[dmitri] Altitude Sickness

Postby iamdimitriputney » Thu Dec 11, 2014 4:07 pm

George is working on the top of a mountain when he starts to show signs of altitude sickness (headache, dizziness, not acting himself). His boss becomes worried and tells him to return to their base as soon as possible. George descends down the mountain, but the symptoms only get worse. After a few minutes, George's boss knows with 100% certainty that George will be dead within the hour.

Edit: changed wording slightly, will not impact the final outcome of the puzzle.

Is George's boss certain because
-George visibly looks sick?
-He's seen a case like this before?
-George has something more serious than altitude sickness?

Is George working on a literal mountain on Earth?
Relevant what George's job actually is?

Do George and his boss descend the mountain together? Or does the boss remain on the top?
Was the boss aware that his suggestion of getting back to the base would cause for George's sickness to get worse? Was that his aim?
Would George get sick anyway, had he not climbed the mountain in the first place?
If George had remained on top of the mountain, would he still be dying?

Does George actually die, eventually?
Any other persons relevant?

Is it relevant that George experiences a rapid decrease in pressure?
Does George die to something else?

Does George die from something else? (i.e. an animal bite that he did not notice but his boss saw)
Was George killed accidentally?

Does George actually die of altitude sickness?
Is George descending the mountain on foot? In a vehicle? On skis?
Is it relevant how George got to the top of the mountain in the first place?
Is the mountain located on land? Underwater? On Earth? Is George on an island?

Did George work on top of an underwater mountain?
Was the base underwater, too?
Did he start from the base and then ascended to the mountain?
Did he go up too fast? so, he was suffering decompression symptoms?
Did his situation become worse immediately when he turned back to the base?
Was the base at deeper water level? higher? the same?
Would it have been better if he stayed where he was, rather than returned to the base?

Did he ascend to the mountain?
So he was at deeper water level before?
Was his boss with him when he was on the mountain top? Before? after?
Was the boss at the base?
When the boss told him to return to the base, he did not? but, rather, descended to a deeper point?
Did he not hear? not understand? what his boss told him? Did the boss use an ambiguous wording? (like "go back" instead of "return to the base")
Did George eventually go up to the base? or did he die in the water?

When the boss told him to return to the base, he did not? but, rather, descended to a deeper point? Yes!
Did he not hear? not understand? what his boss told him? Did the boss use an ambiguous wording? (like "go back" instead of "return to the base") Close enough, explanation below
Did George eventually go up to the base? or did he die in the water? Died in the water.

You've got enough, time for a

**********SPOILER**********
If you've ever been certified as a Scuba diver, this should make more sense to you than most. George is a marine biologist SCUBA diving on top of an underwater mountain when he begins to display signs of nitrogen narcosis. Nitrogen narcosis occurs when there is too much nitrogen in the blood and is fairly common when doing deeper dives. Its symptoms are similar to being drunk (impaired judgement, moving slowly, nausea, dizziness). However, when George's boss radios in to tell him to get back to their base (on the surface), George's impaired judgement leads him to descend instead of ascend. The deeper he goes, the more air he uses. After several minutes, George's boss knows that there is no way that George will have enough air to ascend safely.

Happy Holidays!
