought process than the last one. I guess I'd better start where I am now – the Red House, the Trunchbull, and Miss Honey.

*pompously* I believe, Maria, that vinegar did not trap you here. Right, "honey catches more flies than vinegar!"

I type "vinegar" in the password box, press ENTER, and hear a click from the door. I turn the knob and push, and the door swings open!

"Vinegar" deduction added to Maria's notes: http://bit.ly/1ZOMmNw

I start to head downstairs but almost immediately run into Rhonda Kyle, who was running up the stairs.

"You got out!" she says. "I just realized the doors lock automatically and I never gave you the passwords to open them."

"Don't worry about it," I respond. "I've got out. I wasn't able to grade those tests though."

"Forget the tests," she says. "I can grade those tomorrow."

I look over her shoulder and notice two men have followed her up the stairs. "Who are they?" I ask her.

She looks at them. "They're both campus security – A.J. Solomon and Scott Marston. I told them that whoever has the books might be uncooperative, so they might have to help get the fine."

"Depends on who it is," I say.

Rhonda nods. "You do know who it is, right?"

"I–" I don't even get a word in before my phone rings. I check – it's Ryan. "I've got to take this. Can you hold on for a moment?"

Rhonda agrees, and I head back to the second floor and answer the phone.

"Almost done," I say. "I just had to escape a locked room."

"Of course you did," Ryan says, laughing.

"What exactly happened?" I hear Zack ask on the other end of the line.

I explain the situation, from taking the tests into the room to figuring out the last password.

"You always end up in these weird situations," I hear Kevin say. (Guess everyone's there!) "So if vinegar didn't trap you there, does that make you the fly?"

"Very funny. I–" Something occurs to me. "You all are geniuses!"

"Really? That's new to me," they all say at once, then burst out laughing.

"I've got to finish this," I say. "I'll call you when it's done."

"You got it!" Ryan says, then hangs up.

I head back down the stairs to where Rhonda and the security guys are.

"So who has the books?" Rhonda asks.

Now what was it that just occurred to me...?

Fly, fly. Were you thinking of Lord of the Flies? I have a feeling it might be Ruth Williams. I suspected her before because of the whole Dollhouse thing, and her last name is Williams, which puts one in mind of William Golding. And then there's that whole underwear Lord of the Flies pun I enjoyed before (and still do).
Any of these match up with your thoughts?

You're the fly...caught up in Charlotte's web? But who is Charlotte? No, there isn't a Charlotte. It doesn't have to do with the books, I don't think; being called a fly reminded me of being called a fly before...

Oh yes, Dr Agnes Drake called you a pestering fly. Do you think she's the book thief? Yes, that's what I was trying to remember! (I should really re-read The Book Thief sometime soon, but anyway...)

****SPOILER****

"I'm pretty sure Dr. Drake has the books," I tell Rhonda.

"Wouldn't surprise me, she's got a very acerbic personality," she says, "but why do you think it's her?"

"She had books in her office used to make a Rube Goldberg machine, and she wouldn't let me look at them at all," I say. "Plus she called me a pestering fly."

"What does that have to do with it?" one of the officers says, looking at a piece of paper. (A list of the missing books, I think.)

"Um... can we just go get the books back?" I ask. (I don't think explaining my document logic would help at all.)

Ms. Kyle nods, and we all head over to Dragam (they drive, I cycle). I walk up to Dr. Drake's classroom and the others are already there. Officer Marston knocks on the door, and when the professor opens it, he doesn't even let her start talking.

"We'd like to take a look in your office," he tells her.

"You can't do that!" she protests. "You'll break the machine."

"We'll be careful," he says, guiding her to the other side of the room while Officer Solomon goes to open the office door. He does so carefully, jostling a length of track on the other side of the door, then makes his way inside, glancing at the list of books.

After a few seconds, he calls out, "They're all here."

I look in through the cracked-open door and can make out a few of the titles, stacked up to form stairs with dominoes on top of them. Dr. Drake yells again, "I'm not going to jail! And you're going to break the machine!"

"You don't have to go to jail," says Rhonda. "You just have to pay a fine."

"Oh," she says, as if the thought never occurred to her.

I turn back. "Don't you have extra science books all around this classroom?" I ask her. "Why can't you use those?"

"Oh," she says again.

Rhonda calls me out into the hall for a moment. "I promise not all work days are like this. I know this wasn't what you were looking for here, but I'd still like to keep you working here. We don't have to lock you in long-term yet if that's not what you want."

"I'd still like to figure out what I want," I say, "so... thank you!" We shake hands.

"Get some rest," she says. "I'll see you at 10 tomorrow."

I walk back downstairs and am about to get on my bike when my phone rings – it's Ryan again. I answer.

"You done yet?" she says.

"Yep," I say. "And I've got a story for the three of you."

"Get down here. Late-night dinner for four. My treat."

"Sounds great. See you soon."

I hang up, pocket my cell phone, and cycle away.

****THE END****

Thank you all for taking part in this trilogy! For this puzzle, thanks go to:
-Irishelk and JuifErrant for asking questions early,
-Jenny for helping get this puzzle rolling,
-Acridian for some good deductions throughout,
-and Jackie for taking this on halfway through and not stopping until the solution!

(The title had multiple meanings: "When I Make Enough Money" might be what Maria thinks when confronted with one of these puzzles – "when I make enough money, I won't have to do this again" – but it's also a lyric in a song from
Carousel ("When the Children are Asleep").)

Well done!
