Postby peter365 » Fri Oct 03, 2014 1:07 pm

Hi there puzzle pals . This is a true story, it happened to a friend of mine

Our conversation went something like this.

Me: 'I thought you weren't getting an iPhone 6'
Friend : 'I wasnt' but then I got this really bad stomach bug......'

What do you think happened?

Did the friend in fact purchase an iPhone 6?
Is standing in line relevant? Preordering?

Did your friend buy the iPhone because it would in some way help with his stomach bug?
Did your friend buy the iPhone as opposed to a competitor company's?

Was the purchase an impulse? Did he drive past an Apple store on the way to pick up medication/see the doctor and think "why not"?

Did your friend buy the iPhone as opposed to a competitor company's? An iPhone is his phone of choice I guess

So you thought he wasn't getting an iPhone 6 because he had just recently purchased the iPhone 5/5s or did not have any need to upgrade?

But he did because:
-his phone broke / was destroyed?
-his phone was stolen?
-he gave his phone away?

I'm going to assume for these next few questions that the phone was stolen, which I think you hinted at. Ignore them if that is not that case.
-Was it stolen in a public place?
-Was it stolen in a bathroom?
-Was it stolen in a health-service facility?

Please add to my question of Oct 7 the following:
Did he have another mobile phone before? while he had the stomach bug?
Did he lose it?
Did it break?
Did it not have the function he needed?
Did he use the new iPhone for something other than making phone calls, sending SMS or browsing the internet?
(would not even dare to think he used it for opening a bottle of Smithwicks ..)

I'm going to assume for these next few questions that the phone was stolen, which I think you hinted at. Ignore them if that is not that case. Sorry I did mislead earlier , I meant he lost the use of it but I should have just said no when asked if he'd lost the phone

Please add to my question of Oct 7 the following:
Did he have another mobile phone before? Yes he had a fairly new iPhone 5 while he had the stomach bug? Yes
Did he lose it?
Did it break? Yes
Did it not have the function he needed? No
Did he use the new iPhone for something other than making phone calls, sending SMS or browsing the internet? No
(would not even dare to think he used it for opening a bottle of Smithwicks ..)

Just to clarify , the only reason he replaced his phone was that he broke his old one.

Did the phone suffer:
-shattered screen?
-liquid damage?
-broken camera?
-malfunctioning hardware?

Did the phone break because of impact with the ground?
With some other surface?
Did your friend sustain any injuries?

Did whatever series of events that led to your friend breaking his phone happen because he had a stomach bug?
Which caused him to take steps X and Y --> broken phone?
Or would it have been just as likely if he were in perfect health?

Hi Peter

Did he have a long way to get to the toilet? e.g. up a couple of flights of stairs? Did he drop the phone down a long stairwell?
Was he moving when the phone got smashed or was he standing or sitting quite still?

So did he actually drop it? This is quite difficult to answer , technically yes but that might mislead . Lets say he had it in his possession and then didn't and in losing possession of it he broke it. Or place it on the floor of the cubicle and tread on it? No to this

Was he in the Gents at the time of breaking it? In the cubicle itself? Did he place it somewhere and it fell into something that smashed it up? Did he pass through a kitchen, place it briefly near a sink (perhaps to wash his hands) and it fell into a waste disposal that chewed it up?

Maybe I'm being a bit convoluted about this . He did drop it in so far as it left his hand and landed on the floor but it's more than a simple case of butterfingers and quite a bit more destructive . he tells me the phone was smashed to pieces.

Can we have a recap?
From what I gather so far, he got angry and threw the phone out of the stall (over the top or under the door, or does it matter? ). He was not talking to someone at the time. is the reason he got mad relevant?
Did the reason have nothing to do with the phone itself - he just felt like throwing something?

RECAP

Our hero has recently bought a new iPhone 6 despite having said that he wasn't going to because he had a relatively new iPhone 5. However this all changed when he smashed his old phone due to a bad case of stomach flu. While using the toilet at work he threw his phone from his stall causing it bounce off a wall and smash on the hard tiled floor. He did not do this out of anger.

A little clue: he did not mean to throw his phone and it's very relevant that he was using a toilet at work because this would not have happened had he been at home.

Was he trying to use the phone when he threw it? Depends on your definition of use . He certainly wasn't trying to use it as one would normally use a phone As a flashlight? No but you are sharing a ballpark with the correct answer

So he was in the bathroom for a long time? Yes

Is he surprised/scared/startled at any point? Yes
Did the phone slip out of his hands? Yes
Was he waving/flailing his arms? And yes again

Excellent spoyler inducing progress there Tiger.

Was he locked in the bathroom? In the stall?
Was he banging on the door or walls to get someone's attention?

Ooh, another idea.
Were the lights in the bathroom motion-activated? Was he in there long enough that the lights went out? And he was flailing his arms to try and get the lights back on? And accidentally flung the phone?

Balin I bet that's it!
Funny thing is, that exact situation happened to me at my school a couple of months ago.
Being in a pitch-black bathroom is not fun!!

Being in a pitch-black bathroom is not fun!! I'd imagine it's not.

Time for the *******SPOILER*******

It's exactly as Balin said, my friend had a really bad case of the runs and was unable to leave the toilet until his stomach bug emm shall we say got bored!

With everyone else in the office gone home and after spending a considerable time sitting on the loo the motion sensor lights in the bathroom went out plunging it into total pitch darkness. Without being graphic we'll simply say that my friend's delicate condition did not favour his standing up so he started to frantically wave his arms in the hope that this would trigger the sensor. Unfortunately his fairly new iPhone 5 was in his by now very sweaty hand and he accidently threw it out of the stall smashing it against the wall and the tiled floor of the bathroom.

Oh and the lights didn't come on either so he had to sit there in total darkness until it was safe for him to stand up.

This must have been a horrible experience and I briefly considered not laughing in his face when he told me before proceding to do just that.

Well done Balin and all who played. Hope you enjoyed it .

I think he was expecting sympathy when he told me the story but I couldn't hold in the laughter.

Ah, got a bit befuddled by what you said. I thought he'd said 'laugh all you want, but.....' when in fact he said 'Don't laugh, but....'
