[klondike mary] Raggedy running

Postby klondike mary » Sat Jan 23, 2021 5:25 pm

Inspired by Admin's puzzle, but quite different.
Martha is dressing for a very important occasion. She puts on underwear that is clean and decent, but certainly not remotely sexy. Then she puts on a dress that is stylish and elegant.
What is going on?

Martha: HAF?

Is the occasion one where she expects to meet others? One she expects to be televised? Photos to be taken? Does she expect her dress to be seen by others? Her underwear?

Will the occasion take place outsides? In a room? In some kind of tent or similar structure? In a vehicle? Underground? In the air? In space?

Very important: For her? For others who will be present? For others who will not be present? For humankind alltogether?

Is the underwear of a kind many people would wear regularily? Wear on certain occasions? Something you would only wear under very special circumstances? Something unique? Same for the dress.

Martha: HAF? Yes.
Is the occasion one where she expects to meet others? Yes. One she expects to be televised? Yopish.Photos to be taken? Does she expect her dress to be seen by others? Yes to both. Her underwear? NO.

Will the occasion take place outsides? In a room? Yessish. No to all the rest. In some kind of tent or similar structure? In a vehicle? Underground? In the air? In space?

Very important: For her? Yessish. For others who will be present? More so for this. For others who will not be present? Yope or n.r. For humankind alltogether? Not much importance in the great scheme of things, no.

Is the underwear of a kind many people would wear regularily? Yope. Wear on certain occasions? Yessish. Something you would only wear under very special c If you had occasion to wear it, it would not always be on a special occasion.

Is it sports underwear? does she plan to do her workout right after the event where she needs the dress?
or maybe: is the underwear in fact a swimsuit?

Cotillion/debutante ball relevant?
Martha is dressing for a very important occasion. --> is Martha's job relevant? Is the event related to: fashion? a speech she is giving? A ceremony? A celebration? Super Bowl? A sporting event? A concert?

Is she the only one dressed that way? Did she dressed up very fast? Does she have to change clothing very quickly? Very often?

She puts on underwear that is clean and decent, but certainly not remotely sexy --> is it relevant? So that underwear would not have appeared externally? So that she would have fit in the dress? For other not obvious reasons (example of obvious reason: being comfortable/not having other clean underwear to wear)? E.g. she had to stay in a relevant position for a long time? She had her period (not sure if this is the correct translation for menses...)? In order to be lifted up (e.g. a choreography she had to perform)?
Did she want to appear sexy?

Can the dress she puts be defined: modern? A dress that can be seen regularly on TVs? Regularly wore by people? E.g. that one could be easily seen walking on the streets? Or maybe a unique one? Designed for her? Ancient? Historical?

Martha is dressing for a very important occasion. --> is Martha's job relevant? Is the event related to: fashion? a speech she is giving? A ceremony? This - no to everything else. A celebration? Super Bowl? A sporting event? A concert?

Is she the only one dressed that way? No. Did she dressed up very fast? No. Does she have to change clothing very quickly? Very often? No changes required.

She puts on underwear that is clean and decent, but certainly not remotely sexy --> is it relevant? So that underwear would not have appeared externally? She certainly did not want her underwear to appear externally. So that she would have fit in the dress? n.r. For other not obvious reasons (example of obvious reason: being comfortable/Being comfortable probably her main reason. not having other clean underwear to wear)? n.r. E.g. she had to stay in a relevant position for a long time? This is true, and has some relevance. She had her period (not sure if this is the correct translation for menses...)? In order to be lifted up (e.g. a choreography she had to perform)? No/n.r. to both.
Did she want to appear sexy? I would say she wanted to appear more elegant than 'sexy.'

Can the dress she puts be defined: modern? Contemporary. A dress that can be seen regularly on TVs? Regularly wore by people? No to both. E.g. that one could be easily seen walking on the streets?NO. Or maybe a unique one? Designed for her? Possibly designed for the occasion, but possibly not. Ancient? Historical? n.r.

Would the ceremony last hours?
Would it involve long time standing? sitting? walking? dancing? running?
Would it be in a hot place? cold place? outdoors? indoors?
Would Martha have an active part in this ceremony? or merely be around there?

thisish indoors = a large open hall? a courtyard? a stadium? a church?
Does she basically put on warm underwear because the place is chilly?

Is this for a coronation? Yes! It could have been for the coronation of George VI in 1937, which was held in late Spring - which can be still rather chilly in the UK, especially in a large, cavernous building like Westminster Abbey. Another state function? For a wedding? A funeral? Graduation ceremony?

**************SPOILER*********************
Martha is a peeress, who dressed in her best for the occasion, but took the precaution of wearing what Americans call 'longjohns' or 'longhandles', or what Uncle Peter Daniels would call his 'winter flannels' underneath.
Since these ceremonies can be intermnible, many also wore adult diapers underneath their outfits, while preserving a dignified appearance to the public.
What do they call 'winter woolies' in Canada, Trebor?

Don’t know how I missed this answer and your question until now.

Long underwear is the most common name here, but also long Johns (although I think that’s a generational thing).
